| 8 Tips For Adjusting To Retirement … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 12:06 PM PST Retirement may be a long way off for most of us, but one thing is for sure – it is a major change in your life, even if you can choose the timing. After having the structure of a work environment for so many years, suddenly you are faced with what can be similar to unemployment. So for any readers who are getting closer to collecting their pension, or who have parents in that position, here are some tips to help ease the transition. 1. Financial PlanningRetirement is much easier if you have made proper financial provision for it. Obviously, the earlier you start the better, but even when close to retirement there are things that can be done to boost your income. Look at getting a better rate for your savings, downsize your home, or think about continuing working in another job. 2. HobbiesAfter decades of working full-time, being free to do what you want can seem great – in principle. But when it comes to filling your day, suddenly there seems an awful lot of day to fill! So if you're the kind of person who likes to keep active, find lots of activities to do, and take up new activities. 3. Your LifeWhen you retire, family members can see it as a great opportunity – for you to provide plenty of free childcare. It's your life, though, so if you want to spend it enjoying yourself, then don't be pushed into acting as a full-time childminder for your grandchildren. |

| 7 Reasons Women are Attracted to Older Men … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 11:23 AM PST Being married to a man much older than myself, I think I have a good idea for at least 7 reasons women are attracted to older men. I tried to cover just 7, but there are quite a few more reasons that I prefer older men to men my own age as well as those younger than I. I've definitely never been attracted to guys younger than myself and this might be because I tend to associate young men with my own kids. It'd be like dating a friend of my son's! I don't know about you, but that just freaks me out. Anyway, here's the list. 7. They know how to treat a womanI'm not just talking about being polite, holding the car door open, waiting by the door and allowing a woman to enter the room first, or anything regarded as being chivalrous. Those are all fantastic and I'm thrilled that my husband still does these things. I actually like it when a man holds the door open for me. The other part to this reason involves the bedroom. By the time guys reach middle age, they know a thing or two about how to treat a woman just the way she wants to be treated in bed. 6. They are more stable in many areasMarrying an older man, I was certain that he'd been through enough crud in his life that he was going to be willing to make our marriage work. So far, I've been right. Older men are stable when it comes to having lasting relationships, being able to manage finances accurately, they are willing to quit living in the past, they are more forgiving, and they tend to be more mentally stable too. 5. They have more confidenceMy husband, as well as most the men in his age group, is past the point of caring what others think. He isn't rude or anything like that, but he doesn't do things just to please others. He dresses how he wants and is confident that his attire is perfectly acceptable. I've noticed that older men also are more apt to strike up a conversation with a woman of any age. They appear to be past the point in their life where fear or intimidation stopped them in their tracks. I really like this aspect of older men. |
| 7 Marketing Tricks Companies Use to Get You To Buy the Products … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:56 AM PST The more you spend, the more you feel the need to spend but, who could ever resist the urge, especially when there are many magical products out there. They will either make you beautiful or slim, they are a great bargain and you'll probably end up paying more than they are worth, regardless of how good and genuine that special offer looks. Interested to know more about the ways companies manipulate the minds of their consumers? Well, keep reading because this post is about that! 1. Special offersYou snooze – you lose! When a certain item is made available for a limited period of time or in limited quantities, you won't think too much before buying simply because you feel like the clock is ticking. I've bothered my fiancé to take advantage of one "special offer" and get an exercise machine. Thank God he didn't do it because we actually found the same machine in a store, for a regular price that was 50% lower than the telemarketing company's "special price" ! 2. AnchoringAnchoring is a very old, reliable tactics that's definitely going to get the product sold within a month or so. The trick is to overprice the item and then put it on sale, with the price still well over the one you'd normally pay. If you liked this item when it was $200, you'll definitely rush to buy it once its price drops to $100, regardless of the fact that the item might not be worth that money. It's a great deal…or, it certainly seems like it! 3. Percentage goes to charityYes, a percentage of profit the company has made selling those products does go to charity, but which percentage are we talking about here? Is it 10%? Fifty percent? A measly three percent? I definitely don't approve of this trick, especially when "charity" or "philanthropy" is used to sell over priced merchandise of low quality. Skip the middle man and his crappy products, buy the product you want and donate money to charity directly! |
