| 8 Reasons to Adopt a Pet Rather Than Buy … Posted: 06 Jan 2011 11:01 AM PST I'm involved in cat welfare, and so I see first-hand the consequences of abandoned animals and how many there are looking for a home. Often these animals are overlooked in favour of buying from a breeder or petshop – here are some compelling reasons why it is better to adopt rather than buy. 1. Homeless …With the connections that I have in animal rescues all over the country, I see again and again the high numbers of cats and dogs in need of a home, and how difficult it is to find enough homes for them. Every adoption means one lucky animal gets a home, and another the chance to be promoted. 2. Discourage BreedingThere are good breeders, and there are those who are only in it for the money. Many animals are bred without care for character and health problems, and the mothers forced to have litter after litter. Plus, the more animals that are specially bred, the less chance that an abandoned animal has of being homed. 3. No More Pet ShopsIt breaks my heart to see kittens and puppies shut up in perspex cages, without room to play. If people refused to buy animals kept in these conditions, then pet shops would be forced to end the practice. Adopt from a shelter instead. |
| 8 Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions … Posted: 06 Jan 2011 10:51 AM PST Making a list of New Year’s resolutions is easy. Actually keeping them throughout the year is much, much more difficult. It’s so easy to forget about them, to procrastinate and keep putting them off, so you never end up crossing anything off your list. It doesn’t have to be that way, though, as you will see with these 8 ways to keep your New Year’s resolutions. 1. Be RealisticYou have to know your limitations and be realistic with making resolutions. For instance, saying you’re going to lose a huge amount of weight just in the month of January isn’t realistic, because you can’t really do that in a healthy manner. Saying you’re going to lose weight by eating right and exercising throughout the whole year, however, that can be done. 2. Start SimplyAt the same time, you don’t want to get too complex too quickly. For example, you don’t want to decide that you’re going to quit smoking cold turkey. You have to take your time, be patient, and work hard, whether you want to quit smoking, lose weight, or start eating healthier foods. 3. Display ThemMore often than not, you make a list of resolutions and then shove it in a drawer somewhere. You’re the only one who knows about your resolutions, so it’s easy to make excuses or forget them. So, put them on display. Make sure you see them every single day, so you don’t forget the promises you’ve made to yourself. |
| Posted: 06 Jan 2011 10:49 AM PST Do you think of Christmas as being all about Santa, decorating the tree and eating the traditional dinner? It may be so in some countries, but others have some truly odd customs. Here are some very strange ways of celebrating the holiday … 1. CatalunyaI live in this region of north-east Spain, which has some very distinct traditions. Few nativity scenes are complete without the figure of a caganer. What is this, you may ask? A shepherd? A house? No – a man defecating. Yes, really. In a nativity scene. The origins of the caganer are not known, and probably defy explanation. You can even buy versions based on famous people. 2. ItalyI'm not one to bother with putting up a Christmas tree (with three cats in the house, it would be asking for trouble). However, I'm not sure that I fancy adopting the Italian tradition of getting a small wooden pyramid and decorating it with fruit. How do you get the fruit to stay on? And why pyramids – is it a reference to the Middle East? 3. GreenlandHmm, what shall we have for Christmas dinner? Turkey? Goose? Nut Roast? Or a rotting auk? Yup, the Greenlanders like their Christmas bird to be buried for several months before they tuck in. Perhaps Greenland's geographical isolation is to blame here … |
