| 7 Resolutions for a Healthier 2011 … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:05 AM PST Who doesn't want to be healthier in the New Year? There are so many big and small things we can do to be healthier, and this is the perfect time to resolve to do them! Here are 7 resolutions you can make for a healthier New Year… 1. Quit smokingSmoking is so bad for your looks and for your health, why on earth would you want to do it for another year? Stop now. Talk to your doctor and find a smoking cessation plan that works for you, then stick to it, and enjoy better respiratory health, a decreased risk of cancer and emphysema, as well as clearer, younger-looking skin, healthier hair, and whiter teeth. You can do it! 2. Eat 5 servings of fresh fruits and veggiesIf you want to be healthier, this is one simple thing you can do that will have an almost instant effect: starting eating the recommended amount of fresh fruits and veggies. They're tasty, and are loaded with anti-oxidants, vitamins, and fiber. There's a reason we're supposed to eat this much of them each day… so get to it! Stock up on apples, strawberries, carrots… anything that appeals to you. 3. Get checkedIf you're over 18 or are sexually active, make sure to get a pelvic exam (and perhaps a Pap smear) each year. If you're over 40, remember to get your annual mammogram. So many women's health issues have such a greater chance of cure if they're detected early enough… so schedule your appointment today! |
| 8 Skills You Can Teach Yourself On The Internet … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:03 AM PST Do you like learning and improving your skills? Would you like to attend classes, but don't have the time, money or accessible courses? Well, one thing you do have is the internet, which is full of resources for learning, many of them free. So here are some of the skills you can teach yourself. 1. LanguagesThis is probably one of the greatest resources on the internet. There are a wealth of sites offering all kinds of aids for language learning; try bbc.co.uk and pick your language! 2. CraftsMy mother taught me how to knit, but she doesn't know how to crochet. So when I fancied learning, I simply found a guide on the internet and taught myself. 3. InternetYes, you can learn how to use the internet … on the internet! Try bbc.co.uk Or this may be of use to an older relative who is learning how to use a computer (I've known many older folks get a new lease of life when they get their first computer). |
| 8 Nail Shapes And How to Choose the One For You … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:44 AM PST Here's one topic we all think, talk and worry about – nails! I've officially finished my year long abstinence, my nails are as good as new now, and I'm planning to have some great nails done for New Year's Eve party. That is, if my sister manages to squeeze me in her busy schedule. Yeah… nail artists these days… and you'd think blood relatives come first. Anyways, to keep the long story short – here's my list of possible and impossible-looking and yet doable nails shapes: 1. Round nails
Photo Credit: Körmönfont (Egerszegi Szilvia) Some girls love this nail shape while some think it's outdated… I, personally, wouldn't style my nails like this but I have to admit that this shape has its benefits. Like durability, for example. You see, smooth, rounded tip is not easy to chip or tear so round nails would be ideal for the ones who have weak nails and like to keep them short. 2. Square nails
Photo Credit: Körmönfont (Egerszegi Szilvia) Extremely square nails are very popular these days – add French manicure to them, and you'll have an ideal nails style to fit every occasion. This shape actually draws attention to the hands so I'd say it looks best on medium and long nails. Be careful with this shape, though, as you could easily chip the edges even if you have your nails styled with UV gel or acrylic. I'm actually quite an expert on that! Chipping edges, I mean… 3. Square with rounded top
Photo Credit: B_Zedan This is what you get when you combine the good features of the two shapes I've mentioned above. If you're a dedicated fan of square nails I'd suggest you try this one out – it can't hurt and it can reduce the chipping significantly. I'm sure you know how this looks but let me try to explain in just in case – you are supposed to file your nail sides straight, file the top like you're going for the square shape and then gently blend the edges until you're happy with the result. That means that you can adjust the shape get the look that goes from almost square to completely round at the top. |
