| 10 Easy Ways to Compliment Someone … Posted: 07 Dec 2010 11:47 AM PST I’ve decided I need to improve my karma. I’m on a self improvement jag of sorts, and was thinking of different things you can do to improve yourself. I remembered a time two summers ago, when I complimented a lady on her pants as she was leaving the grocery store. She grinned widely and I felt pretty good too, which lead me to ten ways you can easily give someone a compliment. 1. Brighten Their DayPhoto Credit: Lisa Harrison Photography I think everyone has some form of intuition, and experience has told me that girls are especially good at listening to it. Reaching out and finding a compliment for someone who looks like they’re having an awful day can make a huge difference. You know what it’s like to be having an awful day, think how much a compliment can mean. 2. Make Sure You Mean ItDon’t offer an insincere compliment, that’s really the worst. I believe if you really look hard enough, you can find something positive in just about everyone. Yes, I was Heidi in a past life, but I don’t like to let it get around – it ruins my rep. Honestly though, if you look hard you can find something, even if it’s just a piece of jewelry. And odds are that it will mean a lot to the recipient. 3. Seek Out a Physical FeatureTelling someone they have beautiful eyes, a lovely smile, or great hair doesn’t take a lot of effort. The comment doesn’t have to be flirtatious, just sincere. To compliment someone on something you find comely produces a special variety of warm fuzzy feelings. |
| Posted: 07 Dec 2010 11:40 AM PST For this blog, I have decided to do 8 facts about famous people. Some of these facts, you may find a bit on the funny side, while others may be on the serious side. I guess it all depends on the type of person you are. The facts I write about are well researched and most of them, I find in the books I have. Yes, I own many books on facts, since it is amongst some of those things I like to read about. 8. Darth Vader
David Prouse was the man in the Darth Vader suit in Star Wars. In the first movie, he spoke all of his lines. It was not until he saw the finished movie that he realized his voice was being dubbed over with that of James Earl Jones. My husband is a pretty big fan of Star Wars, so I just had to tell you about that. 7. Canada's Centennial Baby
Pamela Anderson is Canada's Centennial Baby. This is because she was the first baby to be born on the centennial anniversary of Canada's independence. I know, this is a silly fact that you probably do not care about, but surely, there are some good Pamela Anderson fans out there. Speaking of which, have you read "Star" by Pamela? 6. Charles Dickens
According to Charles Dickens, if you want to improve your writing, then you need to sleep facing north. He actually slept facing North because he thought it improved his writing. |
| Posted: 07 Dec 2010 11:35 AM PST Pre-teens are in an awkward place, too old to be little, too little to be old. This makes their lives a little confusing, and it also makes buying them gifts a little difficult. You need to find something that won't insult them by being too babyish, but not so old that they won't like it. That's a hard balance to strike! But I can help. Having raised a pre-teen, I've put together this helpful list of 7 great gifts for pre-teens! 1. Astronaut Ice Cream
Perfect for: the scientist 2. Balloon Dog Ornament
Perfect for: the prankster Pre-teens may be outgrowing their fear and hatred of clowns, but they've still got a lot of love for balloon animals. These ones are made of glass, though, and measure a miniature 4 inches long. They come in four colors and "breeds," so you're sure to find one your pre-teen will like.
 3. Stylophone Portable Synthesizer
 Perfect for: the musician |

| 8 Tips for Home Energy Conservation … Posted: 07 Dec 2010 10:25 AM PST We are lucky to live in an age of virtually uninterrupted power supply. We wake up each day fully knowing that the lights will switch on and that our appliances will work. Power has become a permanent and an important part of our daily lives. However, did you know that our sources of power are dwindling? Yes, power shortages can and are happening. That is why we should do our part to conserve energy whenever we can. These eight tips can help get you started on home energy conservation. 1. Use Energy Star appliances
When you are buying or upgrading appliances make sure to look for the Energy Star logo. While Energy Star qualified appliances are initially expensive, you will be saving more money in the long run. These appliances are environmentally-friendly and are energy and cost efficient. 2. Insulate your home
A properly insulated home will consume less energy than one that is not. Insulate your home to keep the temperature throughout your home consistent. Your air conditioner and heater will have to work less because the walls, floors, and ceilings trap in the cool or warm air better. 3. Check for gaps and cracks
You should check for gaps around doors and windows. Also check other parts of your home for holes or cracks where cool or warm air could escape. Seal these holes and gaps to prevent air from escaping. |
| 7 Of My Favorite Designers From Fall Fashion In Paris … Posted: 07 Dec 2010 10:23 AM PST Fashion, fashion! It’s everywhere! And “current fashions” are changing every day! One of my favorite things about fashion week happens to be all the lovely designs based on the high- end designers. Looking back on Fall/Winter fashions in Paris, here are my top favorite designers! 1. Mario Lefrance and Beatrice Ferrant
I love the color palette that they chose for this line. The beautiful flowing of dresses in many of their creations was also something that caught my eye! Can’t wait to see their spring line! What will they have in store for us? 2. Hannah MacGibbon
