| 10 Meaningful Oscar Wilde Quotes … Posted: 06 Dec 2010 11:43 AM PST Oscar Wilde is my favorite writer of all time. I love a lot of writers, but can safely say he is my favorite. He wrote novels to die for, he is responsible for Dorian Gray, he was a poet and playwright and even wrote books for children. He is also one of the sharpest satirists ever, and as such is responsible for a number of quotes, all of them witty, most of them profound, and not a few of them extremely meaningful. I thought I'd share my favorites! 1. "The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it."Photo Credit: DecemberSun This isn't the first time you'll see something about temptation here, because Oscar has such a way of saying what just about everyone thinks at one time or another, over something. This is from “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” which is a virtual treasure chest of witticisms. 2. "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes."This sounds incredibly snarky on the surface, but then you step back and consider it for a second. I do, at least, and it really is true. Most of my experience has come from making mistakes – I'm still learning that way, every day! This is from the spectacular play, “Lady Windmere's Fan.” 3. "I can resist anything except temptation."Also from Lady Windmere's Fan, it speaks a rather profound truth as well. It's so easy to resist anything else, even if it's only a little thing. Wilde always makes me feel guilty, for instance, for eating something I know I shouldn't when I'm trying to keep my diet moderated. |

It is quite understandable why the reusing and recycling of paper is greatly encouraged. Try out these eight suggestions for reusing paper products. 1. Paper crafts
There are many craft projects that make use of paper. Try making colorful paper beads, paper chains, and papier-m |
| 8 Christmas Celebrations Around the World … Posted: 06 Dec 2010 10:17 AM PST Christmas is truly the most wonderful time of the year! But for the millions of people that live in this world, there are many different ways of celebrating it. For most people, either their culture or their religious beliefs decide what Christmas traditions they will observe. Read on to find out some of them! 1. A Belgium Christmas
Looks like it’s double the pleasure for the people of Belgium! On December 6th, “Sinterklauss” is celebrated which is basically a day celebrating Santa Claus. It is much like Christmas, where meals are shared and gifts are exchanged, but they also celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas day! How cool is that? 2. Finland Christmas
In Finland, Christmas is celebrated a lot like it is in the United States. Christmas is a family event, where close friends and family gather to share in the joys of love and togetherness. Most of their celebrating, however, is done on Christmas Eve. Visiting the cemeteries appears to be a common thing as well, and I read where the cemeteries are decorated beautifully this time of year! As you may or may not know, saunas are very much a thing in Finland. Still to this day, a trip to the sauna is tradition to get ready for church and visiting the graves of family members. 3. Hungry for a Hungarian Christmas?
Hungary has one of the neatest Christmas traditions. It’s a twist of the Belgium Christmas traditions. On the 6th of December, children clean their shoes and set them outside the door. Then Santa Claus or Father Christmas leaves a bag of candy and treats in their shoes. If they have been bad, he also leaves a golden birch, which is a symbol for a spanking, though they don’t actually get spanked for it. It just reminds them to be better. Then, on Christmas Eve, the children go to relatives, or to the movies, while Jesus visits their houses. He brings the tree and presents, and decorates their tree with lots of good things to eat, like gold foil wrapped chocolates, and meringues. After a wonderful meal, the children get to see the tree for the first time, and dive into their goodies! |
| Posted: 06 Dec 2010 09:09 AM PST I've been a fan of Apple since seventh grade, when the only three computers we had in our school were old Macs. They were so cool, even way back then, and now, they're the ultimate in coolness. It's positively square to use a PC (which, by the way, I use), and as we all know, Apple also made MP3 players cool… what can't they do? This holiday season, there's probably at least one Apple product in everyone's wish list — including mine. Here are 7 awesome gifts from Apple. 1. Apple iPad
 2. Apple MacBook
 3. Apple iPod Touch

| 8 Clever Clothing Tricks to Keep Warm … Posted: 06 Dec 2010 05:43 AM PST Alas, as is inevitable winter is on its way again (unless you live in the southern hemisphere, in which case bookmark this and come back in six months). With heating bills getting ever more expensive – plus you have to leave the house at some point! – it makes sense to keep warm using clothes (that's not quite as obvious as it sounds). Here are some useful clothing tips that will help you stay warm as the temperatures start to fall. 1. Men's socks