| 8 Tips on Preventing a Hangover … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:42 AM PST One intense hangover can be enough to cause a person to decide against drinking heavily. I’ve known quite a few people who continue to drink a lot and then complain the next day about the massive hangover they have. I’d chalk this up to poor planning or lack of will-power. It is possible to enjoy alcoholic beverages without having a hangover the next day. Here are 8 tips on preventing a hangover. 8. Drink alcoholic beverages that aren't carbonatedThe carbonation in mixed beverages causes alcohol to be absorbed quicker into the blood stream. This means it’s probably not a good idea to add Red Bull or some other carbonated drink to any alcoholic beverage. Carbonated drinks might taste less alcoholic, but your body is actually getting more alcohol faster than if you simply skipped the carbonation all together. 7. Choose beverages that are less concentratedBeer and wine is a lot less concentrated than harder liquor and most mixed drinks. Drinking a pint of beer isn’t nearly the same as drinking a pint of whiskey. Hard liquor has a much higher proof; therefore it takes a lot less of it before you start to feel its effects. Sipping on a glass of wine lessens the chance of a hangover, since it will take a lot more wine to cause you to become inebriated. Hangovers don’t usually occur until after the drinking has stopped. 6. Drink a glass of milkDo this before drinking anything with alcohol in it. The milk will add a coating to the stomach and slow the absorption of alcohol. It isn’t always common to ask for a glass of milk while you’re sitting down at the bar, so be sure to drink a glass before heading to the bar. If you drink the milk too long before heading out, the milk coating on your stomach lining won’t be as protective as it would be if you drink the milk right before consuming alcoholic beverages. |

| 8 Ways to Deal with the Death of a Spouse … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:42 AM PST Losing a spouse is very devastating. But unfortuanely, in some point in time, many of us will lose someone close to us. It is all a part of life – where there is life, there is going to be loss. Below, I am going to give you 8 ways to deal with the death of your beloved spouse … 8. Realize You Are Not AloneDuring the year 2002, there were about 800,000 new widows and widowers. I know, you will be sad, but you need to look at the statistics and realize that you are not the only one dealing with this great loss. 7. Tend to your NeedsDespite the hard times, please don't forget that you need to attend to your basic needs. You need to eat, drink and sleep. Sometimes, people get so overwhelmed that they forget that they need to keep themselves alive. 6. Find a ProfessionalThere are professionals that specialize in grief and loss counseling. Before your first session, take out a pen and paper and write down your thoughts. Write down anything that you are confused about. |
| 7 Ways to Make Your Home Smell Incredible … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:02 AM PST At my house, we are having guests for the holidays, for quite a long stretch. At my house, we also have lots of pets. Lots of them. I mean, we’re not quite animal hoarders yet, but I think we could classify for the junior division. So anyway, I want the house to smell nice. I’d want it to smell great anyway, but now it’s especially important, so I went on the hunt – and here are the results: 7 ways to make your home smell incredible! 1. CandlesNothing beats candles. They are classic. There are so many holiday themed candles available right now, you really can’t go wrong. What I like to do is buy several different candles, but make sure their scents complement one another. So I might have apple pie candles in the living room, cinnamon scented candles in the kitchen, and vanilla scented ones in the bathroom or bedrooms. Then I start to get hungry, but at least the house smells nice. 2. IncenseIncense is great, but tricky. The incense sticks can be such a ginormous mess: even when you have a holder, those ashes end up everywhere, you know? I recommend the conical incense sticks myself, because they can go just about anywhere, make far less mess, and are still quite pungent. You can tuck them away anywhere and they’ll make your home smell divine. 3. Scented OilsOil burners, oil "candles," and things like that are becoming a popular alternative to traditional candles. I like these quite a bit, but I don’t know, maybe I’m buying the wrong brands, but they never seem to smell a lot. I don’t want something overpowering, but I have noticed some of these giving off really weak scents. |
