| Posted: 10 Mar 2011 11:39 AM PST These are just some fun tidbits about one of my favorite actors, comedians, writers, and directors, all rolled into one fantastic person. Here are 7 facts on Adam Sandler that I bet you will enjoy. Hopefully you don't already know them all so you'll have something exciting to learn about Adam Sandler! 7. He sang at his sister's weddingI'm sure a few people have had a sibling sing at their wedding, but one who was 12 at the time? Sandler was 12 when he sang at his sister's happy gathering. The song was 'You're Sixteen'. How sweet is that! I wonder if he sang it in a silly voice like he does most of his other songs. 6. He never needs to prepare for comedy actsSandler is all about improvisation. All of his comedy acts are done on the spot. I think this shows true talent. So many actors rehearse over and over again and do the same bit on each talk show they appear on. This gets old. I'd much rather watch Sandler's act and wonder what he's going to come up with next. 5. His dog was an actor tooOne of Sandler's dogs was in at movie with him. Meatball was the name of his dog who stared in 'Little Nicky'. Meatball died in February of 2004, the year after he was dressed as the Best Man in Sandler's wedding to Jacqueline Titone. Sandler's female bulldog named Matzoball has also passed away and now he only has his bulldog named Babu left. |
| 13 Easy Ways to Make Clothes Last Longer … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 11:23 AM PST Clothing is one of our basic necessities. Our clothes protect us from the elements and make us decent enough to go out in public. Aside from being functional, clothes have also become a tool for self-expression. We pick our outfits depending on the mood we are in, the reaction we want to elicit, and as a reflection of our personality. Clothes, as important and as useful as they are, don't always come cheap. Even when buying from secondhand, consignment, or thrift stores, clothing costs can add up. That is why it is important that we know how to get the most out of our clothing. Here are 13 easy ways to care for our clothes to make them last longer. 1. Limit launderingConsider holding off on laundry if you've only worn your clothes once or for a few hours. (Of course, this greatly depends on the activity you were doing and the sweat that you might have transferred onto your clothes.) The reasoning behind this is that excessive laundering breaks down fibers and fades colors faster. Limiting your laundering is not only good for your clothes but it will also help you save money, energy, and water. 2. Segregate your clothesSome colored or dark clothes are not colorfast so they will stain your other clothes when you do the laundry. This is why it's so important that you learn to segregate your clothes before doing laundry. Here are the basic rules I follow: keep whites separate from colored clothes; wash similar colored-clothes together; wash dark colored clothes last. Of course, you also have to consider how delicate the clothes are when you segregate and wash them. 3. Use cold waterWashing clothes in cold water is better for your clothes because the fabric will not break down as fast as when you wash clothes in hot water. Using cold water not only preserves your clothes but you also use less energy. |
| 7 Ways to Become a Better Writer … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 10:49 AM PST Writing skills, in my opinion, are an essential part of life. They're skills that I think we should all nurture. If you improve your writing skills, you will improve your communication skills. And life is all about communicating. 1. Be ConciseThe best way to be clear and concise is to adopt a plain writing style. Avoid being too wordy and use plain language that everyone can understand. Convoluted sentences will only confuse readers. Keep it simple and keep everybody happy. 2. Give Good GrammarUsing good grammar will make your writing seem more polished. It will also make your work easier to read. As a writer, learning proper grammar will make it easier to construct sentences and paragraphs. If you think that your grammar needs working on, invest in a good technical writing hand guide. 3. Have a PlanPlan what you want to say. Ask yourself what the purpose of your story will be. Decide on all your major points of conversation and sub-points. Having an outline will help you stay on topic as well as making the writing process easier. |
| Posted: 10 Mar 2011 10:46 AM PST Girls, aren't you tired of just 'dinner and a movie?' The first date is so important and a bad one can really ruin a promising relationship. Instead of killing that potential spark with a terrible film and lots of awkward silences, plan an easy-going rendezvous for you and your prospective man, and make it one that gives the two of a real chance to connect. Here's a list of fun alternative ideas that promise to make that first meeting memorable … 1. Have a PicnicTo me, the first date is about getting to know someone, and girls, I just don't think that can happen if you spend all evening sitting in silence, watching a movie. A picnic makes for a great, relaxed afternoon and one where you and your new man can do lots of talking. Pick a beautiful spot and pack a basket of tasty snacks: trust me ladies', it'll be heavenly! 2. Go for CoffeeOkay, so this one is kind of old-fashioned, but coffees and cakes in a gorgeous little café can really make for the perfect first date. More casual than dinner, but still intimate enough, this scenario gives you plenty of opportunity to stare into his eyes over the chocolate croissants but at the same time encourages a laid back, chatty atmosphere ideal for new couples. 3. Walk your DogsIf you're both dog lovers this is a fun way to connect. Pick a lovely, friendly park and meet on a warm evening after work to avoid that Sunday-morning-married-couple vibe. |