| Posted: 06 Jan 2011 10:41 AM PST I find that men eat up just about any type of compliment you can give them. It's almost as if they live for compliments. The 8 ways to compliment a man that I've mentioned below might work on your guy. It never hurts to try and see what type of response you get. Feel free to comment on these, pass them on to friends, or add your own! 8. Praise him on a current achievementGuys like to be told that they've done a good job on something. Maybe he got a promotion at work and needs a little pat on the back. If there is something that he has been working hard towards for a long time, then let him know you've noticed all the effort he's put into it. Completing a fitness program or a marathon that he's been training for is also reason to offer him a bit of praise. 7. Acknowledge his gaming skillsIf you live with guys who play video games, then you know how excited they get when they reach a new level. They also get wound up about new characters and finding a stash of something valuable that gives them more power in the game. Congratulate him on his exceptional gaming skills. I'm sure he'll be thrilled that you've noticed what a master of the game controller he is. 6. Voice your appreciation for things he doesEven the little things around the house shouldn't go unmentioned. Women tend to notice when something has been moved, painted, fixed, adjusted, or altered in any form or fashion. Let your man know that you appreciate what he has done around the house. If you wait too long, he'll probably point it out to you. He'll still relish the compliment, but it will mean a lot more if you can give the compliment before your guy points out exactly what he's done for you. |
| Posted: 06 Jan 2011 10:30 AM PST I love the symbolism of eternity rings, not to mention the gorgeous sparkle and shine. They represent unending love and beauty — what a lovely sentiment, even to a decided anti-romantic like me. I've asked for one for Christmas this year, and though my boyfriend pretends he's not going to make that wish come true, I know he's at least thinking about it. On the off chance he might be reading this, or if you're considering using one as a wedding or anniversary band, here are 7 beautiful eternity rings. 1. Solstice Eternity Diamond Ring
 2. Luxe Eternity Shared Prong Diamond Ring
 3. Tiara Eternity Diamond and Sapphire Ring

| 7 Resolutions for a Wealthier 2011 … Posted: 06 Jan 2011 09:45 AM PST There are a lot of things we women do all year long to sabotage our own financial well-being. Well, it's the start of a brand-new year, so let's be super-savvy super-savers and make some resolutions for a wealthier 2011… 1. Know your scoreA less-than-perfect credit score can mean you'll pay higher interest rates, if you can get a loan at all. That's why it's so important to know your credit score with the three different credit agencies. Each year, they're required to give you a copy for free. If you see an error, fix it right away! It will take time and persistence, but a better credit rating will mean big savings. 2. File the FAFSADid you know there are hundreds of thousands of Americans that qualify for financial aid for college every year, but don't ever use that money? Why pay for tuition and books if you don't have to! Right after you file your tax return each year, file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to see if you qualify. It's free, it's fast, and it's easy. It could also save you thousands of dollars each semester in tuition! 3. Save, save, saveEven if you're only socking away $20 a week in a low-interest account, it's important to make a resolution to save this year. That $20 may have bought two tall double-whip lattes, or a new scarf, but having a little nest-egg for emergencies, rather than relying on credit cards, is much more important. |
| 9 Ways to Boost your Immune System … Posted: 06 Jan 2011 09:40 AM PST A strong immune system is needed. For those of you who enjoy being healthy (I know all of you do), you need to know some ways to boost your immune system. Today, you are in luck, because I am going to give you 9 ways to boost your immune system … 9. LemonsBe sure to stop into that lemonade stand and get you a cup of fresh lemonade. This is one of the best ways to build the acid-alkali balance up. Apple cider vinegar is another good way to build the body's alkalinity, but it is not going to taste as good as lemons! 8. Drink WaterBe sure to drink your water! Did you know that most headaches come about, because you are no getting enough water? In daily doses, you should be drinking half your body weight in pounds. 7. Stop with the CaffeineI'm not sure if I could ever do this one. Stop drinking coffee and other drinks with caffeine. Caffeine is only robbing your body of vitamins and minerals. It is also known to dehydrate you. If you drink coffee, make sure you add an extra two glasses of water per cup of coffee. Mineral supplements will help the damage the caffeine does to your body as well. |
| 8 Ways to Dress Up Your Walls … Posted: 06 Jan 2011 09:22 AM PST My house has plain white walls, and we are dying to dress them up and make them pop. Winter is a good time to do it for us, because you get stuck inside so often and have nothing else to do. I went on a search for ideas, and found these fantastic 8 ways to dress up your walls! 1. Paint