| 8 Tips to Spice Up Your Date Night … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 08:57 AM PST Whether you’re married, living with someone, or just dating, it can be hard to come up with ideas that keep life exciting and spicy. Even married and long term couples need to schedule date nights. If you spend every evening in the house, eating dinner and watching television, it’s bound to negatively affect your relationship in lots of ways, some big and some small. Rather than let that happen, check out these 8 ways to spice up your date night! 1. Just DanceLady Gaga may not be the go-to expert for relationship advice, but she’s got this one right. If you’ve always wanted to learn to dance or if you already know how, what could be better? There’s lots of potential for spice when you’re spending time pressed up against one another, moving to the rhythm of a song you love. If you decide to take dancing lessons together, then you also have the option of going out to practice what you’ve learned. 2. Penning Love LettersWriting each other love letters before you meet up for a date has lots of potential as well. You can get risque, romantic, or both. However, this is not the only option. You might try passing each other little love notes full of suggestions and flirty message while you’re at the movies, having dinner with another couple, or seeing a show together. Anything to heighten the anticipation of getting together at the end of the night is a good thing. Text messaging makes this easy as well – but make sure your phone is on vibrate or silent! 3. Full Moon MadnessPlanning dates around the full moon can be incredibly exciting. Maybe it’s just me, but I do often feel friskier and more excited when the moon is full. This option is especially excellent during warmer weather, because you can go skinny dipping or just for moonlit swims. Moonlight strolls are equally romantic, and frankly, there’s nothing like stealing kisses beneath a big, bold moon. |
| 7 Foods You Thought Were Healthy, But Aren’t … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 08:52 AM PST We're all trying so hard to eat more nutritious foods, not just to lose or maintain weight, but to make sure we're getting everything we need to be healthy and happy. We eat our five servings of fruits and veggies each day, try to add whole grains when we can, and study nutritional labels… but a few foods slip through the cracks and avoid our scrutiny because we've always thought of them as "health foods." But some are not! Here's a list of 7 foods you thought were healthful, but aren't. 1. Chicken noodle soup
We've all heard, and perhaps even felt, the healing, restorative powers of chicken noodle soup, ideal for curing colds and flus and general malaise. But did you know it's loaded with sodium, and can also be filled with fat? Before you buy a canned soup, check the label and pass if it's less-than-worthy of your affection (or ingestion). Instead, make your own, or buy the low-sodium "healthy choice" options. 2. Bottled juices and teas
You would think fruit juice and iced tea would be a better choice than sodas, but did you know that most of the bottled single-serve juices and teas contain just as much sugar, and very little actual juice or tea? Again, check the label to see what's actual in the juice or tea before you buy it. If it contains high fructose corn syrup, or the "sugars" inside are more than 12g, then you should pass… and grab a bottle of water, or REAL juice, instead. 3. Sandwiches
I am a great fan of the sandwich, especially flatbread sandwiches and pita rolls. But did you know that these aren't necessarily healthy choices either? Many lunch meats are loaded with fat and sodium, and tuna and chicken salads can be made with far more mayonnaise than they have to. Check nutritional information on sandwiches and subs from restaurants, and opt for low-fat mayo (if available) or veggie subs with little or low-fat dressing. |
| 8 Travel Tips for the Holiday Season … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 05:31 AM PST There are so many more people traveling during the holidays. Having safe travels and keeping high spirits while you do so makes the trip more enjoyable for everyone involved. Here are 8 travel tips for the holiday season. It doesn't matter what method of transportation you are using, I'm sure there are at least a couple of tips listed below that will come in handy. 8. Give copies of your travel plans to at least two other peopleNot only do I carry a complete set of itineraries with me, but I also give one to my family and one to the party I'm meeting. In my opinion the more people who know exactly where I am the better. This also gives me at least two people to contact in case I end up losing my own copy of this pertinent information. 7. Allow for plenty of additional timeIf you are traveling by train or on a plane, you'll want to make sure to allow yourself a lot of extra time. It will take longer to get to the terminal, to check in any luggage you are carrying on, and to get through pretty much any line you will encounter. It's usually one of those 'hurry up and wait' situations. 6. Be prepared for delaysI always take along enough extra clothing to tie me over in case my schedule gets altered by an unforeseen situation. I've had my luggage arrive the day after I did to my destination. I've had to stay the night in a place I hadn't planned on and was always thankful for the extra clothes and toothbrush I'd kept with me. If you are driving somewhere, then having extra snacks and bottles of water in the car might come in handy if you are stuck in traffic. My mom and I were caught in a 5 hour delay on the highway on a trip to a friend's wedding. We were so glad we thought to bring along some extra food and drinks! |