| 7 Ways To Brighten Your House With Natural Lighting … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:51 AM PST A bright room is a cheerful room. As I have come to find, it does not take a lot of time, effort or money to brighten every room of your house. The best way to brighten a room is by using natural lighting. Here are some easy and effective ways to brighten your house with natural lighting. 1. Positioning of Windows
Photo Credit: [DOUBLEViSiON.] While this is perhaps the one of the more expensive ways to brighten your house with natural lighting, it is also the most effective one. If you happen to have a window on the side of the house that gets the maximum sunlight, then that's great. If not, you may want to consider adding one. It is a one-time effort from which you stand to benefit significantly. 2. Right Window Treatment
Photo Credit: Kempt It is quite pointless to have a window in the right place, if it is going to be heavily draped with thick curtains and sunlight preventing window treatments. Choose the right window treatment to maximize the use of sunlight. 3. Keep Windows Clean
Photo Credit: Crystal Window Cleaning While this is one of the most obvious ways to brighten your house with natural lighting, it is also one of the most overlooked. Ensure that your windows are always sparkling clean and that there is never a layer of dust and grit on it. |
| Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:51 AM PST In this day and age, women come in all different shapes and ages. Just because you are overweight does not mean you cannot be hot and just because you are overweight does not mean you cannot be hot. Just because you are old does not mean you can't be hot. If you get things right and get everything in order, you can be a hot woman darn it! You just have to know what to do. I am going to give you 7 tips on being a hot woman … 7. The Right AttitudeIf you want to be a hot woman, then you need to have the right attitude. You can't be grumpy as if you are always on your period and stop using that as an excuse to bite someone's head off. Hot women have to have nice, gentle attitudes. For example, a really good looking woman with a sour attitude may not be as hot to a guy as the moderate looking woman with a sweet attitude. 6. Have StyleIt is important that you develop a style of your own. Sure, it is okay to learn from idols, models and celebrities, but eventually, you need to come up with a style that is going to work out for you. When you find a style that suits you, apply it to everything – your clothing, your hair, makeup and accessories. 5. DetailYou should never wear cheap or dirty underwear just because you do not think anyone is going to see it. You should not have a messy purse or skip out on oral hygiene, regular showers and hair care. |
| 7 Reasons to Love High-Waisted Skirts … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:49 AM PST They've been back for a while and opinion is still divided. I personally adore the 21st century take on the high-waisted skirt, but I know there are girls out there convinced this look guarantees them a three-foot long butt. Ladies, it's not true! The classic higher waistline can be super versatile and flattering, and to prove it I've compiled a list of 7 reasons to fall in love with it … 1. Diver-skirt-yThe high-waisted skirt comes in a variety of designs from flirty and flared to no nonsense pencil cuts, sexy secretary style. Trust me girls, there's one out there to suit you, and when you find it, you'll never want to take it off. Keep trying them on until you find that one magical skirt… then buy it in every colour. 2. The SilhouetteWhichever cut you go for, the high-waisted skirt emphasises a stunning feminine shape. So flaunt your curves! If you have a boyish figure with no natural curves, create an hourglass illusion by pairing your skirt with a wide belt and a looser tank top of tee. 3. Pick 'n MixVersatility is the key benefit of any skirt, and higher waisted cuts are no exception. Pair yours with a different top everyday to create a whole range of looks for a fraction of the price! All you poor student stylistas out there this is your answer. |
| Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:34 AM PST There are some signs that the guy you are dating might cheat on you. You just have to learn how to recognize those signs. Right now, I am going to give you 7 signs he might cheat … 7. He Knows a Lot of Girls and Makes Friends with Them with No ProblemThis is the type of guy that knows almost every girl within a sixty mile radius. If he doesn't know them, then he will make sure he does. Now, being a lady's man does really mean that he is going to be a cheater, but if you want to deal with the constant competition, then that is up to you. 6. He Thinks You're a CheaterPerhaps this is because he thinks you are being like him. He knows just how easy it is to cheat. 5. He's SecretiveI'm all for being a bit mysterious, but when he's really secretive over certain things, such as his past, then this could be a sign he is a cheater. Of course, you shouldn't base whether or not he is a cheater on something I have said, because maybe he's different and just naturally does these things. |
| 9 Placebo Songs That Do Me In … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:33 AM PST Placebo is my number one favorite band. Their songs are so deeply meaningful to me that it’s not uncommon for me to have a physical reaction to them: butterflies in my stomach, a speeding pulse rate, an ache in the heart. In the spirit of opening myself up and sharing the goodness, I want to share with you 9 Placebo songs that just do me in. 1. Running Up that HillI actually heard Placebo’s version of this cover on an episode of Bones – the episode where Ryan O’Neal, as her dad, immolates that guy. It was the perfect song for that scene, I think, and Brian Molko’s voice sent chills all through me. To this day I can listen to that one song nonstop for hours at a time. It’s darker than the original version, full of much darker intentions – and I love that about it. 2. Post BlueWarning, this song has pretty explicit lyrics – but that’s why I like it. From the Meds album, which is one of my favorites, this song is so raw and sensual that it’s nearly animalistic. Brian’s voice here is just … wow. That’s really all I can safely say. Wow, wow, wow. 3. Follow the Cops Back Home"Let’s spend the night in Jimmy Choo’s, I’ll give you coats and cheap shampoo." While not the most meaningful lyrics in the song, these are an indication of why I like it so much. A kind of despairing humor mixes in with plain despair; this song is plaintive and raw as well, a trend on Meds. |
| 7 Types of Flowers to Pick for a Winter Wedding … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:12 AM PST Winter weddings are absolutely gorgeous, and they can look just so smart. One of the most important things to consider when you have a wedding in the winter, though, are what flowers are either in season or are at least readily available – and if they will look good. Reds and white and pinks are excellent colors for winter services, especially if you’re going for a dramatic look. I found 7 types of flowers to pick for a winter wedding that will knock your socks off! 1. Amaryllis
Photo Credit: Barbara Tempel Amaryllis flowers are really gorgeous. They are hardy little things, but the blossoms look delicate and feminine and somehow magical, for all of that. There is a Candy Cane amaryllis, in particular, that would be beautiful for a winter wedding. Like the name implies, the petals are white with stripes of red, although depending, the stripes can look more pink. Either way, the blossoms are beautiful. So are the blossoms on bright red amaryllis blossoms. 2. Orchids
Photo Credit: Dream Designs Florist Orchids are my very favorite flowers and they make a beautiful touch to any wedding, especially one taking place in winter. There are gorgeous blue orchids, Dendrobiums, in particular, that make wonderful choices. They have hints of purple in the petals as well. White orchids are also a good choice, but you can actually find orchids in any color to suit your theme. 3. Lilies
Lilies are another great choice, and because there are so many, in a variety of colors, the possibilities are endless. There are miniature Calla lilies, for example, in a dark wine shade with purple undertones. There are also Calla lilies in a black/burgundy shade that, rather than looking morbid, makes a really dramatic touch If you want something more delicate, check out Casa Blanca Oriental Lilies, which are primarily white but have lovely dark red stamens. |
| 7 Things from a Can/Bag That Taste Better Than the Real Deal … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 09:44 AM PST I am a processed food junkie, and shoot me if I know how did I ever manage to go from anorexic to loving everything that has the expiration date printed on it? Now, my past aside, let me tell you which 7 pre-packed things I especially love and why… 1. Mashed potatoes
I don't know about you but I totally love the taste of instant mashed potatoes. It doesn't taste like the home made one, that's for sure, but my sister and I are completely crazy about that specific smell and taste. Did I mention the word "taste" too many times? Well it does taste great, there's nothing I can do about it. Plus, it's ready in just 5 minutes! 2. Tuna fish pate
