8 Time Saving Tips for Cleaning …

Cleaning the house takes a long time. I’m ashamed to admit that sometimes it’s hard for me to get around to doing certain things, like washing clothes or vacuuming, because between working, taking care of the animals, doing errands, and blah, blah, blah, I do not feel like mopping the floor – and I frankly don’t have time before it’s time to start dinner and all of that. But people manage this, I know they do! I want to manage it too! For those of you who feel like this, here are 8 time saving tips for cleaning that might make all our lives easier.

1. Prevention

Naturally, the easiest way to save time in your cleaning is to prevent it from getting dirty in the first place. Yeah, I was a little skeptical about this one too – but I understand it, really. You can do light maintenance cleaning throughout the week so that you don’t have to scrub the ever loving heck out of everything when you are ready to start cleaning.

2. Time Yourself

You can time yourself with certain things, or rather, trick yourself into thinking that you only have to clean for five minutes, or ten. If you clean for ten minute increments throughout the day, you’ll be done in no time, and it won’t take a lot of time away from the rest of your work. There’s no rule saying you have to do everything all at once, though.

3. Make a Schedule

You can also make a cleaning schedule, so you know what needs done. Have a designated laundry day, or a time when you know you can wash the dishes, and so on. That way, you can use time management to work in your household responsibilities as well – and if you live with someone, you can set up a schedule for them as well!

Instead of arriving to their wedding in a glass horse-drawn coach, like another popular Princess did, this couple will arrive at the Westminster Abbey by car after they drive past the Horse Guards Parade. In College, the Prince had a nickname – P-Willy. I’m not exactly why he had that name – oh yeah “Prince William.” I actually think his nickname is worse than Katies, which was “Waity Kaitie.

Those average people have already started to come out and claim that they are some long lost relative of Kate Middleton as they are trying to get those invitations to the wedding. Is this your plan? Then you may have better luck offering to do her makeup or her hair.

7 Misconceptions about Your Laundry …

7 Misconceptions about Your Laundry …

You know, there are a lot of myths about laundry that simply aren’t true. That wouldn’t be such a big deal, but doing some of them can take a lot of time, energy, and they can even waste money. Who wants to keep doing that? Instead, why not illuminate these 7 misconceptions about your laundry, and see what you can change about the way you wash and dry your clothes.

1. Double Detergent for Dirty Clothes

Contrary to popular belief, using a double dose of detergent on really dirty clothes does not get them cleaner at all. The standard amount will clean your clothes just fine. That’s good news, because doubling up can make you run out of detergent ridiculously fast, and that stuff can get really expensive!

2. Debunking Bleach

Some people believe that they need to use chlorine bleach and nothing else, and that is definitely not the case. Rather, when you’re brightening up your whites, then yes, chlorine bleach is a good choice to make. However, if you need to brighten up your colored clothing, stay away from the chlorine and stick to oxygen bleach instead.

3. Cold Doesn’t Clean

People waste lots of hot water because they make the mistake of believing that cold water will not get their clothes clean. That’s not true at all. Back in the day, maybe, when detergents pretty much relied on hot water, that might have been the case, but today’s detergents are completely versatile. You can wash almost anything in cold water – and some things absolutely should be washed on a cold cycle. However, you should avoid washing items like underwear, socks, and towels in cold water.

7 Ways to Break That Awkward Silence …

First dates, meeting the parents, hanging out with new friends or those weird times when you happen to run into your boss in the supermarket – awkward moments of silence are bound to happen at some point. I usually "solve" them by saying a lot of stupid things nobody even asked me anything about and I always feel embarrassed about it later. And although blabbing did win me a second date with my now fiancé, it isn't always a guarantee of success. In fact, the harder you try to jumpstart a conversation, the more potentially embarrassing things you're about to blurt out! So, if you, like me, have a hard time controlling the amount of info that's being unleashed through your mouth, here's some things you can say or do to break the embarrassing silence without actually embarrassing yourself in the process.

1. Acknowledging the weird situation

Okay, so you're just sitting there staring at each other, your brain froze and you can't think of anything interesting and yet on the topic you were discussing just a couple of moments ago. Well, don't even bother. Just make a funny remark about the situation and try to tell a joke or completely change subject. I absolutely love when people do this because they make things easier for me, plus, I don't have to act like everything is cool because it actually is. Simply admitting the moment was weird kind of "un-weirds" it. Umm, "un-weirds"… is there something like that in the dictionary or I've just made up a new word?

2. Compliment a person

Be careful, thought, because if you wait until the situation gets really weird, your compliment won't seem sincere. So, when you notice the silent moment coming, use it to express your liking of his/her shirt, shoes, bag… You can definitely take it from there by saying you wanted to get something very similar for your bro/ seen a celebrity wearing something like that etc.

