| 8 Items You Need for the Grunge Trend … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 11:29 AM PST OMG. Grunge is coming back! I am so excited! I love paying attention to the latest trends and styles, but I have never in life been so completely excited. I think I’ve mentioned about a million times how much I loved this style back in the day – and now that it’s back with an edgier, more modern twist, I couldn’t be happier. If you’re excited too, check out these 8 items you need for the grunge trend! 1. A Little Floral Dress
Whether it’s a baby baby doll dress or something a bit subtler, you need a little floral piece. It gives a feminine edge to the whole grunge style, and looks spectacularly stellar with tights, leggings, and combat boots. It has the added bonus of being versatile, so you can wear it even when you aren’t doing the grunge thing. 2. Bedhead
Either you can put down the hair brush, or you can spend an hour styling your hair so it looks like you didn’t do anything to it. Both options will work for the grunge look! However, I do not recommend the dirty, stringy, greasy look. I mean, that worked back in the day, but I’m not sure how many of us would want to try pulling it off now. 3. The Obligatory Flannel Shirt
Grunge isn’t grunge without flannel – preferably layered. And hey, there’s nothing more comfortable than a favorite old flannel shirt, one that’s been washed so many times it feels like gauzy cotton. That is my absolute favorite! |
| 10 of My Favorite Celebrity Style Icons … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 11:16 AM PST Whether we like it or not or want to admit it or not, all of us are touched by celebrity style at one point or another. You might not mimic a celebrity’s fashion sense, but you probably at least admire someone famous out there. Here are 10 of my favorite celebrity style icons, and why I find them iconic. 1. Sandra Bullock
I love Sandra Bullock for her class and taste. She’s had it since she first really became famous, and it never fails her. I think she’s one of the most graceful actresses of my time, on the big screen or off, and her recent troubles have certainly proven that. 2. Khloe Kardashian
All right, I know this seems a little weird, because the Kardashians are kind of iconic for all the wrong reasons, but hear me out here. Khloe is seriously one of the only fuller figured girls I have ever seen on reality TV, besides shows like The Biggest Loser, Celebrity Fit Club, and so on. I love the way she loves her body, but for the most part, doesn’t let it all hang out there to overcompensate. 3. Reese Witherspoon
Reese is so adorable. I love her outfits in movies, on the red carpet, and just out and about. She knows what looks good and she’s not afraid to try new things, plus she works whatever she’s wearing at the moment. She is the current epitome of chic simplicity. |
| 10 Adorable Valentine’s Day Gifts (For Her) … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 10:06 AM PST So what are your plans for February 14? For those who are romantically involved, have you shopped for a gift for your boy/girl? If the answer is no to the previous question, this short gift guide will help you. Take note, though, that these are gifts ideal for girls. To ladies who are reading this, you may bookmark this post and find a subtle way to make the boyfriend read it. Or, you know, point and say “I want this, PLEASE.” 1. Pincushion Necklace
Price: $45 at shanalogic I sew. I craft. And yes, I let the boyfriend know that I want this necklace. In a subtle way, of course. You will love this neckalce because the red felt looks gorgeous paired with the silver-colored thimble and sterling silver chain. This comes with real push pins, too. Great for emergencies, methinks. 2. Emily Rose Cameo NecklacePrice: $15 at shanalogic The perfect gift for a girly-girl! Not only is the cameo pendant in adorable pink, the ball chain is as well. For guys, give this to your girl with a note along the lines of “you make me see the world through rose-colored glasses” or something like that. We’ll guarantee that she’ll swoon! 3. LoveyePrice: $29 at shanalogic This wonderfully handmade plushie will be a perfect sleeping companion for your girl. We suggest that you don’t give it with a note that says “I’m keeping an eye on you.” That’s just wrong. 4. Glass Stitched Heart NecklacePrice: $35 at shanalogic Something for a girl with slightly morbid interests. Or someone who loves Dexter, medical shows, or unique jewelry. The stitched heart pendant isn’t the only great thing about this necklace. The lock and key toggle clasp is awesome, too. |

