| Posted: 24 Feb 2011 11:25 AM PST Black Swan is bringing ballet back into the forefront of the arts for the masses, but I’ve been crazy about it for years. It stems from wanting to be a ballerina when I was a tiny little thing, long before I discovered you need to have balance and be graceful. The first ballet I ever say was at the Stanley in Utica, New York; it was a ballet version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and although Shakespeare is based on language, the performance was gorgeous. Here are 7 reasons I love the ballet – although I could easily list two dozen! 1. The CostumesThe costumes in a professional ballet are absolutely breathtaking. It doesn’t matter what ballet it is, whether it’s Swan Lake (just take a look at what Natalie Portman sported, after all) or The Nutcracker. The costumes are decadent and stylish and gorgeous, and their dramatic factor helps make the show absolutely incredible. 2. The MusicMusic is, of course, hugely important in the ballet, and it is as beautiful as you would thus imagine. The music in the ballet for Faust tells the story along with the dancers, so you feel like you are making a Faustian pact yourself. The music for The Sleeping Beauty, from the Lilac Fairy to Puss in Boots to Rose Adagio, makes you think of fairy tales and happy endings. It’s soaring and soul searing and amazing. 3. The DecadenceBallets are decadent performances, on par with the opera. Everything is rich, opulent, and over the top, and once you see one, you understand why and wouldn’t ever have it any other way. It’s part of the experience, and really, it makes it better. It helps bring you into the story. |
| 7 Reasons to Use At Home Whitening Kits … Posted: 24 Feb 2011 11:16 AM PST I've used a couple of different teeth whitening kits over the years and they really do make a difference. It would probably help if I wasn't such an avid coffee drinker too. I'm not willing to give up my coffee though! Read the reviews of a few different kinds before making your decision on which kit to choose. There are actually many advantages to whitening your own teeth. Here are 7 reasons to use at home whitening kits. 7. They are excellent for making your teeth beautifulWho doesn't want whiter teeth? I can't think of anyone who said they prefer to make their teeth as yellow as possible. I personally like my teeth to be bright and white. I've seen some bleach jobs that people have had done at the dentist and they actually make the teeth look very unnatural. I find the home kits create a nice shade of white that blends in nicely. 6. Whiter teeth give people a reason to smile moreI smile a lot more often when I know my teeth look nice. You know how you tend to hide your smile when you think there might be something stuck in your teeth? Well, I'm the same way when I know my teeth are a bit too yellow for my taste. This is usually when I purchase a home teeth whitening kit and boost my self-esteem! 5. There's no pressure in trying to make an appointment with the dentistI don't know about you, but trying to work in a doctor's appointment of any kind is near to impossible. I can see needing to make arrangements to have a cavity fixed, but I'm not willing to give up my entire day to get my teeth lightened up when I can do it at home. |
| Posted: 24 Feb 2011 11:10 AM PST I don't know about you, but I'm a terrible gift giver. It's not that I don't love to shower my loved ones with gifts and other regalia; it's just that I'm really uncreative. Especially when it comes to women – there is just so much out there, it's hard to choose. But I've found that jewelry is always a great and appreciated gift. Here are a few ideas that make for great gifts. 1. Anything Diamond
 2. Vintage
 3. Bracelets and Charms

| 7 White Lies and Why People Use Them … Posted: 24 Feb 2011 11:04 AM PST Finding out that a person we love and trust has lied to us is a devastating feeling I wish none of you will ever have a chance to experience. Is telling white lies really that much easier? Don't they understand that everything comes out in the open sooner or later? The reasons for which people opt for lies are numerous and often very complex, which, of course, isn't a good excuse or a reason to bury yourself in lies. So, here's a list of some, most common reasons for white lies: 1. White lies in you CVListing the languages you can't speak seems like a white lie you can easily get away with. After all, your job interview certainly won't presume a quiz on your knowledge of Chinese. But what if it does? Qualified individuals are a valuable asset so, if you're really as qualified as your CV states, props to you. If you aren't, be prepared to be embarrassed sooner or later. Examiners know people often lie in their CVs so you can expect a few questions regarding the skills you've listed. 