| 7 Facts on World of Warcraft … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 10:38 AM PST Hi, I would like to introduce myself as Vaperia. I am a level 73 Mage. I am one of many characters that Melanie has. My favourite spell is Pyroblast and I also enjoy freezing people and turning them into penguins that walk around chirping. I enjoy kicking butt in PvP and who knows, maybe you and I will meet one day and I will kick you butt as well. Okay, so I'm going to let Melanie get started on her 7 facts on World of Warcraft … 7. Lots of PlayersThere are around 11.5 million World of Warcraft subscribers throughout the world. If you look at it, that's more people than there is in New York City. That is a lot of people who play World of Warcraft and I am happy to be one of them. 6. 150 DevelopersIt only took a total of one hundred and fifty developers to create 5,300 NPC's, 30,000 items and 7,600 quests in this game. Wow, I don't know what amazes me the most – the fact that it only took 150 characters or the fact that there are so many items, NPCs and Quests in this game. Will it ever end? I doubt it. 5. The Server SideThis is amazing – the server side of this game consists of 1.3 petabytes of storage, 20,000 computers, 5.5 million lines of code, 2 million words of text and 75,000 CPU cores. This is a very complex situation! |
| Posted: 10 Mar 2011 10:36 AM PST I love lighting. When I go to IKEA or Home Depot or really any store that has a lighting section, I have a tendency to get a crick in my neck because I spend so much time looking up at all the lighting fixtures, globes, and chandeliers on display. Currently I have about three different fixtures waiting to go up in the house, and I’m always on the lookout for more. Most of my faves come from IKEA, as you’ll see when you check out these 9 awesome lighting fixtures. Maybe you’ll get some ideas for your home, too! 1. IKEA PS Pendant Lamp
 2. Knappa Pendant Lamp
 3. Kristaller 3-Armed Chandelier

| 8 Reasons To Try Making Your Own Clothes … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 10:10 AM PST I've dabbled a bit in sewing over the years, but have stuck to making simple items like bags and tablecloths. The reason is that the idea of making clothes has always seemed too complicated! Recently though I've been looking at some websites, which make it look much simpler, and I'm planning to have a go. Here are some reasons why making your own clothes is worth the effort. 1. Uniqueness
Photo Credit: Stacie Stacie Stacie The uniformity of most clothing these days can be quite depressing, so if you like dressing in an original style, making your own clothes is ideal. You can be sure that you will not see someone else wearing the same garment! 2. Fit
Photo Credit: SWANclothing Do you often find that one size is too small, and the other is too big? Or that sleeves are always too long? If you take up dressmaking, problems like these are a thing of the past. You can adapt the pattern so that the garment fits you perfectly – this is especially good if you're short or tall! 3. Fun
Photo Credit: laurabububun Making your own clothes can be a lot of fun. Okay, so you might make some mistakes along the way, but that's all part of learning and practising. Often, mistakes can be undone and you can try again. And if not, well you've learned something! |
| 10 Things That Can Make You Happy During the Day … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:55 AM PST There are many things that make me happy during the day, but unfortunately, there are already blogs on those things and I don't want to duplicate it. Therefore, in my 10 things that can make you happy during the day, I am going to give you a unique list – on this list, even though it makes me happy, you will not find "the sunshine, playing with my pets, going for a walk in the woods, etc." 10. Finding Money You Didn't Know You LostIt is always great to find money that you know you did not have. Hint: Looking under the couch or under the cushions of your couch is a great place to find money you didn't know you lost. This is what I do a lot. In fact, I kind of think of my couch as being a piggy bank … without the tail! 9. Wearing Clothes Fresh Out of the DryerI have always enjoyed wearing clothes that were fresh out of the dryer. Even better, after a bath, putting on those warm pajamas that just came from the dryer. 8. Hearing Someone Adopted a PetI am not sure about you, but whenever I hear that someone has adopted a pet, it makes me happy. I love to hear that a pet has been given another chance and is going to have a forever home. |
