The parade starts at noon and is filled with very colorful characters, bands, and floats. The rest of the day can be spent taking in some sites or touring local stores. | 10 Tips for Maintaining Your Computer … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 11:21 AM PST It doesn't matter if you own a Windows PC or a Macbook; it also doesn't matter if you have a desktop, a laptop, or a netbook. Computer maintenance is something that is required to keep your system in tiptop shape. And if you think that this task is best left to the professionals, you will be surprised to learn that there are many things you can do even if you have limited technical knowledge. The following computer maintenance tips are things you should consider doing to prolong the life of your machine. 1. Protect the hardwareIf you own a laptop or a netbook, then you should consider investing in a quality padded bag or laptop sleeve. For the desktop owner, you will benefit from buying a set of protective covers. These protective items help shield your computer from dust and other small particles that can damage the hardware. 2. Protect from power surges and dropsIf you don't want power surges and drops from damaging your computer, then you should invest in a UPS (uninterrupted power supply). This device allows you to save your work and to shut down properly in cases of power surges or irregularities. You can also use surge bars or protectors to protect you from power spikes. You will still need surge protection if you are fond of plugging in your laptop. 3. Keep proper ventilationThe computer fans and vents are there for a reason. They are the cooling system needed by your computer or laptop to prevent overheating. You should make sure that the fans are working properly and that the vents are not blocked. Doing so will lengthen the lifespan of your computer and will keep it working efficiently. |
| 7 Signs You Might be a Control Freak … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 10:45 AM PST Is it hard for you to trust people? Do you hate to delegate at work? Is your worst nightmare a surprise party thrown for you without your knowledge? Ok, maybe that last one's a little extreme, but ladies, if your answer is yes to any of these questions, chances are you have an issue with control. But girls, don't despair; you're not alone. Apparently most modern women show some signs of controlling behaviour. Here are a few symptoms to look out for … 1. You Backseat DriveDo you hate to be in the car while someone else is driving? Do you slam your foot on an imaginary brake pedal and lose track of conversation because you're too busy watching the road? This, experts tell us, is a sign of classic controlling anxiety. 2. You Hate People Touching Your ThingsCan you think of nothing worse than a friend digging through your purse? Would you rather crash the car trying to find your sunglasses than let the passenger have a look for them? Controlling personalities develop powerful exceptions to people touching their possessions, even if that person is simply trying to help them out. 3. You Diet Like a ChampionPeople with control anxiety are often very picky about food. A meals needs to meet a list of stringent criteria before it can possibly be eaten and any dish that fails to make the grade will simply not be touched. |

| 8 Harmful Ingredients in Personal Care Products … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 10:11 AM PST In this day and age, technology sure has advanced. Technology has brought us many great things, but I think we could do without the chemicals that are in our personal care products. There are chemicals in the soap you wash your hair with, the toothpaste you brush your teeth with, the perfume you use to smell good, the deodorant you use to prevent sweat and even in the food we eat. Below, I am going to give you my list of 8 harmful ingredients in personal care products that you should stay away from. 8. DiethanolamineDiethanolime is actually a common ingredient that we see too often. It will appear in body washes, shampoos, shaving cream and even in your child's bubble bath. 7. PABAPABA is something that is mainly found in sunscreens. Pick up a bottle of your sunscreen and see if it has this ingredient in there. 6. AlcoholI know, I just had to list this one, because it IS harmful. I looked through the ingredients not too long ago on a lot of the stuff in the department store and nearly every single one of them had alcohol in it. EVEN the ones that claimed to be natural. It doesn't make sense to use a moisturizer if it has alcohol in it, because alcohol dries your skin up and causes wrinkles. |
| 10 Ways to Save a Failing Marriage … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 10:10 AM PST Every marriage goes through periods of highs and lows. It just the natural progression of things to have times when it is hot and spicy and other times when things are bland and boring. The key is to learn to keep things in balance and find ways to keep things exciting before your relationship disintegrates completely. If you have found yourself drifting apart from your spouse, try these 10 ways to save a failing marriage. 1. Start TalkingOne of the main reasons couples find themselves drifting apart is the lack of communication. Even on the busiest days, you need to take time to talk and connect verbally. Talk about your day, your dreams, your plans, or just the weather. Just start talking! 2. Go on Regular DatesSet a weekly date night and make it a priority. Don't break the date unless it is a real emergency. This shows that your spouse is important and that you value the time you have with him. 3. Hold HandsDo you remember the times when you held hands as a young dating couple? Reignite some of that young romance by locking fingers while you watch TV, go for a walk, or sit on the front porch. |