2. I'm almost there/ I'll be ready in 10 minutesLOL! Talking about white lies, these are the ones I often used. My fiancé is the one that has managed to teach me "not to say things I know I can't do" because, no matter how good "I'm almost ready" sounds, it often leads to a big disappointment because we are late again… and it's my fault! If you know you can't make it on time or it just takes you a lot of time to get ready, say so, before final plans are made. If you call the person you are meeting with in 7 and ask to postpone the 9 o'clock meeting to 9:30, no harm is done. However, if you lie and put a person in the situation where he/she has no other option but to wait for you, those 30 minutes mean a lot. Repeat this white lie a few times and nobody will feel like you could be trusted to come on time again. This white lie sounds nice, but leaves a bad aftertaste! |
| Posted: 24 Feb 2011 11:00 AM PST I love ties. I have quite an extensive collection, but they’re femme cut ties. Those are great, but you know what? Guys have better looking ties. True story. I realized this while Christmas shopping at JC Penney’s, where they had a collection of really bright, boldly colored ties with a metallic sheen. They were beautiful. It was a revelation. So forget it, I’m shopping menswear now – and to that end, these are 7 of the coolest ties I have ever seen. 1. Ermenegildo Zegna Quindici Print Silk Tie
 2. 1901 Woven Silk Tie: Plaid
 3. HUGO Skinny Silk Tie

| 10 Notorious British Murderers … Posted: 24 Feb 2011 10:54 AM PST In the UK we don't have armed police except for special units and we no longer have the death penalty (since 1969) so although we do experience violent crime, when serial killers come to justice they are sentenced to life imprisonment. Multiple murders are headline news for years in the UK. From the time the murders happen or are discovered and, for the entire lifetime of the murderer whilst imprisoned because of course, without a death row, there are always petitions for parole etc. Here are some details of the people who have perpetrated some of the most notorious crimes in UK history and there aren't actually that many to choose from. 1. Jack The RipperUndoubtedly, Jack the Ripper wasn't the first serial killer but he was the first one to gain national and international notoriety. He haunted the streets of Whitechapel in East London in 1888 surgically removing juicy bits of prostitutes before ripping their throats apart. The story has spawned a hundred legends including one that Jack was a member of the British Royal Family. Jack the Ripper was never caught and the crimes remain a mystery. 2. Fred and Rosemary WestOver twenty years up to 1987, this married couple tortured, raped and murdered at least 12 young women in Gloucester (SW England) including one of Fred's daughters. They were finally caught in 1994. Fred filmed himself raping 2 of his other daughters and 1 of them summoned up the courage to tell the police in 1992 but it took 2 years to investigate and bring The Wests to justice. A film is planned for this story. 3. Jeremy BamberThis charming man (not!) is serving life imprisonment for the murder of 5 members of his adoptive family August 7 1985 (father, mother, sister, 2 nephews). The Times newspaper at the time wrote the case had all the ingredients of a classic whodunit: a massacre in the English countryside, overbearing parents, an unstable daughter, a scheming son, a jilted girlfriend, and bungling police. Original suspicion fell on his sister who was undergoing treatment for schizophrenia. Bamber inadvertently gave himself away to a girlfriend who informed the police. |