Photo Credit: tiexano Naturally you can paint, and by that I don’t even mean painting everything a solid color. You can do designs, all you need is a can of paint in a different color and a few rolls of painters tape. You can come up with pretty much any design you can think up, and the results are sure to be awesome. If you, too, have white walls, this is especially easy – you may only need one coat, in fact! 2. Wallpaper
Photo Credit: pinklovesbrown Wallpaper is a great option, if you find something you like. You don’t have to wallpaper your whole room, or even the entire wall. You can stripe this as well, or go half and half with trim in between the paint and the paper. And since wallpapers are getting so much more innovative, you won’t have to go with anything old-fashioned – unless you want to, of course! 3. Decals
Photo Credit: Wall Tattoos by SURFACE Collective Wall stickers and decals are becoming increasingly popular. You can find chandelier silhouettes, decals of the Eiffel Tower, and just about anything else you can possibly imagine. They come in all different colors, sizes, and designs, and make it easy to redecorate without doing any hard work. Plus, you can remove them easily as well. |
| 7 Misconceptions about Biker Chicks … Posted: 06 Jan 2011 09:12 AM PST The weather is terrible for days here and I really miss the rides, girls. So excuse me if I'm being kind of boring with all the bike-related topics. However, I've thought of an interesting thing to talk about today – biker chicks. And I mean real biker chicks, not wannabes or models that were paid to dress up in leather and pose next to the bike. Being a mere "passenger" I can only express my deepest admiration for these girls. However, some myths deserve to get busted, right here and right now. So, here's what I've been able to collect so far: 1. They are not feminineBefore I've met my fiancé and gained unlimited access to the local biker community, I also believed biker chicks are more of a tom boys than girly girls. However, as Molder always believed, the truth is out there… and the funny thing about the truth is that it always turns out to be different than you've expected it to be. So, yup, biker chicks do everything all other girls do- they wouldn't show up to a black tie event wearing their riding gear. In fact, a biker chick can give you the best advice on waterproof makeup and ways to style your hair so it doesn't get messed up under a hat (or, in her case, a helmet). 2. Their body is covered with tattoosNone of the bikers or biker chicks I know has any tattoos. Not even one! I mean, we spend our summers on the beach, I'd certainly notice a tattoo. Right? My fiancé and I know a couple that's obsessed with piercings but I'd hardly say that has anything to do with bikes. Some people like tattoos, some don't – that all there is to it. 3. They are easy to get withI've met a couple of girls that do fit the profile – they have already been with almost every guy from their company so they see organized trips as a chance to "browse outside the pack" and find new, interesting candidates. But, that's hardly the rule all girls obey. In fact, most biker chicks I know are either happily married or in a monogamous relationship. So, guys, the half-naked girls you see on bike shows are paid to act that way – they are not biker chicks, they are your dream turned into a reality. Why? So you would buy passes and visit the shows, of course! |
| Posted: 06 Jan 2011 03:21 AM PST Every few months or so, I decide it’s time to go on a diet. I mean, don’t we all? Now wether or not we get around to that diet is another story completely! Many of you out there probably have the same problems as I d when it comes to diets. No matter how far down you slash your calories, or how many grams of fat you cut out of your diet, you can’t seem to melt of those pounds! There are several common mistakes that dieters make and I’m about to share them with you. Once you know how to outsmart even the most common calorie traps, you’ll be dropping weight in no time at all! Plus you’ll have all the added health benefits. So here you go, 7 mistakes that dieters make! 1. Do The MathJust because something says “light” or “fat-free” does not mean it’s calorie free. Take a minute to stop and add up the calories per serving size. You may be able to eat a whole mini-pizza on your own, but that doesn’t mean it’s one serving size. Don’t forget, drinks have calories too! Calorie counts