| Posted: 08 Mar 2011 10:08 AM PST How often do you think 'I wish I knew someone who could fix this'? Every time that something needs fixing, of course! Naturally you shouldn't make friends with someone just because they could be useful, but it's a bonus if your friends have skills that they don't mind lending. Here are some people that are good to know … 1. Big Tattooed GuyIs there a creepy neighbour bothering you? Or an ex-boyfriend who won't accept that he's an ex? You need a friend who's built like a truck and has muscles the size of most people's head. All he'll need to do is stand there, and preconceptions will do the rest. 2. GBFHurrah for Gay Best Friends! Every girl really does need one of these. He's always there when you need him, and will never make a pass at you. And no, you won't be competing with him for men, since you go for different types … 3. PlumberSure, we girls are capable of doing all sorts of things these days, but there are some problems around the house that we just can't fix. Paying a professional costs a small fortune, so a friend who knows how to fix things like plumbing is worth their weight in gold. |
| 8 Things That Make You Look Older … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 09:51 AM PST After you graduate high school, there is hardly a moment in your life when you wish you looked older. In fact, with every year that passes by you wish you could look at least the same, if not younger. So, what are the things that might possible be doing the exact opposite? Well, here are the 8 things that in my humble opinion can make appear a couple of year older, so in case you do not want that, make sure you are not caught with any of these 8 things that make you look older! 8. Gray Hair
Photo Credit: realgranola Gray hair look sexy only on George Clooney. Period. Today, they make a little thing called hair dye, so why not take advantage? This hair dye not only allows you to change your color, but it will also allow you to cover up the gray hair. If you want to look younger, then this would be the first step. In fact, it would be a good idea to start dying your gray roots as soon as you notice you are getting them. Cause the gray hairs you do not necessarily see in the mirror might be pretty visible to everyone else. So, you might want to ask your friend to help you see if there are any gray hairs anywhere. 7. Reading Glasses
Photo Credit: Jonah G.S. This is actually one of my favorite ones if you could pull it off. There are some reading glasses out there that are seductive - I am talking thick-rimmed fashionable ones. If you would like to look a bit older AND sophisticated, then the reading glasses would be great. However, if you are not sure the thick-rimmerd reading glasses you are wearing are on a fabulous side, and they do make you look older, then you might really try wearing contacts. 6. Huge Handbags
Photo Credit: Couture TriniStyle Oh goodness, grandma always carried around a huge pocketbook. It makes her look so old! Definitely, avoid carrying around a handbag the size of a suitcase for as long as you can. Unless it’s a fabulous Louis Vuitton or an equally stylish designer shopper bag. |
| Posted: 08 Mar 2011 09:51 AM PST The 7 household tips below might be new you. I tried to find a few that were new to me also. I'll have to keep them in mind for future reference! Take a look at my list and see what you think. Even if you don't have any use for them, some of them are pretty interesting. 7. Getting rid of mineral depositsA cup of vinegar to a quart of boiling water is the perfect solution for hard water stains. I've used this mixture to get the spots off of the shower head, the gross deposits that build up along the upper part of the inside of the toilet bowl, and for cleaning my coffee pot. Anywhere that a build up of minerals appears, this solution will take care of it. White vinegar works the best, but cider vinegar will do if that's all you have. 6. Cleaning up spilled greaseDepending on the amount of grease spilled, there are actually a couple of options. The easiest option is to sprinkle baking soda on the grease so you can scoop it up easier. If you don't have baking soda on hand, then rubbing ice cubes on the floor will cool the grease and make it easier to scrape up with a metal pancake turner. 5. Repairing nicks and scratchesThe method used will depend on how dark the wood is, as well as what products you have available. You might find that a couple of different techniques will have to be tried to find one that works best for you. A solution of warm black tea is great for polishing medium-brown woodwork that is showing signs of wear. For darker wood, make a paste of instant coffee and water. Rub this paste into cracks and nicks, and then rub off any excess paste leftover. As for light colored woodwork, rubbing mayonnaise into the scratches helps. Let the mayo stand for a bit before wiping it off. |
| 7 Tips on Preventing Identity Theft … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 09:46 AM PST Identity theft can spell disaster and it can be extremely challenging to recover from it. You might think that identity theft is something that happens to other people and not to you. You can be in for a rude shock if you are not careful. Here are some tips on preventing identity theft. 1. Shred your documentsInvest in a document shredder and ensure that you shred all the documents that have important personal information like your credit card or debit card number, your account details, your social security number, etc. These documents include your ATM receipts, your bank statements, your credit report, etc. 2. Change your passwords regularlyThis is one of the tips on preventing identity theft that is most important for online transactions. It is important that you change your passwords on a regular basis. Most bank accounts will prompt you to do so, but even if they don't, change your passwords regularly. 3. Create strong passwordsThis is another tip for online accounts. Ensure that you create a strong password, i.e. an alphanumeric password with some alphabets in caps. Do not use common denominators like your birthday, your spouse's or children's name, etc. Create a password that is unrelated to you personally. |