I love fish but I hate all those little bones and I especially hate that overly fishy smell! Now, I know that sounds strange coming from a person that has tried more sea creatures than the great white shark, but you'll have to agree that some fish and fish products do smell less "fishy" than the others. That's especially true for home made fish pate… at least for the ones I had the misfortune to taste. 3. Canned peas
I always have a can of pre-cooked peas in the house because that's the tastiest, easiest to mix in a salad thing ever. How do they manage to cook it and make it so delicious without any sauce? I just can't do that with frozen peas and I'm really not a bad cook! I'm going to tell you a little secret, but don't think I'm weird, please. I like to open a can of peas, take a spoon and dig in. No plate, no bread, no mayo or dressing of any kind. Just peas. Is that weird? |

| Posted: 21 Feb 2011 09:15 AM PST Most likely we all have different views of what constitutes a great work perk. Animal lovers might consider the ability to bring their dog to work with them as a work perk. High powered executives are often rewarded with perks in the form of monetary bonuses. Perks vary widely according to accepted practices in different industries. The list below reflects this author's idea of the 7 best work perks possible. 1. DiscountsEspecially in the retail sale industry, employees are often given a purchase discount. The amount of the discount can be anywhere from 10% to a whopping 40% off retail prices. This is a rather traditional work perk that has been around for years, and it’s one of my favorites! 2. Health BenefitsIn the past most large employers and many smaller ones paid for health coverage for their employees and offered discounted coverage for their family members. Today this is a perk that is becoming rarer due to tightening belts and lowering business expenses. It continues to be one of the most sought after work perks. 3. Paid VacationThe best jobs still offer paid vacations to employees. Like health benefits, paid vacation perks are becoming a rare commodity as employers strive to lower their business costs. |
| 7 Things You Need to Play Roller Derby … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 09:02 AM PST I'm not yet even a rookie. If I had the courage to join three-four years ago when I first heard of my local league, I would be experiencing more of the competitive side of roller derby (read: bouting) than as a "fresh meat" skater on the sidelines. Sure, my time will come… But in the meantime, I can share with you a few things I've learned along the way. In order to play roller derby, you will need: 1. Skates (and little skating ability)This is the first– and most expensive – piece of gear you will need to play. If you are interested in roller derby, but haven't been on skates in some time, check out local rinks with rental availability. Attend a few open sessions to get used to being on skates and make sure you LIKE to skate before investing in your own pair. When you do make your initial purchase, start with a beginner package that will get you through try-outs and your first year of skating. If you decide to commit long-term to the sport, you will need to upgrade all of your equipment and frequently replace items. 2. The Right GearAside from skates, the sport requires you to wear a helmet, knee and elbow pads and wrist guards – that includes practices. You will also need a mouthguard (the boil-and-set pieces from most sports stores are good). All of these items protect you and your body from injury. Once you learn how to fall properly, you won't ever skate without your equipment. 3. Time & MoneyObviously, these are two separate items, but partners-in-crime in roller derby, if you will. You will be expected to attend regular weekly practices, bouts and scrimmages and volunteer for events or league positions. And since all leagues are self-run and promoted by its participants, everyone needs to chip in individually and as a team – both with their time and money. Also, any required gear, uniforms, travel, insurance or rink costs are paid out of the pockets of the skaters. |
| 34 Lessons and Truths You Need to Know … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 08:53 AM PST Life is our greatest teacher and there are many things we can learn from it. Most lessons are hard. But once you learn and accept them, they have the power to make life a wonderful experience. Unlike lessons in school, these life lessons and truths are universal. They transcend time, race, and culture. No matter what your status in society is, they are applicable and useful in your life. Take time to read about 34 of these life lessons and truths. 1. Life is hardNo one ever said that life is going to be easy and painless. If you learn to accept this truth, the challenges won't come as such big surprises and you can work on finding solutions quicker. 2. The world doesn't owe you anythingThe world doesn't owe you anything; nothing at all. It is up to you to create the life you want and to acquire the things you deem important. Quit waiting for a handout and do something! 3. You can't win big if you don't riskI think the perfect example of how this truth works is a game show. If players don't take risks, they may lose their chances of winning the jackpot. The same thing goes for real life. If you are not willing to risk, then you may lose out on something even greater. |
