| 25 Ways To Eat Light This Holiday Season … Posted: 03 Jan 2011 12:01 PM PST There’s no doubt about it- we all love to eat! And especially sweets! This time of year is even more tempting, with all the sugary treats, yummy breads and delicious cookies to nibble on, it’s no wonder we all walk away with a thicker waistline! But, it doesn’t HAVE to be that way. yes of course I’m serious! And no you don’t have to give it all up and eat celery until the new year. Here are 25 ways you can eat light this holiday season and still enjoy your food without wearing it! 1. Be A Smart CookieI know, I know, it’s so tempting to want a taste of every single treat on the goodie table. But you have to decide, do you want to eat it all and regret it later or eat a little and not? Focus on one or two sweets that you can’t get any other time of the year, and leave the rest for the others. Gingerbread men or christmas cookies are good examples. 2. Pie SolutionThat buttery pie crust contains at least two tablespoons of butter per slice. I know it tastes good, but here’s how to have your pie and eat it too. Eat only half of the crust to slash your calories in half. Ot if you want the whole crust, eat it, but leave the whipped cream off. If you opt to leave all of the crust on your plate, then add a tablespoon of whipped cream. You will still get your sweet tooth fulfilled, but for half of the calories! 3. The Slice Is RightDid you know that pumpkin, lemon meringue, and sweet potato pie all have less calories than a slice of apple, mince, or pecan? They sure do! And when you choose a piece of pie, keep an eye on the size. For a 9-inch pie, the thickest part should be no more than 3 and a half inches wide. It’s more than enough to satisfy you and fill you up without added calories and fat! |
| 8 Reasons I Don’t Make New Year’s Resolutions … Posted: 03 Jan 2011 11:01 AM PST Do people really make New Year Resolutions? Or perhaps more accurately, do they ever keep them? I know I don't! But that is not the only reason why I don't bother making them … 1. Why New Year?Who started this whole thing? They have a lot to answer for, that's for sure. Just because we're starting a new calendar seems a rather inadequate reason for making changes. It's just an arbitrary date. Why should you be able to make your life better just because of that? 2. I Don't Keep ThemI've not made any resolutions for at least 25 years – the reason being that I've never managed to keep one in my life. In fact, I can't even remember what they were, and they were probably pretty stupid anyway. 3. Same Old, Same Old …What do we resolve to do? The same thing every year. And why do we do that. Because we didn't keep them last year. Or the year before. Or the year before that. Maybe it's best to see them as goals, rather than a must-do list. |
| 10 Tips to Be Strong in Spirit … Posted: 03 Jan 2011 11:00 AM PST Strength, in whatever way it is manifested, is something that a lot of people want to possess. Some people work out to be physically powerful. Others study to be mentally and intellectually strong. There are also those individuals who seek to be strong in spirit. Personally, I think that the strongest person is one who is strong in spirit. Without that inner strength, all other forms of strength won't matter. Not everyone, including me, has developed a strong spirit. However, no matter how old you are or what your status in life is, it is never too late for you to become a person of strength. Check out these tips that will hopefully help you become strong in spirit. 1. Have faith in somethingWe all have our limits. There is nothing wrong with admitting that you cannot be strong all by yourself. For many people, their strength comes from having faith in something. You can have faith in your personal god, in the universe, in the goodness of people, in the natural course of things, or just in anything that gives you some form of strength. 2. Be with people who inspire youThe relationships you build and keep can affect your outlook in life. If you spend time with a lot of cynical and negative people, then chances are you will become like them. You need to be with people who are positive and strong in spirit. Hopefully, they will influence you to be a better and stronger person. 3. Learn from your experiencesYour experiences in life are lessons waiting to be learned. Mistakes cease to be simple errors in judgment if you take time to reflect and learn from them. Even positive experiences reinforce and add to the things that you already know. Open your senses and be willing to learn from the things that will make you a person with a strong spirit. |
| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 10:52 AM PST I've always had animals in the house; cats, dogs, ferrets, rabbits, parakeets, parrots, hamsters, mice, etc. It seems like the family dog has always been the one who went for walks with me and genuinely loved keeping me company. Here are 7 cool breeds of dogs that I've either owned or knew first hand. I'm sure you've heard of each of these breeds of dog. Hopefully your experience with dogs has been a pleasant one and you enjoy my list! 7. Rough CollieMy aunt and uncle had a Rough Collie named Rex when I was growing up, plus I loved all the Lassie movies. Many people refer to these dogs as 'Lassie' dogs, since the sable and white Rough Collies tend to bring to mind this famous canine. They were originally developed as a herding breed in Scotland. I don't know of any famers who use this breed for herding in the area I live in, but I know they are perfectly happy being outside in the cold. The Rough Collie has an extremely thick coat. I used to use Rex as a pillow while I watched cartoons. Soft and warm, all rolled into one loveable package! 