| 7 Tips on Getting Rid of Mice … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:54 AM PST As much as I adore mice and watching their little whiskers twitch as they explore things, I can't have them destroying my home. If you find yourself in the same situation at times, then the following 7 tips on getting rid of mice could prove useful. It tried to cover all bases, even the not-so-friendly ones. 7. Buy trapsI know this is probably a mean option that most people try to avoid, but it is a way to get rid of mice, so I put it on the list. I don't like having to trap mice to get rid of them, since this usually involves maiming them in one way or another. I think mouse poison can also be lumped into this tip, since it causes just as much pain as a physical mouse trap. 6. Purchase ultrasonic pest devicesThe only downfall to these is that they also affect guinea pigs, rabbits, and other small mammals. If you have any such animals as pets indoors, they might not take to kindly to your ultrasonic mouse deterrents. 5. Eliminate what they are afterIf you notice mice in a particular area, then there must be something attracting them to that spot. See if you can find what the attraction is and get rid of it. For instance, I had mice constantly in the shed. I noticed a small sack of bird seed that had fallen down behind a box and there were tons of mouse turds all around it. Mystery solved. I got rid of the bag of feed and the mice decided to find a new hangout as well. |
| 7 Key Questions to Ask Your Car Salesman … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:49 AM PST Buying a car can be a big decision. Unless you are making a cash purchase, you are likely to be paying for the car for years to come. That is why, it becomes important that you buy the best car in your budget and that you get the best deal possible. Here are key questions to ask your car salesman to make sure you are making the best choice possible. 1. The 'invoice' priceThe invoice price is the price that the dealer has paid for the car and is a good starting point for a negotiation. Of course, there are many prices that are added on as well as subtracted from the invoice price and every dealer has different methods of buying his cars, but this makes a good start. 2. Best time to buyTypically, the last day of the month at the end of the quarter is the best time to buy. But, very often, the best time is just before new vehicles are about to arrive on the lot. One of the key questions to ask your car salesman is whether there are new models arriving in the near future. 3. No haggle priceFew dealerships put up a sign that says 'No haggle prices'. One of the key questions to ask your car salesman is if the sign really means what it says. Most dealers will be happy to negotiate a little bit to close the deal and it may be in your best interest to haggle a bit. |
| 8 Unusual Places to Meet People … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:42 AM PST Coffee shops, clubs, vacations – there's like a million of normal places you'd go to if you want to go from "single" to "in relationship". What the heck, even internet could be considered a normal or, at least, very popular way to meet new and interesting people. But, what happens if you have already tried out these places and still haven't met the man of your dreams, friend for life or a new "crew" that's fun to hang out with? Was the timing bad or the only wrong thing about the whole experience were people you came across? Well, sometimes it's a little bit of both, so here's some other places you might want to have in mind too: 1. Flea markets and yard salesYou'll do some shopping, maybe even find some valuable collectibles and meet a lot of people! Now, isn't that the best of both worlds? You don't even have to have any speeches prepared because in colorful, cheerful environments such as these, it's always easy to find something to talk about. 2. Planes and busesYou'd be surprised about how many cool people you can meet by simply not dozing off during that "boring ride". I've meet a very talented painter , a wacky kid that reminded me so much about my brother, a professor of Greek language who has helped me a lot in terms of which books should I get and where to find her if I ever need some tutoring, as well as many other interesting folks. A friend of mine was lucky enough to share a plane with a popular male model/TV host and she still has a picture to prove it. Bingo! 3. Weddings and funeralsIt does sound a bit morbid but I'm sure you remember that Sex and The City episode when Miranda manages to find a date on her last date's wake. Weddings are also a cool way to meet people – you look great, why not use it? The biggest problem is that most of us don't really feel like attending these events alone and the best things always happen when you have nobody else to focus you attention on. I met a really cute guy on a wedding once. We didn't really date and all but we stayed in touch, went out together and I've met a lot of his friends too! |