Perhaps it’s time to take out my gray tights again… 5. BlackDo you think that black cats bring bad luck? Would you feel strange if a black cat crosses your path? I personally think that’s silly. | 10 Warning Signs That a Guy Is Bad News … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 02:45 AM PST Not every guy is bad news, but as all of you ladies reading probably know, you do sometimes run across a guy that is just wrong for you. That doesn’t mean that he’s an awful person, just that he’s really not the right choice for you at the time. Some guys are players – and so are some girls. It happens. But it can be heartbreaking and painful, and it’s always better to avoid a scene like that, so here are 10 warning signs that a guy may be bad news. 1. Vague LabelsI know not every girl is interested in having a label, but sometimes you need to know where you stand. If a guy is not willing to say whether you’re a girlfriend or just a friend with benefits or simply someone he’s interested in casually dating, you might want to step back and look for someone else. You might be a booty call, or you might just be trying to get with a guy who is not yet ready for a relationship, but isn’t willing to actually say so. 2. High ExpectationsOnly you know what you’re comfortable doing on a first, second, or third date, and so on. If you are interested in something casual, that is also cool. If, however, you are looking for something a bit more serious, then you need to pay attention to a guy’s intentions. If he seems to fully expect that you’re going to sleep with him right away, without even finishing the date, it’s probable that he’s not really interested in getting to know you – beyond what kind of panties you’re wearing. 3. Heavy HinterEven if a guy is not looking for the same things you are, you have to respect honesty – and you have to take it seriously. Many guys are more than willing to be upfront about the fact that they really aren’t looking for a serious relationship. If the guy you’re dating says that he’s not really the kind of guy who’s ready to be your boyfriend right now, listen. Don’t try to change him, don’t think you can fix it – that’s a good way to get hurt. |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2011 02:37 AM PST Do you know why I am writing this post right now? Well, I will tell you in a couple of seconds, but first – I was to explain something. I have never been a fan of little dogs – NEVER. I always loved big dogs and I still do. Pit Bulls are still my favorite and there is always a place in my heart for my pit – Copper. Recently, we have added a new member to our family. His name is Dackles, a full blooded dachshund. He was a Christmas present from "Santa" for my daughter. Yes, an early Christmas present that took me a long time to find. Basically, he's a rescue – remember, don't support puppy mills when pets are in need of adoption. Right now, I am going to give you 7 facts on Dachshunds … 7. The NameThe name Dachshund is German. It literally translates into "badger dog." 6. SizeThere are three different sizes of these dogs and yes, the size does matter. You have the miniature, full grown and the kanichen. Our dog is a miniature. A full grown dachshund will weigh between sixteen and twenty eight pounds. The miniature will usually weight less than eleven pounds. The kanichen will weight anywhere from seven to nine ponds. They are so low to the ground, so they are well capable of going through tunnels. 5. TempermentThey are strong headed dogs. To be honest with you, my pup is not strong headed at all and he is around one years of age. They say they have a loud bark, but mine doesn't. However, he does growl at unfamiliar people, but has not bitten them. Once he sees it is okay, he stops. |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2011 01:14 AM PST I’m not a huge fan of Windows. It has its purposes and I never had any qualms with it in the past. However, once I became used to Ubuntu, I couldn’t imagine life without it! If you’ve never gotten the chance to try out Ubuntu, I highly recommend using it at least once. The following 7 reasons I like Ubuntu might inspire you to give this computer operating system a whirl. 7. I never get a message that my computer can’t read a new deviceNo matter what external device I plug into my computer, Ubuntu knows exactly what to do with it. I don’t get messages telling me that the latest software has to be downloaded in order for my new printer to be usable. I can plug in a digital camera into my computer and Ubuntu knows what type of camera it is without any new programs being downloaded. I have yet to find something that Ubuntu doesn’t recognize. 6. It’s easy to useI think Ubuntu is very user friendly. It is set up in a way that is simple to understand. The icons are all straightforward and it’s easy to find things. I don’t find myself going in circles looking for something as simple as the ‘print’ button. Ubuntu is so easy to navigate, even for first time users. I can’t recall ever becoming frustrated when I first used Ubuntu. I’ve always had a very pleasant experience with it. |