8 Famous Serial Killers …

For those of you looking for a bit of gruesome reading, take a look at the list I've compiled below. Here are 8 famous serial killers with a short summary of their existence. Some descriptions are a bit more detailed than others. You'll have to look up the actual person if you want all the gory details. I've summed up most of the major details in the list below.

8. The Zodiac Killer

Based in Northern California, this individual committed a number of murders between the late 60s and early 70s. His identity still is unknown. He would send taunting letters to the local newspaper that were written in cryptograms. There are sill three letters that haven't been cracked. 37 murders were claimed by the Zodiac killer in letters to the paper, but only 7 were actually confirmed. It's difficult to know just how many killings were done by the same person and how many were claimed by the name 'Zodiac' but actually performed by separate individuals.

7. Gilles de Rais

Born in the early 1400s, Gilles de Raise was a military captain who would lure young boys into his home where he would commit gruesome acts upon them. Supposedly by the time of his death he had committed more than 600 of such acts. He preferred boys with blond hair and blue eyes. The acts of Gilles de Rais are the oldest known accounts of a serial killer. He is thought to be the predecessor to the serial killers of today.

6. John Wayne Gacy

Gacy was a respected individual and grew up having a fairly normal childhood. He got along well with his mother and sisters, but his father was an alcoholic and rather abusive. Gacy got married, had a couple of kids, and eventually his wife left him after he was charged with coaxing employees to engage in homosexual acts with him. The neighbors began to complain about the smell coming from Gacy's home. When investigated, the police found 33 bodies buried nearby and directly on Gacy's property. Gacy died by lethal injection in May of 1994.

7 Reasons Not to Drink and Drive …

I know, I know, you already know WHY you should not drink and drive, but the more I read these news stories and the more I watch people drinking while behind the wheel, the more I feel that I have to write a blog on 7 reasons not to drink and drive. You may want to call this my rant – call me mean – call me what you want, but I despise you if you drink and drive.

7. You Will Get Put in Jail

Oh yeah, get caught and you will be get put in jail. Not only this, but there is a hefty fine you may have to pay and I think you deserve to have to pay every penny of it! Trust me, I don't take you people who drink and drive lightly.

6. Your Insurance Goes Up

Of course, if you get caught drinking and driving (trust me, eventually, you will be caught), that insurance premium is going to go up. It serves you right!

5. Lose Your License

For those of you who drink and drive, you could end up losing your license. Really, do you think it is worth it. I don't understand why anyone would want to do this anyways.

7 Tips on Talking to Your Teen About Sex …

7 Tips on Talking to Your Teen About Sex …

The dreaded sex talk. Where to start? Some parents don't have any problem whatsoever with talking to their teens about sex, which makes this task much easier. It can be difficult to know how young a kid should be when you mention the basics of sex. What some parents might deem to be too young, others might think it's too old. You don't want to wait until your child has already been informed by someone else about sex. If you are wondering how to go about having this type of discussion, then you might be able to use the following 7 tips on talking to your teen about sex.

7. Be open to questions

Kids are bound to have questions about sex, no matter what age they are. You can try to prepare yourself by thinking in advance how you will handle certain questions. If you have another adult that is helping with this sex talk, then maybe the two of you could tag-team on some questions. The other adult might be able to answer certain questions better or easier than you can. It also helps if the other person involved in the discussion is of the opposite sex, in order to get input from both sexes.

6. Just provide the basics

There is quite a lot involved with the whole idea of sex, so just stick to the basics. There's no sense in confusing the situation.

5. Talk about having a good self-body image

Too many teens are hung up on their appearance and they feel they need to look like the teenagers in the fashion magazines. If girls don't wear short skirts and low-cut tops they think boys won't like them as much. Be sure to explain the difference between liking someone for their appearance and liking them for who they actually are and that there is a huge difference here. Boys and girls need to know how their body image is attached to sex and the affect it has on the opposite gender at times.

7 Things to Do When It’s Snowing Out …

7 Things to Do When It's Snowing Out …

There's no reason to get all worked up when it starts snowing outdoors. Enjoy it! Whether you go outside or find something to do indoors is up to you. Here are some suggestions for 7 things to do when it's snowing out. If you aren't the outdoor type, then go for the indoor suggestions and vice versus. Some days I find that I end up doing a little bit of both. Maybe you'll find something on this list you can keep in mind for the next snowy day you experience.

7. Build a snowman

I live in the south and fortunately every time it snows it's damp enough that it's easy to make a snowman. Even the smallest amount of snow can be scraped together and formed into a cute little snowman that I can set on the railing outside the kitchen window. Sure there might be bits of grass packed into the snow, due to the weak snowfalls down here, but even my grass laden snow being brings a smile to those who see him.