| 10 Words to Remember for a Healthy Romance … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 09:38 AM PST I love words of all kinds! Long ones, little ones, old ones, new ones, you name it! For this article, I’ve chosen to come up with 10 words I believe are great words for a heatlhy romance. Want to see? Please, read on! 1. RomanticWhat’s a romance worth without some romantic expressions? “Romantic” means “marked by expressions of love or affection; condusive to or suitable for lovemakeing…” Every romance needs romantic gestures, no? 2. AphrodisiacAs I’m sure you know, an “aphrodisiac” is something that excites and arouses our sexual desires. Among the long list of aphrodisiacs, you’ll find dark chocolate, strawberrries, bananas, almonds, oysters, figs and honey! That should make for a most wonderful evening! Have a nice meal of oysters, dessert consisting of strawberries, almonds and chocolate, drizzle a little honey, and you’re set! 3. Infatuation“Foolish or extravagant love and admiration.” There is nothing wrong with acting foolish with each other from time to time! Some time, you should go all out for your sweetheart sometime, all extravagant-like. Make him feel like a king, and he’ll make you feel like a queen! |
| 7 Things You Must Ask Yourself Before Getting a Tattoo … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 09:15 AM PST A tattoo can be a wonderful decoration, a material form of some of your most precious memories or a stupid childish decision you beat yourself about every day. It all depends on how much time, energy and rational thinking you've invested in the whole process. Well, at least that's how I see it. Now, since I'm a Libra a.k.a the one who thinks three times before doing anything, I believe any action that will affect your later life deserves to be thought through. And here are some questions I felt the need to ask myself and think you should too: 1. Is this the ideal place for it?Once you get it done, there's no turning back so think good about the area of your skin you want to cover in ink. Try getting a henna tattoo first and see how it feels having that image on that particular place. If you still like it, go for it. I, for example, wanted to get a tattoo really much but none of the possible body parts seemed like "the one I'd want to get permanently inked" I was contemplating it for months, did numerous henna tattoos and although each and every one of them looked cool, I somehow knew I wouldn't feel comfortable with the real deal. 2. Will I like it in 5 to 10 years?Colors fade over the years, lines kind of stretch too and, as our bodies change so does everything on them, including the tattoos. So, before you finally schedule your inking, do try to imagine that same tattoo ten or fifteen years from now. Sure, your belly looks perfect now, but what's going to happen when you decide to have kids? Just something to think about… 3. Did I choose the right image? Are you about to do a popular tribal symbol or something that has a deeper meaning for you? That's really something you want to think long and hard about, because I've met a lot of people who got a tattoo just because it "looks cool" and deeply regretted it later. |
| 7 Denim Related Fashion Faux Pas … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 09:12 AM PST Denim is a staple. I mean, everyone has their favorite pair of jeans, the ones they can wear and look good no matter how they feel. I have something like ten pairs of jeans myself. They’re my favorite pants to wear. No matter how classic denim is, however, there are just some things you need to avoid like the plague – and you can start out with the 7 denim related fashion faux pas listed here. 1. Mom Jeans
Photo Credit: acupfullofsunshine I know that "mom jeans" can be comfortable, but you have to admit that they aren’t the most flattering pants in the world. And while you might feel like they’re holding in your tummy and making you look slimmer, they can actually make you look larger than you really are. You might live in mortal fear of a muffin top, but I can tell you, as a girl, that I’ve seen muffin tops on other women and you know what? They still looked sexy. 2. Pajama Jeans
I have to apologize in advance because y’all are probably going to be seeing me rant about these a lot. I get livid and froth at the mouth every time I see the commercial on TV. Pajama jeans will not make your butt look like that. You are going to look like you’re wearing the most unflattering pants you could possibly find, and it is not worth it to shave off two seconds of time by not changing your pants before you go to the store. 3. Overalls
Photo Credit: karin8700 I wore overalls so much when I was young, and I just shudder to think of it now. There was a time in the 1990s where they were actually popular … kind of. People still wear them of course, but look, I’m sorry. Unless you are a farmer or have some other occupation where overalls are a practical choice, just stay away. Don’t give in to the temptation. They are not cute. |