She sure has a way with taking a boyish look and making it ultra feminine! The trench coat belongs in the race this season and I love these designs. Thank goodness it is finally cool enough where I live to pull out the overcoats! 3. Frank Sorbier
Though this particular creation is a little over-the-top for my taste, I do like the basic design of many of his outfits. Pictured is one of my favorites. Also, among my favorite was a fitted black dress with fringed jacket top! I really like the way designers have incorporated a feminine touch to all the designs this season, whether with bows, lace, ruffles, soft material. |
| Posted: 07 Dec 2010 10:02 AM PST I think children have the most fun at Christmas, trying so hard at the last minute to be good (lest they land on Santa's naughty list), furiously making adjustments to their wish lists, and getting cocoa mustaches while decorating the tree. Every year, we add new ornaments to our children's collections, so when they grow up and move out, they'll have all the trimmings they'll need to decorate their own special trees. This year, Urban Outfitters is offering an array of ornaments to suit all kinds of children, from the pretty princess to the mostly-grown little men. Here are 8 great ornaments for kids (naughty, nice, and in between)… 1. Balloon Dog Ornament
 2. Wiener Dog Tied Up Ornament
 3. Pickle Ornament

| Posted: 07 Dec 2010 09:38 AM PST Since I've cut my hair from waist-length locks into a chic bob, I can't seem to keep warm in the winter. My neck's always cold, so I've collected quite an assortment of scarves. But my poor ears! I've gotten tired of wearing earmuffs, so now I need to find some new hats… and I've found so many adorable ones at ModCloth, one of my favorite online shops. Here are 7 adorable winter hats… 1. Trail Mix Hat
 2. Amber Aura Hat
 3. Warm Thoughts Headscarf

| Posted: 07 Dec 2010 05:44 AM PST If you love winter, then lucky you. Stop reading. You don't need this post! Many of us hate winter with a passion though, and can't wait for the first signs of spring. Sadly, hibernation is not an option for humans, so we have to cope with the cold and dark evenings as best we can. Here are some tips on how to get through the season. 1. It Won't Last
Yes, it comes round every year, but winter won't last forever, even if it sometimes does seem endless. So console yourself with the knowledge that spring will be back again, even if not for a while yet. 2. Migrate
If you have the option, do what the birds do – fly south for the winter. This may not be practical, but it's certainly a nice thought! Where I live, winters are not as cold as in my home country, but since the summers are also warmer I do find that I still feel cold in winter and am tempted to head south … 3. Emigrate
Of course, you can always opt for a permanent move to sunnier places if you really can't bear winter weather. Some islands such as Malta and the Canaries have a fairly stable climate, so winters are not particularly cold. Or there's always the Caribbean. |
| 7 Tips to Stop Biting Your Nails … Posted: 07 Dec 2010 04:01 AM PST I used to be a serious nail biter. No matter what my parents tried, I bit my nails as a kid. This continued until just two years ago. There were points over the years where I quit, but never long enough to let my nails get as strong as they needed to be. Strengthening your nails is a big part of not biting them, as you will see. Here are some tips to help any of my fellow nail-biters out there! 1. Paint It Black
I have to say straight out that this does not work for everyone. While painting your nails helps a lot of people quit nibbling, some just don’t care. I would go on biting right over the polish, which didn’t leave the greatest taste in my mouth. However, a lot of people have luck with this method. 2. Paint It Gross
If using nail polish won’t work, painting your nails with some foul tasting substance can. There are lots of products like this and they really do taste awful. I know, because I bit my nails in spite of the junk I used, but if you have a lot of will power, this method is really helpful. 3. Olive or Vegetable Oil
I read that rubbing olive oil or vegetable oil over your hands will help strengthen your nails. At the same time, it tastes awful, so it acts as a deterrent to nibbling. I might have to give this a try just to make sure I stay on the strong path. Has anyone else tried this technique? |
| Posted: 07 Dec 2010 03:22 AM PST It may sound a bit unorthodox but I have a friend that uses USB memory stick to keep his passport scans whenever he goes abroad. The guy says, "Somebody may steal my passport but I doubt anybody will find my flash drive worth stealing." I, in the other hand, use the flash drive for other, less unusual stuff, like storing my fav tunes, work in progress, notes and lessons which may come handy on the exams or which I know my classmates will ask to borrow sooner or later. The point is this – no matter what you keep on your USB stick or how often do you use it, you can't ever deny its usefulness. And these days, they go beyond useful – they reflect personal style, have multiple purposes and could even make a cool gift. So, if you're browsing for a new USB flash drive, here's the list of 11 ones I like: 1. Building block flash drive
 2. Green 'n' yellow Meletta
 3. Bossy Bear flash drive

| 7 Tips on Being the Perfect Dad … Posted: 07 Dec 2010 02:37 AM PST So many fathers want to be perfect so that their child or children enjoy spending time with them and they want to raise their children so that they are happy in life. Here are 7 tips on being the perfect dad. 7. Enjoy yourself
Whilst it is important for you to be there for yourself it is also important for you to have your own life, to enjoy yourself and be happy. If you are happy then this is likely to be reflected in your behaviour and your child is likely to be happier too. It is okay to go out and enjoy yourself with friends or work colleagues, and to take a break away from the family. 6. Be fun but at the same time set the rules