| 7 Crucial Tips on Telephone Etiquette … Posted: 24 Feb 2011 10:54 AM PST There is no doubt that telephones are here to stay. It is true that social networking sites have made it easier to communicate without having to talk to people, but nothing replaces the importance of a conversation, whether business or personal. Here are some crucial tips on telephone etiquette that will hold you in good stead. 1. Check the number before you dialPerhaps the most obvious of all tips on telephone etiquette, it is nonetheless the most overlooked one. Checking the number before you dial will save you time and money and will prevent an uninvolved person from being disturbed. 2. Time of the callUnless it is an emergency or you are on especially on close terms with the person you are calling, be sure to call during reasonable hours. Be considerate of the person you are calling and avoid calling too early in the morning, too late at night, during mealtimes or during weekends and holidays. For business calls, call only during working hours. 3. Be niceThis is one of the best tips on telephone etiquette. Never be too busy to be nice to the person on the other side of the line, whether you are making the call or being called. Use appropriate greetings and farewells at the beginning and end of the call. |
| Posted: 24 Feb 2011 10:40 AM PST Suicide … it is not pretty thing. It's sad. It's something that many (TOO MANY) humans do every day – the amount of people who attempt suicide each day is horrifying. It's sad to think just how many out there feel that they have to kill themselves to make life better. Below, I am going to give you 7 facts on suicide … 7. Suicide RateDuring the last couple of decades, the suicide rate in young people has dramatically increased. During the year 1996, suicide was listed as being the 3rd leading cause of death for those who were between the ages of fifteen and twenty four. 6. Attempted SuicideIt is estimated that there is an 8-25 attempted suicides to one completion. This ration is higher in the young people and women. It is lower in the elderly and men. 5. Expressions of DistressMost of the suicide attempts are expressions of distress that should be addressed – it is not a bid for attention. Any individual that is suicidal or who you think is suicidal should never be left alone. They need mental health treatment right away. |
| 7 Most Infamous Criminals in History … Posted: 24 Feb 2011 10:36 AM PST There are a number of famous people noted in the history books, but not all are infamous as well. Each of the 7 most infamous criminals in history listed below have gained their bad reputation in numerous ways. Not all are murderers, some are swindlers or conspirators, yet every one of them has earned a place on this list. 7. Jim BakkerJim and his wife Tammy Faye hosted an evangelical Christian program that was televised. There was a sex scandal that caused him to resign from his position as a minister and then proof of accounting fraud began to appear. He was imprisoned, divorced from Tammy Faye, and pretty much ruined his career. 6. Mary SurrattSurratt was the first woman to be executed in the US by the federal government. She was hanged after being found guilty in conspiring to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. Apparently she'd been seen talking multiple times to Lewis Powell, who had tried to assassinate the Secretary of State previously. The evidence that landed her on trial were a photo of John Wilkes Booth found in her home and some bullet molds on her dresser top. 5. Charles BowlesHe's better known by his alias which was Black Bart. After he robbed a couple of stagecoaches he left a poetic message behind. It was these messages that Bowles is most noted for. He was considered to be a gentleman bandit and found operating around the southern part of Oregon and Northern California during the 1870s and 80s. You don't usually hear the words 'sophisticated' and 'robber' in the same sentence and definitely not in reference to the same person. |
| Posted: 24 Feb 2011 10:04 AM PST As I'm sure you know girls, the colder weather wreaks havoc with our skin, and while many of us go to a lot of trouble to ensure our faces and bodies are well moisturised, we tend to forget that our lips need special attention too. Here are 7 steps to get your pout into tip top condition … 1. Exfoliate and StimulateDryness is the number one problem we experience with our lips. Skin tends to accumulate and become flaky, and that, ladies, is not attractive. Buy yourself an ordinary soft bristled tooth brush and give your lips a gentle brush every morning. This removes dry skin, stimulates circulation and will have your kisser looking great in no time. Remember to apply a nourishing balm when you're done. 2. Hydrate Hydrate HydrateAs with so many other beauty problems, dry skin around the mouth is often linked with dehydration. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your lips looking lush. 3. Supplements for SupplenessAs with ordinary dry skin, your lips will benefit from an increase in the correct vitamins and minerals. Omega 3 is a great option and Vitamin A, taken in carefully regulated doses will also help – be sure to ask your pharmacist about this one ladies, as too much will really dry your skin out. |