If like me, you don't have particularly small feet, then men's socks are a godsend. It's a lot easier to find long socks in men's ranges, and they really do help keep your legs warm. They also tend to come in plain colours, if you don't like the sometimes gaudy female variety. 2. LayersPhoto Credit: rebeca :) This is an often-quoted tip for keeping warm, and it really does work. Wearing a vest top, t-shirt and jumper, for example, helps trap heat. Throwing a gilet over a jumper is another good tip (mine is fake fur and suede, and I love it!). 3. Scarf
While I'm not advocating wearing hat, coat and scarf indoors, a light scarf is good for preventing your neck and throat from getting cold. As well as keeping you warm, scarves come in infinite variety and look so stylish (something that can be hard to achieve when you're wrapped up in layers). |
| 7 Reasons I Still Love Betty White … Posted: 06 Dec 2010 04:59 AM PST I’ve loved Betty White since I started watching Mary Tyler Moore reruns on Nick at Nite back in the day. Actually, it started before that, thanks to my great-grandmother watching every episode of the Golden Girls ever shown. I love that she’s had a resurgence of popularity, that she’s appearing in commercials and movies and TV shows, but that’s not even the half of it. Here are some of the reasons I still think she rocks. 1. Her Humor
Whether she’s playing a none too subtle sex kitten, a daffy Swede, or a representation of a guy who’s just hungry and trying to play football, Betty’s sense of humor is spot on. She knows how to poke fun at herself, she knows what’s funny, she knows how to make people laugh, and at 88, it doesn’t look like she’s going to stop with that talent any time soon. 2. Her Class
All the same, this is a classy woman. She still shines during red carpet events, she doesn’t try to act any younger than she is. She’s not a plastic surgery nightmare, she has no desire to make people think she’s still in her 50s or 60s. She owns who she is, and that is awesome. 3. Her Grace
In line with her classiness, there is just such a sweet grace about Betty White. She has such a joie de vivre, she’s such a happy woman. She’s still doing what she loves, she’s loving doing it, and she is the epitome of grace in every action. |
| Posted: 06 Dec 2010 02:53 AM PST When it comes to freshening up your house décor, the only wrong time to do so is the day before the doomsday. However, since I don't believe doomsday will be happening any time soon, I've taken the liberty to suggest some cute, unusual decorative items I, personally, find interesting. So, tell me what you think about these following ten: 1. Test the Waters Vase
 2. Mushroom candle set
 3. Flowery bookends

| 7 Tips for Choosing Sunglasses … Posted: 06 Dec 2010 02:35 AM PST When choosing sunglasses we must know that their main purpose is to give us protection against ultraviolet waves coming from the sun. It doesn't mean that if you pick a good label it will also bring safety to your eyes. So we have to take glasses with the proper factor. These rays affect us and can come from the reflections from water, windows etc… 7. Don't buy those with wide arms
This affects our seeing with both eyes, however there are some models with the arms made of lens. 6. Watch the frame size and material
It should fit our face and head. If they don't they will not give good sun protection. Normally they are light and they have different styles. 5. Keep them in a good depositing place
If the lens are kept for a long period of time in the sunlight they may lose their initial color and change their form. The genuine glasses have a package included containing a cleaning tissue and a case for storage. |
| Posted: 06 Dec 2010 12:52 AM PST I've been to quite a few different countries in my life time and spend more than a week in each one. There are still so many more that I'd love to visit, even if it was only for a day. The list below consists of 7 cool countries to visit. Some of them are ones I've actually been to and the others are ones I'd like to visit in the future. See if there are any that you have thought about visiting as well! 7. Spain
I'd like to see the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona and the amazing architecture of Antoni Gaudi. The latest work of Gaudi is La Sagrada Familia. It reminds me of the dribble castles I used to make with my son when we'd be at the beach. Also, what better place to see Flamenco dancing than in Spain where it began, as well as enjoy Spain's national dish; paella. 6. Japan
The only reason I haven't gone to Japan yet is the flight. I detest flying and can't imagine being on a plane for the amount of time necessary to make it to this island in the Pacific. Despite the long flight, I just might have to suck it up and visit Japan some day. I want to see the Imperial Palace, Mt. Fuji, Hakone National Park, a sumo wrestling match, and the Kodo Drum Festival. My best friend was stationed in Japan for 3 years when she served in the Air Force and she absolutely loved it and the people who live there. 5. Scotland
My mom and I did some extensive traveling all over Scotland one summer. We visited museums, castles, art galleries, saw the train that is featured in the Harry Potter movies, toured whisky distilleries, visited the town where golf began, and strolled through gorgeous botanical gardens. There are tons of beaches to explore and many little towns with great historical sites to visit. I know there are a number of things that we could have done while visiting Scotland, but we just didn't have the time to cram everything in. |