| 8 Things I Would Change About the World … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 10:02 AM PST Being just one person, there is a lot that I cannot accomplish by myself. However, if it were possible, there are at least 8 things I would change about the world. Keep in mind that my list is purely hypothetical, since I know there’s a very slim chance that I could ever do any of these things all on my own. 8. Hour long naps would be mandatory at workI really doubt that I would hear much complaining from people who had to take time out of work to go take a nap. Even if you weren't the napping type, I bet you could at least find it easy enough to just relax for an hour each day, especially if you are still getting paid for it! I usually feel the need for a nap right around 2pm. Something about this specific hour just causes me to feel completely drained of energy. I'd be all for a mandatory naptime! 7. Free movie night would be offered once a month for every familyI think being able to look forward to a free movie night each month would be excellent! Even if it's a movie that came out last year or a classic flick from the past, it would still be fun. I think the hard part would be having enough room for everyone to get in their free monthly movie viewing. I don't know if there are enough theaters to accommodate everyone. 6. Spaying and neutering of animals would be a free serviceIt's difficult to come up with the funds to spay or neuter an animal. I know people say that you shouldn't be a pet owner if you can't afford to take care of it properly. Well, for the price to spay just one cat, I could buy enough cat food to feed all of my cats for 6 months. It's an expensive process that most people try to avoid, which results in tons of kittens and puppies being given away each year. |
| 7 Tips on Buying Stuff from People on Craigslist … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 09:58 AM PST Oh yes, the ever so popular Craigslist. This site has been in the media more than once for different things. While we are not going to mention those things right here, we are going to give you 7 tips on buying stuff from people on Craigslist … 7. Meet in a Public PlaceActually, before I buy something from someone off of Craigslist, I make sure I do my research on the individual. I look at their social networking accounts and see what type of person they are. Of course, people are good manipulators. They may create a false Facebook account to make themselves look good, so you shouldn't always go by this. Whatever you do, you should meet in a public place during the day time. Whenever I sell stuff on Craigslist, I am sure to meet in public. 6. Call the PersonSure, they may put their e-mail address, but you should call the person if you are one hundred percent interested in what they have for sale. 5. NegotiateAs a seller on Craigslist, I have found that people always try to haggle the price down. Sometimes, I will go down on the price and sometimes the price is firm. Unless they say the price is firm, try to negotiate a price. Do this before you schedule a time and place to meet. |
| 7 Essential Accessories Every Woman Should Have … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 09:54 AM PST For a woman to look her best, she needs a few essential accessories that complement most things she wears. These accessories are timeless classics that have been around for a while. They remained popular because they are flattering, feminine and in some cases add a new dimension to an otherwise simple outfit. So without much further ado, here are the 7 essential accessories every woman should have. 1. High heeled closed pumps
A pair of black pumps has to find a place in any woman's wardrobe. A well-designed closed toe pair goes a long way towards making you look fabulous in whatever you wear. Whether it is combined with a cocktail dress or to jazz up a pair of jeans, these little wonders convert any outfit into a totally fabulous ensemble. 2. An oversized handbag
There is something about an oversized handbag that makes our arms and waist look tiny. This trend appears to be here to stay and offers a number of benefits apart from looking stylish. They can carry literally everything. So whenever you need to step out with your laptop, a spare diaper or 2 or even a meaty novel, you know where to stash it – in your oversized handbag. 3. A pair of dangling silver earrings
Dangling silver earrings go with practically everything and make you look more feminine and girly. If you pick a pair of hoops, you will probably find yourself wearing them every other day. They suit every face cut, hairstyle and clothing choice. Plus more than anything, guys love them. |
| Posted: 03 Feb 2011 09:39 AM PST It turns out that one of the most helpful tools in coping with daily life is right inside of you. It's always been there and it's just a matter of harnessing its full potential. What is this tool that I am talking about? It is laughter. Over the years, many studies have been conducted to find out the benefits of this highly contagious force. The results all point to one thing: laughter is good for the soul, the mind, and the body. Allow me to share the benefits of laughing more. 1. Increased HappinessLaughter helps your mental and emotional health by giving you a more positive outlook in life. It makes you feel good by allowing you to resolve negative emotions better. Humor makes life seem less threatening and overwhelming. 2. Deeper Romance and ConnectionsHumor and laughter are tools you can use to strengthen your relationships with your partner or lover, friends, family, and even co-workers. Laughing with others creates a positive bond that is definitely stronger than a negative bond. In romantic relationships, laughter keeps things fresh, exciting, and blissful. Overall, when you interject laughter and humor into your relationships, you become less guarded, less defensive, more open to possibilities, and more expressive of your feelings. 3. Attract Happy PeopleIt is not always true that like repels like while opposites attract. More often than not, you attract people who have similar beliefs and personality as you. If you are a happy and positive person, you attract more of those people. And really, who wouldn't want that? There is no room for negativity in our short lives. |