6. Border CollieI've always been fascinated by the agility and talent these dogs have. They are amazing to watch during the dog shows where obstacle courses have to be completed within a certain amount of time. I've watched documentaries on these dogs and supposedly their herding abilities are derived from basic instinct. It must be nice to need a herding dog and not have to spend a lot of time training them on how to do their job. 5. WeimaranerRoyalty who engaged in hunting used to use these dogs. I remember seeing them featured on Sesame Street. I think they were forming letters or something to do with words. They are a beautiful dog, even for being rather monochromatic. Weimaraners started off being used to hunt deer, boar, and bear, but later were used for hunting foxes, rabbits, and various fowl. Today they are mostly kept as house pets. |
| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 10:40 AM PST I admit it: I'm hooked on crime dramas. I love the plots and the detective work, the science and the characters, and how they all come together to solve even the strangest crimes. I don't like reality-based crime shows, like "The First 48," because they're just depressing (why do we humans like to hurt each other so much?), but I love the made-up ones. Here are 7 crime dramas I love. 1. CSI
This is my all-time favorite crime drama for a variety of reasons. First, the cast is fantastic, completely believable, from Sarah to Nick to Catherine to Brass. I really miss Grissom, and of course I wish Warrick hadn't had to be killed off, but the addition of Laurence Fishburne as a new CSI was brilliant. And no, I don't like the New York or Miami versions — it's Vegas or nothing, baby. 2. Bones
I loved "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and the spin-off "Angel," not only because the writing was so wonderful, but also because I have such a massive crush on David Boreanz. Well, actually, I don't like him personally, because he's kind of a man-whore, but I adore his characters, including Booth. The sparks between him and brilliant, nerdy Bones are magnificent. I love this show! 3. Law & Order: SVU
I've been a fan of the entire Law & Order series since they launched about, what, a hundred years ago? But my favorite is the Special Victims Unit, again, mostly because of the characters and the actors. I love all of them, from Olivia and Elliot to Finn and Munch. The DA is fantastic, along with all of his staff… and the plots seem ripped from the headlines, they're so realistic. There are a few episodes that have made me cry like a baby. And they always seem to get the best actors to play the bad guys, too. Remember the episode with Andrew McCarthy? Best bad guy ever! |
| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 10:37 AM PST Sometimes there's nothing more soothing than a good bowl of soup. I find soup to be a great way to get warm after playing outside in the cold or an excellent way to ease a sore throat. There are recipes for all tastes, but here are 9 comforting soup recipes I like a lot. I'm sure you will find some to be very familiar, but hopefully there are a few new ones you might like to try. I like to have ingredients on hand for an assortment of soups, since I don't always crave the same type all the time. Different occasions call for different recipes! 9. Wonton SoupThis is an international soup that is absolutely yummy! Sauté a couple of minced cloves of garlic in some vegetable or olive oil until they are soft. Add a quart of chicken broth or a quart of water and some chicken bullion cubes. Vegetable bullion cubes can be substituted as well. Bring all of this to a boil and then drop in a package of frozen Chinese dumplings or wontons. A quart of broth will sufficiently hold 12 of either dumplings or wontons. Simmer soup for 10 minutes more and then add a cup of snow peas, a quarter cup of sliced green onions, a tablespoon of soy sauce and a cup of fresh spinach. A teaspoon of freshly grated ginger can also be added, but it gives the soup a bit of a bite. Simmer a few more minutes and then serve. 8. Chicken Enchilada SoupBasically, this is creamy chicken soup with slices of tortillas dropped into it. The main difference in taste is created by the Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, and cumin. After the chicken broth is added to the can of cream of chicken soup and brought to a simmer, toss in a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and a teaspoon of the cumin and chili powder. Tortilla strips and some shredded cheddar cheese are added to the soup right before it is served. |

| 8 Ways Your Cat Shows It Loves You … Posted: 03 Jan 2011 09:44 AM PST Whatever people think, it simply isn't true that cats don't love people. They're simply very choosy about who they give their affection to – and it can be very genuine. My cats are very much mine, and they show it in many ways. Here are some examples of how a cat might show it loves you. 1. GreetingI love coming home and seeing my cats run to greet me (and it's not 'cupboard love', because they have food constantly available. They rub round my legs, roll over to have their tummies tickled, and purr away. It's a pleasure to come home to. 2. GiftsYou know when your cat brings you mice, frogs, birds (or in my case, lizards and cockroaches), and you freak and start shrieking at him to get it out of your house? Your poor moggy is actually bewildered at your reaction. In his view, you are a hopeless hunter and so he is actually doing you a favour by making sure you don't starve. That's love, feline style. 3. ConsolationCats seem to know when you are feeling lonely, upset or sad. Many times mine have chosen the perfect moment to come and quietly sit by me, cuddling into me. One cat (now sadly gone), who hated being picked up, once allowed me to pick her up and cuddle her when I really needed comfort. I truly believe she didn't jump down because she knew how important it was. |