| 8 Things to Look for in a Great Boss … Posted: 24 Feb 2011 09:49 AM PST I’m picky when I look for a new job, I admit it. Working from home makes no difference, I still need a boss with whom I can communicate. And I have been pretty much the luckiest girl in life in that regard, because I have incredible bosses who are fair, fun to talk to, informative, and always fair. If you want to be lucky in your professional life too, check out these 8 things to look for in a great boss! 1. AppreciationA good boss always appreciates his or her employees. A good boss listens to suggestions and ideas, takes problems seriously, and appreciates the work that you do. You don’t get that feeling of impatience or expectation, i.e., "I’m not going to praise you doing a fantastic job on this product, it’s the least I expect," or something like that. 2. Well BalancedIt’s great when you can be friends with your boss, but he or she also needs to keep up a professional balance. Being your friend is great but it should never interfere with his or her ability as a leader, and it’s not a good idea to step over the line. Now, this means different things to different people. I love randomly emailing my boss, or receiving random emails – but at the same time I know that I shouldn’t take advantage of that, and your boss shouldn’t either. So, text messages and emails are awesome; texts and emails during dinner are not (ahem, this applies to the Better Half’s boss, by the way). 3. Realistic ExpectationsA good boss needs to have realistic expectations of his or her employees in any given expectations. Newcomers should not be expected to know everything right out of the gate, for example, and you can’t be expected to master a new system of doing things in five minutes. A good boss also realizes that you can only handle so much pressure before the proverbial pot boils over. |
| 8 Complaints Men Have About Dating Women … Posted: 24 Feb 2011 09:48 AM PST I have 8 guy friends that I talked to (I used some of my husband’s friends) in order to get 8 complaints men have about dating women. For the sake of them, I am not going to include their names anywhere in here. This blog is the real thing – from real people. I am going to give you 8 complaints men have about dating women … 8. Very LoudPhoto Credit: Bruce Charles "When I took the girl out on our first date, I noticed something in her that I did not like. I did not like how she was very loud. This took away from her sex appeal. She had a loud, booming voice, which took away the femininity. She reminded me of some of my loud guy friends." 7. Woman is Too BossyPhoto Credit: charamelody "I hate when a woman acts as if she owns me. I remember my second girlfriend. I regretted her moving in with me. The moment she moved in with me, even though I was paying the bills, it was as if it were her house. She even took away my video games as if I am some kid." 6. Menstrual CyclePhoto Credit: catklein "There we were, sitting there in the middle of our dinner when she started talking about her menstrual cycle! Okay, am I the only guy that found this one a bit odd? I am all for being open with one another, but do I really need to hear about the menstrual cycle as I am eating?" |
| Top 8 Essential Batman Stories … Posted: 24 Feb 2011 08:55 AM PST Batman has been crusading on the streets and rooftops of Gotham City via the funny pages of DC Comics for more than 70 years. In that time he has seen everything from cataclysmic earthquakes to clown princes of crime to the other side of the universe. So, if you want to impress your boyfriend with some nerd knowledge, here are 8 essential Batman stories for best getting to know The Dark Knight. 8. Batman: Mask of the PhantasmBatman: The Animated Series holds a special place in every Batman fans heart. This animated feature happened to be the first, and best, of several made from the shows legendary run. In it we see Bruce Wayne's rise to Batman and many of the techniques and experiences he used to perfect his crusade. 7. The Dark Knight Returns – by Frank Miller and Klaus JansonThis 1986 comic gets a lot of the credit, and deservedly so, for reestablishing Batman in the dark and brooding manner that has made him great for so many years. This tale jumps forward, to the end of the Batman's career, as we see a fifty-something year old Bruce Wayne return to the mantle after years of retirement spent watching Gotham spiral into chaos. The best moment is when Batman squares off against the visceral mutant leader in a mud pit and rasps, "You don't get it boy, this isn't a mud hole, it's an operating table. And Im the surgeon." I just got goose bumps all over again. 6. Almost Got 'EmHere's another selection from Batman: The Animated Series, this time in the form of a single episode. Here we sit in on a poker game played by the Joker, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, and the Penguin as they all reminisce about the time they almost got Batman. Best part: the twist. Don't worry, I'm not one to ruin that kind of thing. |