| 7 Reasons Jane Fonda Looks Good at 73 … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 08:58 AM PST You'd find it hard to find somebody who disagreed that Jane Fonda is looking fabulous at the age of 73 and even then they'd be a bitter jealous woman. Jane recently told a magazine that she thinks she looks better now than when she was in her twenties. That might be a tad overstating it but it's a statement borne out of total confidence that she has to be one of the sexiest septuagenarians we're likely to see. Back when Jane Fonda's Workout first hit the shelves of our video store (1982!), good ole Hanoi Jane was the butt of many a joke. That joke is now on a lot of others. Not only was it a huge hit but it spawned a new era in celebrity culture and Jane released her latest fitness program in 2010 (this time on DVD!) 1. She's regularJane exercises six days a week. (Well I think about it at least 6 times a week so we're on a par). 2. She's had plastic surgeryJane freely admits to having had the bags under her eyes removed. Do we allow her this one? After all, it seems pointless having pert breasts and firm buttocks if you've got eye sockets like a pair of rolled up stockings. 3. She gets enough sleepFair enough but so would I if I had millions of dollars, a personal staff and didn't have to get up for work every day. |
| 7 Ways to Tie a Scarf or Pashmina … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 08:55 AM PST If you haven't noticed (or live far South), we're in the midst of the vengeance of winter – you know, the constant whiteouts, slippery sidewalks and freezing temperatures. Scarves in cold weather climates are essential. But depending on the cut and fabric of the handy accessory, a scarf can also be utilized in a variety of ways, depending on the way it is tied. And I'm sure I've mentioned here how obsessed I am with our local street selling Pashmina lady (so cheap!). 1. Knotty
The Knotty look is best achieved with short scarves or small-squared Pashminas. Fold lengthwise, wrap around the neck and knot in front. The larger the knot, the more the fashion statement! Best utilized in not-so-bone-chilling temperatures, this option pairs perfectly with deep V-neck tops. 2. Artistic
Called artistic for its creative inspiration, this look is created with the commingling of two scarves. Intertwine the two fabric accessories and either wrap or knot above the clavicle or on top of the shoulder. I use this tying version most often (ask my Pashmina collection) because of the many varieties and combinations of styles I can design. It suppresses a bit of my overwhelming need to be fashionable during the "miserable months" too. 3. Wrapped and Belted
This look can be achieved with one scarf and a belt – or two scarves; one used itself as a belt. Simply, wrap one piece around your shoulders, with points in front, and belt it around the waist. If you use a second scarf, twist-and-tie it around the other. If you are feeling ultra-crafty, you can cut a hole in the center of the wrapped scarf (large enough for your head) — wearing almost as a poncho — then follow the same directions to complete your belted look. |
| 8 Fashion Trends Best Suited For The Young … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 08:42 AM PST I'm a great believer in not being influenced by the expectations of others when it comes to age. Just because you've celebrated a certain number of birthdays does not mean that you have to start behaving a certain way. That goes for fashion as well. However, there are certain trends that probably only young women can get away with … 1. Ultra-Mini Skirts
I remember an ad from several years ago where a shocked man announced 'That's not a skirt, that's a belt!'. Some women have great legs whatever their age, but really it's a fashion that only works if you're really young. Not because it looks any better, but because the young don't notice if they look daft. 2. Very Bright Tights
This is one of those garments that makes older women (i.e, over 22) look like they want to dress up as Minnie Mouse. Don't do it. Leave it to our younger counterparts – it's not that we lack confidence, but they have a different kind of confidence, one that says 'I think I look great but will only realise in 10 years time how wrong I was'. 3. Track Pants
Unless you're going to the gym, don't even think of wearing these in public. Even the pricier version make you look like you live in a slightly posher corner of the trailer park. Teenage girls can wear them all the time as they are still discovering their sense of style. |