6. Have a snowball fight

Who says you have to have kids to have a snowball fight? So the neighbors stare a bit when I hide in my fort and pelt the unsuspecting passerby with misshapen snowballs. Just kidding. I make very nice snowballs! A harmless snowball fight with no face shots is always fun at any age.

5. Plan for spring

Depending on the level of snowfall, this might be a good time to opt for a day indoors to plan for spring weather when it FINALLY arrives. Drag out the seed catalogs, bring out the atlas to draw up a map for a road trip, or search online for deals on spring travel. Many companies post some excellent deals during the winter to entice people to travel closer to spring.

10 Things I Enjoy Doing When It is Snowing …

Fortunately, I'm able to have fun in all types of weather, even in a major snow storm. It seems like there's always something fun to do or that I can get caught up on. I'm a procrastinator at times, so a rainy or snowy day is the perfect time for me to finish a project I started way back when. Here are 10 things I enjoy doing when it is snowing outside. I'm sure many of you have done at least some of these things as well!

10. Take the dog for a walk

A light snowfall makes for a gorgeous walk along the back roads. My dog, Annika, loves chasing snowflakes. The deeper the snow, the more she likes it too! She will run circles around me, scooping up snow with her mouth, as I walk up the hill and back. Annika makes walking in the snow a very entertaining experience.

9. Snap some photos of the birds

I don't know what it is about the snowfall that seems to bring the birds out of the woods and into my front yard. I don't see them flitting around in the trees on a nice sunny day, but as soon as the snow starts coming down hard they are everywhere. If I line the railing on the front porch with bird seed and sit very still by the open front door, I can get some great close-ups of all the fat little birds that come to check out the seed buffet.

8. Go sledding

This used to be a bigger pastime during the winter when my kids were smaller, but they still enjoy a good run now and then. I used to have a Siberian when my oldest son was very little. She was great at pulling him around the yard on his snow disc when we couldn't make it to the hill to go sledding. I don't think she ever knew he was on the sled, since he was such a lightweight!

7 Reasons Why I Love The Oscars …

Every year the Oscars come around and it is always one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the Hollywood calendar. More than movie releases, this is one regular feature that always captures an audience of over a billion viewers worldwide. So why does it hold such an appeal to a global audience? Here are 7 reasons why I love the Oscars.

1. The fabulous gowns

Of course we have to start with Oscar fashion. The Oscar red carpet has set the stage for all other events, providing an avenue for stars to be their most glamorous and beautiful in front of a global stage. It is always a pleasure to ooh and aah at all the extravagant and sometimes hideous gowns that the most famous and appreciated film stars show up in.

2. The exciting people

The other fabulous part about the Oscars is that this is one place where you get to see all the exciting Hollywood stars. From the big money movie stars like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, to the more lovable respected ones like Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, this is the one show on earth where you can catch everyone in an informal and casual mood.

3. The glittering jewelry

Off late Oscar fashion has gone beyond the gowns to include the jewelry. Some of the most prominent jewelers today take great pride in having their pieces being worn by famous celebrities as they march down the red carpet. One usually gets to see some of the most impressive array of diamonds, rubies and other precious stones ever created.

7 Ways to Make Your Home Warmer …

This is seriously like the worst winter ever, and I apologize that y’all are probably going to have to see me saying that until spring. I’m just tired of getting 84,000 feet of snow dumped over the house seemingly every other day. Because the house gets cold! My feet are freezing as we speak, in spite of slippers and thick, thick socks. Fortunately there are ways to contend with that, no matter where you live; just try these 7 ways to make your home warmer.

1. Keep out the cold

This goes without saying, but it’s actually really important. Make sure that all your doors and windows are firmly shut, for starters. That includes doors to the attic as well as doors to the outside. A single crack can let in a lot of cold air, so make sure everything shut securely.

2. Cover up your floors

If you have hard floors, whether they’re hardwood, tile, vinyl, or linoleum, keeping them covered can really help. Most of our floors are hardwood, with vinyl in the kitchen and gorgeous, freezing cold tiles in the bathroom. Stepping out of the bed or the bathtub onto freezing floors is enough to ruin my whole day – but some well placed rugs, small ones or area rugs, can really help.

3. Wear layers

Sometimes you have to do the job yourself. Like, the Better Half likes to walk around in as little clothing as possible, and while the view is just lovely, that gets cold, too. Instead, when you’re done for the day and ready to relax, just layer up: socks, slipper, warm pajama pants, long sleeved shirts. And when you go outside, if the temperatures have really dropped, try some thermals – shirts and long johns!