| 8 Tips on Choosing the Best Hairstyle … Posted: 03 Jan 2011 09:25 AM PST Picking the right hairstyle is hard. Just because you think something is cute doesn’t mean it will necessarily be the best choice for you. The good news is there are some tips you can follow and some things you can do that will help you pick a lovely, flattering look. All you have to do is consider these 8 tips on choosing the best hairstyle! 1. Have an Idea
First of all, you have to start with an idea of what you want. Maybe you want to go short, maybe you want your hair all one length. You might want a layered look or something choppy. Without an idea, picking a hairstyle can quickly get overwhelming. 2. Know Your Face Shape
It is also imperative that you know what kind of facial shape you have. Is it round or is it more oval? Is it heart shaped? Maybe you have a more square shaped face. The shape of your face will go a long way toward determining what hairstyles will work best for you. 3. Know Your Hair
You also have to know your hairs foibles and quirks. For instance, I have very thick hair, which doesn’t lend itself well to wispy styles. I also have an awful cowlick, right at my hairline on the back of my neck. It can really frig up some of the hairstyles I like. You have to know those things, so you will know beforehand what might not work for you. |
| 8 Things You Can Get For Free … Posted: 03 Jan 2011 09:03 AM PST Believe it or not, some things really do come for free and I'm not talking about love, respect or any of those things right now. I'm talking about material stuff like free cosmetic products, foods and even books, movies and tech stuff. Some people collect these things for hobby while others see free stuff as a chance to save some money without giving up the satisfaction of trying out new products. So here are some things you can get for free… 1. Makeup
How many times have you been interrupted in your make-up shopping with that famous, "Sorry to bother you – would you take this survey" line? Whenever I see the promotions crew I do my "busy customer" look hoping they won't try to talk me into losing half an hour of my time filling out paperwork. WRONG MOVE! Do the survey! The longer it is, the better the chances are that there will be free make-up after it. Oh, yeah, and definitely tip the "I would like to receive offers, coupons and samples" box in the bottom. We all know the sample secret, right? No? Well, samples are sometimes better than the real deal because the company wants you to have a great first-time experience and immediately buy the product. Don't believe me? Why do you think people are going so crazy about the sample sales of perfumes? 2. Skincare products
Estee Lauder online store gives you the opportunity to choose two free samples with every purchase. So, if you like their products do check the site to see what's being offered these days. And guess what, this brand is not the only one that gives mini, promo packages for free. I, personally, find promo packages quite useful for at least two reasons: First: you get a 10-day supply to determine if the product works for you, which is far better than blowing big bucks on something that may be completely wrong for your skin. Second, if you are already familiar with the product you can use the samples when traveling – they save plenty of space, the dosage is small so it doesn't violate the airport's safety regulations and you can take them with you as hand luggage, so no temperature changes and other stuff that could damage the products. |
| 9 Tips for Traveling During the Holidays … Posted: 03 Jan 2011 08:52 AM PST It’s important to be with your loved ones during the holidays. Many people also take advantage of the break to take vacations. However, traveling during the holiday season can be like hell on earth – but these 9 tips for holiday travel can definitely make it better! 1. Book It ASAP
Naturally, the earliest you can book your travel plans, the better. You can lock in excellent rates, for one thing, plus you make sure you get the flights and hotel rooms you need. If you wait until the last minute, you’re way more likely to discover that you’re SOL and will have to recreate scenes from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles without John Candy to lighten the mood. 2. Consider Alternatives
If you aren’t going far, have a lot of time off, or just really want to save money, there are a couple of inexpensive alternatives to flying. You can always drive, but traffic can be a killer if you go that route. If that’s not worth it to you, think about taking the train. Speaking from experience, riding the train is fast, there are hardly any layovers, and almost nothing stops an Amtrak train once it’s on its way. 3. Pick Different Dates
Try not to travel during the most peak dates. With Christmas, three days earlier is better than two. If you are going home after New Year’s, try to stretch it out. Go home on January 3 or 4 instead of the day after. |