| Posted: 03 Feb 2011 07:20 AM PST 2010 was a great year for movies, and I can't wait to see the Oscar nominations when they come out in a couple of weeks. Some movies were sweet and funny, others were gritty and sad… but all of them were fantastic, thought-provoking, or fun to watch. Here are my picks for the best movies of 2010. 1. InceptionI can't overestimate how riveting this movie is, how unlike any other movie I've ever seen, how remarkably well it was cast and acted. Even the score is magnificent, flawless. I loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt in this film, and I'm sure it will win Best Picture at the Oscars. Well, not sure, but ALMOST sure. 2. Despicable MeI don't like Steve Carrel… I just don't think he's funny. But I absolutely loved him in this. "Despicable Me" is very sweet, and is actually a lot like "Megamind," only in my view, a lot better. In both movies, the villain discovers he's not actually villainous at all. 3. Winter's BoneThis movie is depressing, gritty, but definitely a must-see. It tells the story of a woman who, desperate to keep her family from falling apart, tries to track down her drug-dealer father. It's beautifully acted, and at some points, feels joyless, bleaker than anything else I've ever seen. |
| 7 Things You Should Know About Facebook … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 06:56 AM PST My brother often jokes about the sentence "I have read and accept the Terms and Conditions" being the biggest lie on the Internet. I mean, is there somebody who actually reads those things? I have been asked to write them once and those were the longest few hours of my life! This little ignorance of ours can, however, turn out to be very damaging. So here's just a few things we don't know about our favorite social network… 1. Facebook is for personal use only…This piece of information is actually completely new for me! I've always thought of Facebook as an ideal place to advertise your business and I've actually listed this as one of my Facebook pros. Well, apparently, you can't use Facebook for commercial purposes. At least that's the general rule, which everybody seem to be breaking, if I may add. 2. They can use the content you postDid you know that, by settling to Facebook terms you agree that everything you post on Facebook becomes company's property? That goes for all your photos, comments, blogs, random thoughts you post as status messages… everything! And guess what? The company (Facebook) has the right to sell, publish, translate, modify, distribute that content anywhere in the world. Yes, one click of the mouse is all it takes for you to give up all your rights and help Facebook make millions out of a good photo, idea or a witty slogan you were foolish enough to publish on your Facebook profile. And don't even bother to delete your profile after reading this, it won't help because they keep your content and information even after you've deleted your profile. 3. Think twice before you file a lawsuit……because you probably won't end up being the winning side, no matter how strong your case might be. You see, if you decide to press charges against Facebook, the dispute will be handled under Delaware laws. Now, I honestly don't know much about them or law in general but this doesn't sound very promising to me. In fact, the only idea I'm getting right now is that this law is somehow "useful", if I may put it that way. |
| 9 Things to Keep Away from Your Dog … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 06:28 AM PST If you’re like me – and, of course, if you own dogs – then your pooches are like your kids. You love them unconditionally even when they go digging in the bathroom trash that you forgot to put up or decide that it’s cool to pee on anything they want to claim for their own. You also want to keep them safe from anything that could hurt them – such as these 9 things to keep away from your dog. 1. MulchYou need to be careful about what kind of mulch or fertilizer you put down, especially if your dog spends a lot of time outside. Certain mulches contain really harmful chemicals. So, if your dog rolls around in the fertilizer – or, worse, eats it – then that can cause some serious health problems. 2. People FoodsThere are certain foods that are really bad for dogs. Most pet owners know that chocolate is a no-no and that candy is awful, but there are some surprising people foods dogs shouldn’t have. Grapes and raisins both can be extremely harmful for your dog, and can actual lead to kidney failure. Onions and garlic can lean to anemia, tomatoes can cause heart problems and paralysis, and many nuts can lead to things like jaundice, lethargy, and no appetite. 3. Cat FoodDogs will eat anything. Mine especially love the cat’s food. It’s not because they don’t like their food – they pig out on that too. They just like to eat, well, anything they can get their little muzzles on. Cat food isn’t great for dogs though – and dog food is not great for cats. I always know when one animal has gotten into food meant for the other species, because … they leave evidence on the floor. |