are based on a single serving, typically 8 oz for a beverage. Read all labels carefully and calculate costs before you stuff your face. You may be surprised by what you realize you’ve been scarfing down! 2. Don’t Clean Your PlateWe’re all told as little kids that we have to clean our plate before we can get dessert. This of course, is good for us when we’re little! We need to grow strong and healthy and not fill up on sweets entirely! But as adults, this habit carries over into our eating style-and not always in a good way! When the food looks and smells delicious, our eyes can be bigger than our stomachs and we end up heaping on-and scarfing down- more than necessary to fill our tummies. These added calories pack on the pounds! Dining out especially aggravates this habit because our mindset is “well, I paid for it, I better eat it all!”. And serving sizes always seem to larger portions than what you might cook and eat at home. So don’t clean your plate! stop eating when you feel full and you’ll reap the benefits! |
| 10 Pretty and Affordable Small Storage Items for your Home … Posted: 06 Jan 2011 02:19 AM PST I am not the most organized girl on Earth. I would say I have the potential to be one, though, what with my obsession with small storage solutions. Right now, I am in the middle of a “tin containers hoarding,” to the horror of my boyfriend. Thankfully, our nearest Ikea is an expensive plane ride away. Otherwise, I’d already have the following in our small studio apartment: 1. Tripp Storage Tin with Lid
Price: $3.99 at ikea A good price for a set of 3 containers that can surely make your kitchen look even more beautiful. If you are one of those people who have an all-white kitchen, these would fit perfectly with your overall design. You can use these to store coffee, tea, sugar packets, etc. 2. Lingo Clothes Box with LidPrice: $7.99 at ikea An organized closet is one thing but a pretty AND organized one is completely another. With the help of these boxes, you will immediately get yourself a closet worthy of a design magazine cover. 3. Dragan 3-piece Bathroom SetPrice: $19.99 at ikea A bit pricey but this set is perfect for use in damp spaces. I’m crushing on the minimalist and organic design. This is made of bamboo (a sustainable material), too. |
| Posted: 06 Jan 2011 02:07 AM PST Cabbage, Brussels sprouts, spinach, broccoli and collard greens can be dangerous to those individuals that are on a blood thinning drug Coumadin. These are the key to blood clotting as it liver and beef as they are rich in vitamin K. You should also not mix bananas with a diuretic as this could be too much potassium. Would you like to know some more of my 7 dangerous combinations? 7. Caffeine with AlcoholYes, there has been a lot of concern with mixing caffeine with alcohol and really, I can't think of anyone who would actually want to do this! Why would you want to? I guess I've never really been into alcohol – I like remembering things. Anyhow, there's a drink on the market today that is being banned from certain states (I'm not going to name any names). This drink has a mix of alcohol and caffeine – this is a dangerous combination. 6. Wine and BeerYou can do this, but the reaction could be fatal. Certain individuals are not able to handle 2 different types of alcohol. I think you should avoid drinking these two together – you know, just to be on the safe side as they are listed as a dangerous combination. 5. Painkillers with AlcoholPlease do not mix any of your painkillers with alcohol. This could equal a fatality that you could easily avoid. So, it's either one or the other – never both. |
| 7 Ways to Transform Yourself for the New Year … Posted: 06 Jan 2011 01:39 AM PST A new year, a new you, right? There are lots of ways you can better yourself in the new year, whether you make resolutions are not. Here are 7 ways to transform yourself for the New Year. See if they suit you, if they ring any bells, or if you think any of these are something you would like to do! 1. Get a New AttitudeThe new year is a perfect time to get a new attitude. That doesn’t mean you have to completely reinvent your attitude. You might simply want to start thinking more positively, or you may want to stop sweating the small things. Either way, it’s a perfect time for this kind of change. 2. Stop ProcrastinatingI think everyone procrastinates at some point, over some things. I do it all the time even when I know I shouldn’t be doing it. The dawning of 2011 is a great time to stop. Start planning the things you have to do and give yourself more time to do them. It will mean there will be much less stress in your life, and everyone can benefit from less stress, don’t you think 3. Grab a New HobbyIs there a hobby you’ve been wanting to try? Do you want to learn how to knit, rollerblade, or go kite boarding? Now is the perfect time to do it – or to start planning it, because I would never recommend rollerblading when it’s icy outside. Whatever the case, it’s the ideal time for a new hobby. If it’s something you can do indoors or something that’s snow friendly, more so the better! |