You want to be fun so that your child enjoys spending time with you but at the same time you need to set some rules so that your child knows how to behave. For example, you do not want them constantly having temper tantrums or kicking and swearing at you. There needs to be some ground rules in place so that your child learns how to behave correctly. 5. Remain flexible in your life
Sometimes with work and other commitments it can be really difficult to maintain a balance but always try to remain flexible in your life. This is so that if your child needs you they will always know that you are there for you. In my opinion the chances are that they just like knowing the fact that daddy is there for them. |
| Posted: 07 Dec 2010 12:54 AM PST I don't always know what to get someone for Christmas, so most of the time I'll pass out cookies, candies, or a combination of both. I have yet to hand them to someone and see them frown at the array of treats before them. Here are just 7 yummy Christmas treats that I often give away during the holidays. Most of these I only make during the holidays, so the family really looks forward to this time of year for a chance to have their favorite goodies baked for them to eat. 7. Peanut Brittle
You'll need a candy thermometer for this treat and raw peanuts, not roasted. Raw peanuts are usually easy to find during Christmas time, since peanut brittle is a common treat to make for the holidays. I know my dad can't seem to get his fill of the stuff. This candy is easy to make and takes patience. You'll need to keep an eye on the sugar mixture so it doesn't burn and then there is the wait involved for the brittle to get hard enough to break into pieces. 6. Russian Tea Cookies
I've also seen these cookies formed into crescent shapes and referred to as Mexican Wedding Cookies. I'm not sure if there is much of a difference in ingredients. I actually think the sugar to nuts ratio is a bit different. The Mexican Wedding Cookies have more nuts and less sugar. These rich cookies consist of a cup of butter a cup of powdered sugar, and almost a full cup of nuts, so they are very sweet and nutty. I've noticed that these are usually some of the first cookies to disappear of the cookie tray at my grandmothers when the family arrives for the annual Christmas celebration. |
| 7 Facts on Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress … Posted: 07 Dec 2010 12:54 AM PST Lady Gaga caused quite a stir with her meat dress during the VMAs at the beginning of September. She stated that it had nothing to do with being disrespectful of vegans or vegetarians. There were many interpretations that came from Lady Gaga about her meat dress. In case you are curious about this outfit, here are 7 facts on Lady Gaga's meat dress for you to read about. 7. 50 pounds of meat were used
I can't imagine lugging around a 50 pound dress all night long. Lady Gaga's meat dress required 50 pounds of meat to make it, but it ended up weighing closer to 40 pounds since all the meat wasn't used. I'm sure the chunks of meat wrapped around her feet for shoes weighed quite a bit too. Maybe that is where the extra meat went, along with the chunk used for her brooch-laden purse. 6. Refrigeration was required
The dress had to be kept in a refrigerator while it was being sewn together. It took around two days to complete the dress, but a total of three days to gather all the necessary materials for making the dress in the first place. Supposedly the dress will turn into jerky as it dries out. That's much better than having it rot away. I wonder if the jerky version will be made into something else later on. 5. There was a sweet smell to it
Lady Gaga actually confirmed this fact. She said it smelled sweet, which I guess that's how meat tends to smell when it hasn't reached the spoiled stage. Some people find that meat smells bad and others think it smells good. Vegetarians tend to be turned off by the smell of meat, whether it's raw or cooked. I suppose Lady Gaga thought the meat had a sweet smell to it because she is a meat eater herself. |
| 10 Funny Fictional Characters to Follow on Twitter … Posted: 06 Dec 2010 11:38 PM PST Twitter, the micro-blogging platform, has bred a new type of celebrities: the fictional kind. If you want your Twitter timeline to have an element of imaginative and funny, following these characters is a must. The first five are ladies. For the second set, I found “men.” 1. @S_SylvesterGLEE
Yes, the formidable Cheerios coach from Glee. Let me tell you, her tweets are as scary as her one-liners or rants on the show. And look at that background. Who can even resist following her with that megaphone? Follow her for your daily chuckles. 2. @DorotaNYCFor those who don’t know who Dorota is (how could you possibly not know her???), she is Blair’s trusty sidekick. Yes, Blair as in the brunette from Gossip Girl. I no longer follow the show religiously because some episodes have gotten a bit blah. So what I do is check out Dorota’s Twitter to see if something exciting has happened. The above tweet is an example. Now I’m curious about what happened to Serena. 3. @RachelBerryGLEEOh her tweets are crazy, intense and VERY self-important. Yes, typical Rachel. She does not mention Finn that much, which I think is an oversight but her tweets are fun nonetheless. 4. @BarbieStyleOf course Barbie has Twitter! How else would she let ladies know about her short beauty and fashion tips. Seriously, she tweets about those. Methinks Barbie’s Twitter can replace some fashion and beauty blogs out there. 5. @BrittanyGLEEI’m still waiting for that book on Brittany one-liners (Glee producers, are you reading this?) so her Twitter will do for now. She is one of the funniest cheerleaders in the history of TV and her tweets are just as hysterical. Follow her! |