| 7 Lessons to Learn from Losing your Job … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 06:21 AM PST I'm sure not many people sit around and wonder what they will do if they ever lose their job. It's not something that most people plan on happening. I've thought of 7 lessons to learn from losing your job, but of course these don't pertain to all types of employment. I tried to be as generic as possible, in order to cover most occupations. 7. Problems are opportunities in disguiseI've found that opportunities can often come from something bad that has happened. Losing a job can sometimes open the door to a bigger and better job. Sometimes there is an opportunity that is the result of a job loss. You just never know what might happen and there actually might be something important that you otherwise would have missed out on. 6. It’s always good to have a resume readyHaving a current resume on hand is usually common with people who are job hunting. Very rarely do people who are currently employed maintain their resume. I've made it a habit to jot down changes from year to year, just to make sure to keep my resume as accurate as possible. This technique also helps me remember what changes have been made in the past year, which is easier than trying to remember what happened 5 years ago. 5. It’s important to stay optimisticI try to remain optimistic with all aspects of life. It's hard at times, especially when I encounter pessimism from loved ones. Losing a job is something that is rather difficult to be optimistic about. Try to look on the bright side. See if you can find at least one thing to be optimistic about and go from there. Being optimistic tends to open your eyes to more positive things and one thing can easily lead to another. |
| 7 Tips on Waking Up Feeling Rested … Posted: 03 Feb 2011 06:08 AM PST Right here, I have 7 tips on waking up feeling rested. By using these tips, every morning, unless I am sick, I wake up with that wonderful rested feeling. I am actually happy to see the morning, every morning and you can too – even if you are not a morning person. Let me get started on giving you those 7 tips right now – before it's bedtime. 7. Avoid Caffeine the Night BeforeCaffeine has been proven to disturb your sleep and make it hard for you to fall asleep at night. It can upset your intestines and cause you to constantly wake up and have a light sleep. 6. Get Enough SleepIt is important that you get enough sleep each night if you are looking to wake up feeling rested. On average, you should get around eight hours of sleep each night. So, make sure you go to bed on time and don't stay up all night partying or you will not be able to wake up feeling rested like you want. 5. Being Stress FreeI have found that when I am under stress, it is difficult to wake up in the morning. I am sure some of you can relate to this feeling. Therefore, you need to find a way to eliminate that stress from your life. Besides, stress is not good on your health. |
| Posted: 02 Feb 2011 10:57 PM PST I came across Flickr.com on accident one day. I was amazed at all it had to offer! I think it's one of the best photo sites around. Below, I've listed 7 reasons I like Flickr.com. If you've ever used this magnificent website, then you might have similar reasons for 7. It's easy to connect with other accounts
Photo Credit: pshab Facebook is a popular social networking site that just about everyone has an account with. Photos on Flickr can be connected to your personal Facebook account, as well as your Twitter account. You can even pass photos between Flickr and a blogging service you use. Yahoo updates are also available through Flickr.com. 6. There is the ability to make more than simply photographs from pictures
Photo Credit: fd Posters, photo books and cards, calendars, wrapped canvas, metallic prints, mugs, tee-shirts, coasters, magnets, mousepads, and collages. This is the best way to make presents out of your photos. I can't think of a more personal gift to give someone. I actually made a calendar with a bunch of my photos and it was so easy! 5. There are plenty of people to help name the object you took a picture of
Photo Credit: beadersdelight I find this feature extremely helpful with nature photos. Sure, I can always spend hours perusing the net for the name of a specific plant or bird that I recently snapped a picture of. But, it's so much easier to simply ask others if they might happen to know the name of the particular creature or foliage I've taken a snap shot of. |
| 10 Steps for the best possible savings on everything … Posted: 02 Feb 2011 12:09 PM PST Sadly, here in the United States of America, more money is wasted than is put to good use. We’ve become a nation that easily spends, but has a hard time saving. And in reality, we spend more than we’ve actually made. But saving money is becoming more and more important to the everyday man and woman. Want some ways to save that hard-earned penny? Read on! 1. Grocery Shop In Your Cabinets
I found a tip online that said that this one lady and her husband make it a point that one week out of every month, they won’t go to the grocery store, but rather eat whatever they can find in the pantry. This not only saves them a week of grocery money, but it also helps them keep from wasting so much food! Pretty nifty, huh? 2. Save On Dryer Time
One tip I’ve found is this: Throw your clothes into the dryer only for about 10-15 minutes (long enough to start the drying process) and then take them out and hang them up on your shower curtain rod. This not only saves on your power bill, but lengthens the life of your clothes as well! 3. Dryer Ball
No more dryer sheets with this tip! Wad up a ball of aluminum foil and use it over and over again in your dryer to prevent static electricity build-up in your clothes! How cool is that? |