| Posted: 06 Jan 2011 01:25 AM PST Some trends never fade. Some looks are timeless. Some ideals of beauty are classic. It could be about hair, makeup, clothing, patterns, or anything, but some things don’t change. They are always beautiful, no matter who you are. Here are 9 classic beauty looks that just get better over time. 1. The BobThe bob is an iconic haircut that can, in its variations, look good with just about any facial type. It has gone through many evolutions so there are many variations now, from angled bobs to asymmetrical bobs. This is probably my favorite haircut, though I like to pair it with side swept bangs. 2. Basic BlackAs I believe I have said before, no matter what color trend comes about, black will always be the new black. It is chic, slimming, and beautiful. The cut of your clothing makes all the different, but you can never go wrong with black, especially if you highlight it with the right accents and colors. 3. Wavy HairSexy waves are another hairstyle that will never go out of style. Whether you have curly hair or straight hair, it is easy to make waves, and they will always look beautiful. What can be better than just braiding your hair overnight and letting it go the next morning? |
| Posted: 06 Jan 2011 01:12 AM PST Auctions are a lot of fun, even if you aren’t interested in bidding on anything. I’ve been going to auctions for many years. It all started when I was very young and my parents would attend auctions, in hope of finding something super cool. Today, my husband and I attend the occasional auction just for fun. Here are 7 reasons I enjoy auctions. 7. You never know what you will findThe best types of auctions are estate sales. These are generally very large and they have tons of stuff being sold off. There are random boxes full of who-knows-what that go for extremely low prices. You never know what type of rare item you will find in these boxes that were dug out of the basement. 6. Auctions are a great way to pass timeThere really isn’t a whole lot to do around here at times. Saturday morning auctions are an excellent way to pass the day. It’s best when two or three auctions are going on in the same day. Since this is such a small town, the auctions are usually hosted by the same auctioneer. When he is pressed for time, he will have at least two auctions in the same day; one in the morning and the other in the evening. |
| 9 Steps to Organize Your Bag … Posted: 06 Jan 2011 01:02 AM PST Some call it a handbag, some call it a purse. Whatever you choose to call it, the bag is one of women's best friends. It serves so many purposes – locker, safety blanket, carrier, accessory – that it is no wonder that many women show love for their bags. As much as we love the look, feel, and emptiness of brand new bags, they do not stay that way forever. Bags, no matter how big or small, are not exempt from clutter and disorder. I've experienced having a messy bag and I have to admit how inefficient and frustrating it can be to search for a ringing phone, keys, and other things I might need. If you share this sentiment, then don't despair. You can achieve a cleaner and more organized bag in nine easy steps. 1. Dump the contents. In order to see everything you have in your bag, you need to dump all the contents on a flat surface. At the sight of the clutter, you will possibly feel mortified, horrified, amused, or a mix of those three emotions. But don't worry. The clutter will soon be eliminated. 2. Throw out the garbage.Your bag is not a waste receptacle so you want to throw out all the garbage you have. Find all tissue papers, candy and gum wrappers, unusable paper, and other trash. You should also throw out all receipts that you don't plan on filing or have no other purpose other than being rubbish. 3. Purge the unnecessary.Check all the things that came from your bag and determine what you will use on a daily basis. Set these things aside for sorting and organizing. Leave the unnecessary things out of your bag. Find a space for them at home or at your office. You don't want these things crowding and weighing down your bag. |