| 7 Reasons I Hate Groundhog Day … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 08:59 AM PST As I write this, Groundhog Day is just a few days past. Its coming and going reminded me, once again, how much I hate this so-called holiday. It’s silly to dislike a day so much, but I really do. It grates on my nerves a little more every year. When I was a kid, I used to get all excited about it, because there was something neat about a groundhog who could basically predict the future. Now, however, I hate Groundhog day a little more every year, and here are 7 of the reasons why. 1. I always forget about itGroundhog Day isn’t really a holiday at all. It’s on the calendar, but whereas I used to be obsessed with keeping an eye on the calendar (to count the days between weekends), these days I just rely on my computer’s calender and the one on my cell phone – neither of which have holidays and pseudo holidays marked. So now, every year, February 2 just seems like February 2, until inevitably, a day or two before, I start to hear people begin talking about Punxsutawney Phil. 2. The lead-upSpeaking of which, like say, a few days before Groundhog Day, I start hearing people discuss Punxsutawney Phil. Buying food for my rabbit at Petco, the lady behind me starts talking to her friend about what it will mean if we get six more weeks of winter weather. At the grocery store, the cashier has an ages long discussion with the woman in front of me, while my ice cream melts into a puddle. I begin to go a little crazy. 3. Facebook makes it worseOnce upon a time, I could get away from this Punxsutawney madness by retreating to the inner sanctum of my home, where talk of groundhogs and their prognostications could be strictly forbidden. Now, however, I get home with my ice cream (which has frozen again into a strange shape because, since the rodent has not yet predicted anything, it is still freezing cold outside, allowing my Rocky Road to solidify on the way home) to discover five different groundhog related discussions on Facebook. They each have 10+ comments. |
| 7 Things I Love Getting in the Mail … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 07:59 AM PST Regular mail is fast losing its place in the communication world when it comes to sending and receiving text information but as far as packages and deliveries go, it is still the only vehicle. There is something exciting and appealing about receiving a package from a courier or postman, signing for it and then rushing inside to tear it open and enjoy its contents. Here are 7 things I love getting in the mail. 1. FlowersBy far the best thing to get delivered to your home or office is a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Whether they are packed in a box or delivered as a flower arrangement, nothing makes you feel as special when you're on the receiving end. Whatever the occasion, receiving flowers by mail is an immediate mood boost. 2. Chocolates and cakesOriginally flowers were the only romantic gift to send to your loved one. Today of course you can send a variety of things including chocolates and cakes. Receiving a beautifully presented box with delicious chocolates, cakes and pastries inside is a wonderful experience, one that should be passed on if you get the chance. 3. Wedding invitationsReceiving wedding invitations are always a pleasure, particularly if it's the wedding of someone close to you. Going through the carefully designed card, ribbon, lace and other adornments is quite enjoyable as it gives a taste of the kind of ceremony that lies ahead and also gets you started on your plans for the event. |
| Posted: 08 Mar 2011 06:33 AM PST While all of the beautiful (and lucky) people celebrate Carnival in Rio, or Mardi Gras in New Orleans, we here in the Midwest States observe today as Fat Tuesday, or Pączki Day.
What is a pączki, you ask? First, it’s pronounced POONCH-key. It’s similar to a donut, made with flour, butter, sugar and eggs, then filled with fruit (like apricot or raspberry) or cream. They’re Polish, and delicious, the ideal treat for the day before Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins. One tasty little pączki contains between 20 and 27 grams of fat (depending on the filling you choose) and a whopping 420 calories. That’s as much fat as a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with cheese and as many calories as a double cheeseburger. To burn off these calories, you’d need to walk briskly for two hours. Yikes! Good thing Fat Tuesday only comes once a year… Photo Credit: The Detroit News |
| Posted: 08 Mar 2011 02:45 AM PST Happy birthday to the ultra-hot Kat Von D, tattoo artist and bag girl extraordinaire. She turns 29 today. It's amazing to think this little firebrand has gotten so much done before she's even turned 30! She's become a world-famous artist, TV personality (first on Miami Ink, then on her own show, L.A. Ink), and a published author. Here's to another gorgeous, heavily inked year, my dear! |
| 7 of my Favorite Works of Art … Posted: 08 Mar 2011 02:08 AM PST I firmly believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it's definitely true about art. Art has the ability to rouse tremendous passion but what is perfection to one person is an anathema to the next. My favourite works of art would probably be scoffed at by lovers of old masters or pop art, but on the other hand, for me, modern art is completely unfathomable and actually pretty pointless. I normally have a very eclectic taste in most things but my 7 favourite works of art are actually quite a limited style range. 1. Irises – Vincent Van Gogh
Van Gogh is absolutely my most favourite artist of all time. I love all his works and it's a real shame that he only ever sold one painting when he was alive. I can't imagine the joy he would feel knowing how much his paintings fetch today. This one sold for $54million in 1987. 2. Bandit – Govinder NazranPhoto Credit: Liberty Galleries I actually own number 65 from a limited hand-finished edition of 95 of this painting and it's my most prized and most expensive possession. He had a remarkable perspective on how to draw cats, dogs and rabbits. He sadly died in 2009, aged only 44. 3. The Little Dancer – Degas
Famous for both his paintings and sculptures of ballet scenes, I adore the tactile look to this figurine made of bronze. I love the way the folds of the tutu make you just want to put your hand out to stroke them. |