7 Daily Relationship Tips For Your Man …

So I think we can all raise our hands on the “dated a jerk?” question. But in spite of all the losers and Mr. Wrongs we’ve come in contact with over the years, some of us are lucky enough to be blessed with that one special, perfect man in our lives. Being a newly-wed myself, I am determined to find every way possible to keep this feeling lasting forever. Skeptical? Eh, maybe not. But you can’t blame a girl for trying! Here’s 7 daily relationship tips for your man that are tried-and-true.

1. Monday

And its back to the daily grind after a relaxing weekend that didn’t last long enough. Isn’t that how it always goes? There isn’t really much you can do to stop the monday-blues or make them disappear for good, but you can at least let him know that the day will be over soon. Pop a little note into his lunch box for him to find. Write it on his napkin, a piece of your perfume scented stationary or on a cupcake with chocolate syrup. However you choose to do it, he will love the fact that you thought of him and it will be a quick escape from the stress. If slipping notes is not an option for you, a quick phone call on his lunch break will have the same effect!

2. Tuesday

Most people assume that women like to talk and men don’t. While that may be true in some cases, Men do have feelings and emotions that sometimes need to be heard. So for today, give him a chance to talk! Listen without criticizing, taking offense or interrupting. Don’t badger or push him, but do make it a point to ask him how his day was and actually sit down to talk with him. Try not to wash dishes or text with your bestie during the conversation, give him all of your attention and you may be surprised by how much he opens up to you!

7 Tips to Survive Working from Home …

Working from home is great; you get to be in your own environment, decide your own hours and, best of all, you can wear your pyjamas all day if you want. But ladies, there are pitfalls to using your pad as your office. Sometimes it's hard to motivate yourself to get down to business in your own home and, on occasion, cabin fever tends to sets in. But girls, these problems are easily conquered; here's a list of seven tips to help you work like super-woman …

1. Get Up Early

Just because you don't need to leave the house, don't allow yourself to lounge in bed till midday. If you can, get up very early and get straight down to work. This means your projects get finished sooner and you free up more time to other things later.

2. Don't Overdo the Coffee

While it is tempting in all working environments to drink endless cups of coffee, try to restrain yourself. Too much caffeine just means you'll crash super-hard at some point. Buy yourself herbal tea sachets and drink those instead; they're much better for you and won't leave you feeling exhausted, unable to enjoy your day.

3. Don't Give Yourself Free Reign in the Kitchen

Try to conduct your day basically as you would in an office. Don't let yourself run to the kitchen every time you feel like a cookie. Instead, structure your hours so that you eat breakfast, snacks and lunch at certain times and work in between these. You'll find you spend less time procrastinating over the biscuit tin and your waistline won't expand

8 Ways To Liven Up An Office Party …

In most cases, we don't have a choice when it comes to attending an office party. But, just because our attendance is enforced does not mean that an office party cannot be a lot of fun. Here are some great ways to liven up an office party.

1. Take it out of the office

You spend all your time at the office with the same set of people. Now you are expected to socialize and have fun with them. The least you can do is change the setting and take the party out of the office.

2. Encourage everyone to get guests

This is another one of the interesting ways to liven up an office party. You all know each other from working together. Add some spice by encouraging everyone to bring at least one guest, ideally their spouse. New people bring new excitement.

3. Create a theme

Although this may sound clichéd, it is one of the most interesting ways to liven up an office party, as long as you choose a good theme. How about reality TV shows that are all a rage at the moment? Pick a reality show that everybody likes and get everyone to dress up as their favorite character.

10 Fun Winter Accessories …

I know winter is almost over (hopefully, fingers crossed, knock on wood) but, see, that’s the good part. I like to wait until around March to go shopping for next year’s winter accessories – because by then, they’re all marked down! You can buy all the cute things you’d like for next year, it’s awesome. Here, in fact, are 10 fun winter accessories I’ve got my eye on.

1. Paisley Umbrella

Price: $29.99 at modcloth.com
It rains a lot during the winter in New England – and I don’t mind that. I’d rather it rain than snow, not in the least because then I can smell the ocean from my stoop. Either way, you can also use umbrellas when it’s snowing, so it’s a great time to buy one. I’m a fan of this one, both because of the design and because bubble umbrellas keep me dryer.

2. Long Gloves

Price: $43.03 at us.asos.com
Only now could you possibly find cashmere gloves for less than fifty dollars. Even if cashmere’s not your thing, you should get a pair of long gloves for next year. Whether you like fingerless gloves with the mittens attached, leather gloves, or what have you, it’s a great time to buy. I, however, am dying for these.

3. Arm Warmers

Price: $18.00 at shanalogic.com
If you don’t like gloves, try arm warmers instead! I love these – I’m a huge fan of hot pink, of course, but I also love the biohazard symbol (which probably says a lot about me). The great thing about arm warmers is that they also look cool with practically any casual outfit.