| 9 Amazing Restaurants to Visit in Louisville, KY … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 08:46 AM PST Most folks will probably be surprised to hear that Louisville, KY is a pretty interesting place. I mean any city that adopts the motto "Keep Louisville Weird" is bound to be. Having lived here for the last four years, I've really been able to take that it firsthand, and let me tell you there are some interesting and delicious places The Ville. Here's my top shelf picks for Louisville, KY eateries. 9. Taco BellThis probably undermines my list right away, but if this is a list of my favorites places to eat, no matter where I am Taco Bell is on it. I don't care that they've been accused of terrible and disgusting things lately, I still love me some Taco Bell. The number seven, with a soft taco with no lettuce, topped off with a few sides of jalapeno sauce, and a Mountain Dew is always something to get excited about. 8. Spinelli's PizzaThis is east coast sliced pizza, and to be honest, that's not my favorite type, but I've included Spinelli's because for what it lacks in pie, it more than makes up for with character. Inside the main room covered in graffiti is a classic car converted into three different booths to sit in. The second dining room used to be a tattoo parlor… 7. Chuy'sThis place is also not unique to Louisville, but it's so amazingly delicious that I had to include it. With all its bright colors and crazy decor this place screams spring break to me. The Mexican food is amazing to me. For some reason Elvis is a big deal at this place and to me the Elvis Fried Chicken is the best thing on the menu. It's a large fried chicken breast covered in queso with Chuy's amazing rice. Also, they make all their tortillas on site so they are especially good. |
| 7 Funniest Television Shows of All Time … Posted: 21 Feb 2011 05:59 AM PST I'm thankful for the many television shows that have made me laugh over the years. Whenever I had a particularly rough day, it was always good to have something funny to look forward to. In my opinion, the following list is of the 7 funniest television shows of all times. I know there will be plenty more in the future as new material is written for TV shows. If you haven't gotten a chance to see some of the shows mentioned below, they are definitely worth checking out. 7. ScrubsI was never a fan of doctor shows, but this one involves the humors side of the medical field. The episodes follow a group of coworkers at a hospital who are also friends. Most of them are working on becoming full-fledged doctors. This group of interns interacts with on another and each episode is narrated by one of the main interns in the show. This same intern is taunted by the head doctor as well as by the janitor. 6. That 70s ShowLasting from 1998 to 2006, That 70s Show was a television series that revolved around a group of teenagers in Wisconsin during the 1970s. The 'parents' of some of the teens have parts in various episodes as well, but the series is mainly about the group of friends and how they deal with being teenagers as well as other aspects popular during the 1970s. This is the show that Ashton Kutcher got his start on. |
| Posted: 20 Feb 2011 11:33 PM PST While I heartily disapprove of wearing pajama pants in public (they look so sloppy!) I am a big fan of wearing nice lounge pants in the house. They're stylish (in case friends stop by unannounced) and are, of course, supremely comfortable without looking lazy. I'm always on the lookout for lush lounge pants, and I've found so many lately that I love! Here are 8 comfortable lounge pants… 1. Aerocentaria Lounge Pants
 2. Time Will Tell Lounge Pants
 3. Meringue Lounge Pants

You might want to avoid that and treat running injuries ASAP. 2. Letting Your Hair Color Fade AwayWhether you paid a lot to have your hair dyed or you DIYed it, letting the color fade is surely not something you’ll want. Read up on the things you need to avoid to maintain the color of your mane. 3. Inviting Insects to Your GardenLet’s face it: creepy-crawlies in the garden are unsightly. After the link, you will know interesting ways to get rid of them. Read up and keep your garden pretty! 4. The Girlfriend Who Secretly Wishes to Destroy YouAKA: The Frenemy. High school or college is stressful enough. Having this type of “friend” in your life will simply make your days even more difficult. Ditch her and find true friends! 5. A Chance Encounter with MonstersI don’t need to remind myself to avoid these because I scare quite easily. For those who may be a tad curious, brush up on monsters you need to run away from, not inspect. We all need a set of guidelines on just about any aspect of our lives. If you have some ideas, we’d love to hear about them! Top Photo Credit: yopuz |