| Posted: 06 Dec 2010 12:51 AM PST From the time I was a small child the words, "That stuff will rot your teeth" have rung in my ears every time a see a can of soda. This was a common phrase that my grandparents uttered when they saw my dad drinking a can of his favorite cola. I have to admit, it never prevented me from having the occasional glass of pop, but I have learned the many hazards behind this carbonated beverage over the years. Here are 7 reasons to avoid soda. 7. Promotes cavities
Brushing your teeth will help you battle plaque that builds up on your teeth, while drinking soda will only feed this plaque. The sugar in soda is what plaque feeds on. Sugar feeds the bacteria in your mouth, which then produce acid that aid the plaque in the corrosion of the protective enamel on your teeth. The less sugar you can provide for this sticky substance, the less chance plaque will have to harm your teeth. 6. Too much sodium
There is already quite a bit of sodium taken in with daily meals, which is often more than plenty. The recommended amount of sodium that is supposed to be consumed daily is between 500 and 1000 mg. On average, Americans tend to take in a lot more than this daily recommendation; sometimes up to 10 times more. A cup of soda has an average of 30 to 50 mg of sodium per 8 ounce serving. Too much sodium can lead to higher blood pressure, an increased risk of having a stroke or heart disease, and also kidney disease. 5. Makes you gain weight
The human body can only use so much sugar for creating energy; the rest of the sugar gets turned into fat and stored for later use. Many people have thought fat to be the culprit of gaining excessive weight, but a lot of studies have proved sugar to be an even bigger cause of weight gain. Drinking a lot of soda can also prevent you from feeling hungry for "real" food, thus giving your body less vitamins, minerals, and any substantial food for your body to use. |
| 5 Ways to Put Someone Under your Spell… Posted: 06 Dec 2010 12:38 AM PST 1. FlowersYes, flowers. Even if you’re just giving them to friends, they will be forever grateful of your great gift. Of course, the sweetness factor increases if you grow the flowers yourself. 2. Little Red DressImagine wearing one for an early Christmas date. I bet your date will be saying things such as “Your wish is my command” or “Shall I conquer this little nation for you?” pretty soon. 3. HumorThe type that shows that you’re not scared to make fun of yourself is always the best. If there are guys reading this, taking tips from Conan O’Brien will make girls love you even more. 4. ChocolateYep, chocolate can pretty much make someone love you. I mean, some girls can be picky but gimme chocolates and I’ll be your slave forever. 5. A Real SpellOf course, you can also go the magical route and literally put someone under a spell. To know more about them, check out the link. What do you think of these methods, ladies? Are you with me on the chocolate bit? Top Photo Credit: Brandon Christopher Warren |
| Posted: 05 Dec 2010 11:51 PM PST Animals fascinate me. They always have and probably always will. I find the poisonous ones to be exceptionally intriguing. Some have bright colors to warn other animals that they need to stay away, while a few poisonous animals blend in quite nicely with their surroundings. The 7 most poisonous animals I could find are listed below. Thankfully none of them are in my neck of the woods, so I don't have to worry about accidentally surprising one and getting stung or bitten. 7. Golden Poison Frog
This little guy is also known as the Golden Dart Frog. It is bright yellow in color and endemic to Colombia. It is considered to be at the top of the list for poisonous vertebrates in the entire world. The skin of this small frog is saturated with alkaloid poison. This type of poison affects the nerves and can cause heart failure. Dogs and chickens have supposedly died from the poison one of these frogs left on a paper towel as it walked across it. That's how deadly this frog actually is. 6. Brazilian Wandering Spider
Found in Central and South America, these large spiders made the Guinness World Records book as being the most venomous spider in the world. Growing to be as large as 5 inches across, this spider isn't one that I would want to suddenly land on me as I was walking through the forest! The venom from this spider is a neurotoxin that has to be delivered via its large fangs. 5. Textile Cone Snail
I've always thought of snails as being the most harmless creatures on the planet. Apparently I was wrong! The Textile Cone Snail has powerful venom that has been fatal to some humans. Most cone snails are poisonous and a few hunt fish by using their poison and harpoon-like teeth. This particular type of marine snail was used as a murder weapon in an episode of Hawaii Five-O. Some cone snails are capable of firing a harpoon into human skin through a wetsuit or gloves, so it's best not to handle these beautiful snails at all. |