| 8 Important Pre-Workout Activities … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 01:04 AM PST I don't know about you, but when I work out, I don't just jump in and do the exercise. It is important for me to prepare my mind, body, and things. I am quite sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. While many people jump into their workout once they get to the gym, there are also others who have pre-workout routines. The pre-workout routine helps ease the mind and body into exercise mode. If you have a hard time following through with your exercise plan, then maybe you should consider creating your own pre-workout routine. Here are eight activities that you might want to include in your routine. 1. Plan Your WorkoutBefore you do anything, you should plan your workout. This is important so you don't overwork your body and muscles. If you are strength training, you might want to work different muscle groups on alternating days. If you run or walk, you might want to plan out your distance or duration. If you are into sports, you might think of working on your technique or doing strengthening workouts. 2. Mental PreparationExercise does not only involve physical preparation. It is also involves mental power and preparation. Before your daily workout, you should prepare your mind to deal with the challenges – mental, physical, and emotional – that you might encounter. 3. Clothing and Gear PreparationMake sure that you have everything you need to make your workout experience as hassle-free as possible. You should have the right apparel for your chosen exercise. If you use gadgets such as sports and GPS watches, heart monitors, and mp3 players, then check to make sure that they are in good working condition and that the batteries are charged. If you use accessories and exercise equipment, make sure they are clean and ready to be used. Prepare the exercise clothes and gear hours before your workout to prevent delays. |
| Posted: 07 Jan 2011 12:50 AM PST Making a difference in someone’s life, or the community, or even for some, the world, is a very rewarding experience. You don’t have to be some well-known person to make a difference around you. Here are some ideas to help you make a difference in the lives of others around you! 1. VolunteerCharity organizations all over the United States and around the world welcome any extra help as they help to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Chances are, there is an organization like this close to you. Volunteer your time to feed the homeless, or collect Christmas gifts for poor children in your area. You can even volunteer with different groups in the Red Cross organization. My parents used to participate in one where you were contacted by friends and family attempting to get in touch with people in the military. Sometime, you had to deliver sad news like a death in the family, but other times, you got to be the joyous bearer of good news of new babies born and such. It’s a very rewarding experience! 2. Angel TreeThe “Angel tree” is one way that you can make a difference in a small child’s life. Go to your local Walmart or grocery store that participates with this organization, and grab a name off the tree. This gives you the opportunity to make a child’s Christmas day brighter with toys and clothing that otherwise, they would never be able to enjoy! Give a smile! 3. Donate ClothingRather than having a neighborhood garage sale day, recruit your neighbors to participate in a day to gather un-needed clothing and such from their homes and take to charity locations around your community. Though Goodwill has its place, I recommend finding organizations that give clothing to the needy for free. As a neighborhood, you can make a difference! |
| 7 Reasons Not to Lie to Your Partner . … Posted: 07 Jan 2011 12:32 AM PST Lying is never a good thing, no matter who you do it to. When you do it to your partner, then there may be something wrong in your relationship. Perhaps you don't trust them enough with the truth. Either way you go, you should learn to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. Do it as if your life depends on it, because it will find its way back to you. Below, I am going to give you 7 reasons not to lie to your partner … 7. You Will Feel GuiltyWhen you lie to your partner, you are going to live life with a guilty feeling. You know, that feeling, right? It becomes hard to sleep at night and every move he or she makes, you think it is because they found out. 6. They Will Find OutSpeaking in finding out, they will find out. It just goes without saying that when you tell a lie, it is going to come back and kick you in the butt. 5. The Trust Will be GoneWhen you lie to someone and the truth is officially out, it will be hard to gain that trust back. However, that does not mean that it is not possible. The partner is going to have a hard time believing you. I mean, you told them a lie before, what makes this time any different? |