| 8 Mistakes Women Make When Having Sex … Posted: 03 Jan 2011 05:44 AM PST I have decided that it's time to give 8 mistakes women make while having sex. Now, I'm not pointing any fingers at any particular person (how could I?), so this blog should not offend you. Nor am I saying all women do this. Just continue reading below and see if you're guilty of any of these (you don't have to tell). 8. Worrying that We Look FatImage source: mercurysummers.tumblr.com Some women constantly worry that they look fat, even during sex. Trust me, during this time, if your thighs are jiggling, your may won't notice and if he does, he might think it's sexy. 7. We Worry About How We Move
Women worry about how they are moving during sex. They worry about if they are pleasing their guy or not. If you are having a great time and you allow yourself to get wrapped up in what is going on, then I am sure he will enjoy every bit of it. 6. Assuming He Can Get a Hard On Instantly
Sometimes, women worry if the guy does not get a hard on instantly. Men do not have some secret switch to that thing and just because it doesn't get hard instantly does not mean it is your fault. Sometimes, things just take time. |
| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 03:02 AM PST 1. A Place of TranquilityIn your own home, no other place could quite possibly be more tranquil than the garden. Unless, of course, you prefer the toilet. But that’s another story. 2. A Place of Make BelieveLet’s say you have the power to organize or set your own Golden Globes table. Who would you invite? Who would you have sitting next to you? 3 . A Place of MysteryDo you like graveyards? Our fab writer Melanie here does. Check out the link to know why. I like the third reason she stated. 4. A Place of HopeThe holidays may have turned your world upside down or you may have experienced something heartbreaking recently but you should not give up. Read Cassandra’s wonderful post to be inspired. 5. A Place of RememberingThis is a figurative place, of course. I don’t know about you but I like being in that state of mind where I am inspired by the trends of the past. How about the 50s? What do you think of these places, ladies? Any of these close to your heart? Top Photo Credit: Brandon Christopher Warren |
| 7 Cool Stocking Stuffers for Couples … Posted: 03 Jan 2011 02:42 AM PST The following 7 cool stocking stuffers for couples might give you some good gift ideas. Whether you are looking for a gift that you and your significant other can use together or for a present to give to a favorite couple you know, the list below might be helpful. If you've come across any great stocking stuffers to give to couples, please feel free to share them in the comment section. 7. A vintage game of TwisterThis might not be the most romantic game around, but it sure is a lot of fun! I think giving your loved one a game of Twister for Christmas would be excellent fun for both of you. Actually getting the box that Twister comes in to fit in a stocking will be the most difficult part of giving this gift as a stocking stuffer! 6. Gift CertificateHomemade gift certificates work just as well as ones purchased from a store. Making your own gift certificates enables you to make them as personal as you wish. For instance, creating a gift certificate for one free backrub might contain fine print at the bottom that states the certificate is only valid in conjunction with a return backrub. This means you will only supply the backrub as long as you are guaranteed one in return. 5. Monogrammed Wine GlassesCouples who like to enjoy a nice glass of wine together might find a pair of His and Hers wine glasses to be a cool gift. Each wine glass could have a name or nickname etched into it, instead of the generic 'his' and 'hers', for a bit more personal touch. |

| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 12:36 AM PST Bejeweled … I never thought this would be a game that I would play. I am the type of girl who likes video games like World of Warcraft, Halo, Gears of War, Bioshock and all of those fun games. However, I remembered that I liked the Tetris games and especially liked Tetris Attack, which was on the Super Nintendo. Therefore, I decided that I would start playing Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook and that is when it all started. I tried a demo of Bejeweled 3 and ended up buying that one. I actually just purchased Bejeweled Twist today along with Mortal Combat, which is on Xbox 360 as an early Birthday present, but have not gotten the chance to play them yet. I love getting high scores and beating my friends and husband on Facebook, but I also love playing it by myself. So, right now, I am going to give you 7 tips on playing Bejeweled … 7. MultiplierSurely, if you play Bejeweled, you know what a multiplier is, right? The multiplier is the key. Multipliers are created when you get rid of twelve or more jewels with one move. Make as many multipliers as you can on the screen, then get them to explode. If you have a power gym next to it, then explode that. 6. StrategyIn Bejeweled Blitz, you are able to move gems before the game even starts. So, get ready and start moving before the announcer says "Go." This is definitely something that you need to take advantage of. 5. Be PatientWhen you are playing this game, you definitely need to be patient. You need to try your best to group colors together. If you do this, you will be more likely to create a power gem. |