| 7 Beautiful Sheet Sets by Anthropologie … Posted: 24 Feb 2011 04:02 AM PST I have a thing for bedding sets, and it's taken me ages to figure out exactly why. Specifically, it's because the simple change of bedding can update the look and feel of a bedroom, which is certainly easier and far less expensive than an entire re-decorating scheme. Along with the quilts, comforters and duvets, I love adding a matching, or contrasting, set of sheets, fueling my addiction. I quite accidentally ran into a treasure trove of gorgeous sheet sets at one of my favorite online shops, and here are the ones that currently top my must-have list. 1. Sing-Song Sheet Set
 2. Falling Leaves Sheet Set
 3. Ruffled Sheet Set

| 10 Adorable Teapots I’d Love to Add to my Collection … Posted: 23 Feb 2011 10:35 PM PST I am a budding teapot collector (I like all thing kitsch, apparently, and I’m proud of it). Unfortunately, my city has no variety (or taste) to speak of when it comes to teapot merchandise. In fact, most of the teapots in my modest collection I got on eBay. But when I browse through our local eBay for teapot finds, I always get disappointed with the poor selection. And so I end up checking out other online stores. Here are 10 that I wish I can add to my collection: 1. Orient Express
Price: $69.95 at amazon The perfect teapot for someone who loves to give in to her wanderlust more often than she sits down for tea. This teapot is just beyond adorable. I think this will be very cute beside my red telephone box teapot. 2. I’m a Little TeapotPrice: $44.99 at modcloth If Little Red Riding Hood were a teapot, she’d look like this. If she were a teapot, the wolf may have found her cute and decided not to make her life miserable. No canine can possibly wish to do a teapot this cute harm! Comes with a basket. 3. Coleman’s MustardPrice: $88.85 at amazon I am a sucker for teapots that look like other everyday things. While I am not a huge fan of mustard, I am of the color. And I think the mustard yellow and blue details of this teapot are just too cute to ignore. 4. Band on TourPrice: $104.85 at amazon Aack too expensive! But if I were a true teapot collector, I would not mind the price. So I shall be saving for this little beauty. While at it, I might even try to learn a musical instrument or two. I’m awfully tone deaf. 5. Jonathan Adler Utopia DarjeelingPrice: $110 at nordstrom It has one 5-star review and let me tell you, I am jealous of this reviewer. While my teapot collection lacks classy monochromatic pieces, her home now plays host to this beautiful Jonathan Adler teapot. |
| 8 Things You Can Achieve … Even If You Don’t Think You Can … Posted: 23 Feb 2011 12:09 PM PST It often astonishes me how it is seen as boasting to be proud of our achievements, and I wonder if this contributes to a lack of confidence in our own abilities. Many times we think that we are not capable of achieving a lot of things. However, if we only try it is surprising what we can do. Like the following … 1. Driving TestRegrettably, I was not one of those people who passed their test first time. Or even on the second attempt. No, it took me four tries before I succeeded, because of nerves. I really thought I would never get there, but I did in the end. And some people take even more tests than I did … 2. Financial IndependenceSometimes we find ourselves single after long relationships, and it is a daunting prospect not just emotionally, but financially. How can we cope with paying the bills alone? In such situations, we can become very resourceful, and find our way back to being financially independent. 3. ExamsNobody likes exams, and because there is often so much riding on them that puts a lot of pressure on us. It is very easy to doubt our ability to pass, and fear that we won't succeed in something that we need to fulfil a career ambition. But just think of that wonderful feeling when we learn we've passed! |