| 7 Things to Remember When on the Job … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:40 AM PST Today’s average office seems to have workers that have forgotten what their job is all about. It seems some people need a little reminder about what working a job is, wouldn’t you agree? Here are 7 things to remember when on the job. 1. Leave the Beautifying HomeThe office is no place for painting nails or plucking eyebrows! Yuck! You may as well just pull off your shoes, throw your feet on the desk and clip your toenails! Save that kind of stuff for your bathroom! 2. Save the GossipIt’s probably best to save all personal phone chats for when you’re off duty, but if you must chat while at work, at least save the gossip for later. Believe it or not, most of the co-workers in your office don’t really want to hear about the ugly details of Sally’s affair, or Joe’s prostate surgery! 3. Be Professional – No Matter WhatI was in an un-named location the other day, and watched as one employee was slightly reprimanded. It wasn’t a big deal, the manager just didn’t want something to be mistaken again, and brought it to the attention of the person responsible. Rather than acting professional and accepting the reprimand as it was meant, they chose to make a scene, and let’s just say, it didn’t end well. Even when you feel you’re not in the wrong, take it gracefully. If you feel you must say something, ask to do it in the privacy of the office. On the flip side, being professional goes beyond acceptiong reprimands, it can also mean how you dress, and how you act. Dress like you want the CEO’s job – act as if the President is in the office. When you get a promotion, you’ll thank me! |
| 7 Instruments I’d Love to Learn … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:02 AM PST I love music. I love listening to it, and I loved playing it. I first joined my school band at 11, and played all the way up through graduation. I was an enormous band geek, and proud of it. I played trombone at school and, at home, just for the fun of it, I taught myself to play bass guitar. I kind of taught myself how to play the keyboard, but not really, since the only song I really know is "Greensleeves." I’d love to be able to play a lot of things properly – especially these particular 7 instruments I’d love to learn. 1. French HornI’ve been in love with the French horn since middle school concert band – and for once it’s not because I love all things French by default. When played well, this is probably the loveliest horn ever in the world. It’s clear and clean and music, and I think it needs to be featured more everywhere because it has the power to move you to tears. 2. Acoustic GuitarThe acoustic guitar can also move me to tears. I love so many acoustic songs, and I love hearing this guitar when someone who really knows what they’re doing is playing it. I’m not much interested in other types of guitar, beyond my trusty bass (I named him Endymion when I got him – height of my John Keats phase, doncha know), but I’d love to learn how to play this one well. 3. ViolinOh man, I love the violin. This is in spite of the fact that I once dated someone who claimed to play it, bragged about it, snotted about it, snarked about it, but never actually played it in front of me (and who was also a horrible person in general, but that’s another post). Anyway, a well played violin can pluck at the heart strings, no question, and I would love being able to do that. |
| 7 Quick Ways To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies … Posted: 10 Mar 2011 08:01 AM PST Fruits are great for your health and well being. But, fruits sometimes bring along fruit flies and that is the beginning of a serious pest problem. Fruit flies do not seem very harmful, since they do not bite, but they can pass diseases through the fruits they touch. Here are some quick ways to get rid of fruit flies. 1. Using fly whisksFly whisks are a simple way of getting rid of fruit flies, but only if their number is relatively small. Make a fly whisk by taking a stick and tying a few pieces of shredded plastic bags on one end. You can then wave it around to discourage fruit flies from settling on fruits. 2. Using fly swattersSimilar to fly whisks, these are useful only if there are a small number of fruit flies. Fly swatters are used to swat at the flies, which can sometimes kill them and make them go squish. Make sure you clean the swatter as well as the area where the squished fruit fly drops. 3. Using bug zappersAn advanced version of fly swatters, this is one of the quick ways to get rid of fruit flies. These are like tennis racket with electrified netting that zaps the bugs it touches. Once again, be sure to clean the zapper netting as well as the surfaces where dead fruit flies fall. |
| Lady Gaga and Target Part Ways… Posted: 10 Mar 2011 06:53 AM PST On February 10, Target announced a partnership with Lady Gaga to sell a special deluxe edition of her new album, “Born this Way,” at their stores and online. But late yesterday, The Amp broke the news that the partnership is over before it ever really began.
Why? Well, Lady Gaga is a very outspoken supporter of the LGBT community, and within the past 2 years, Target has donated $150,000 to a group called MN Forward, which opposes gay rights. Even after the donation was criticized by the LGBT community, Target’s donations didn’t stop… Target is reviewing its policy on donations to such groups, but that must not have placated Lady Gaga, who cited crucial differences in their outlooks on LGBT issues as a reason for quitting the partnership. The deluxe version of “Born this Way” includes 3 special studio tracks and five remixes, and anyone who pre-ordered the album (or rather, disc) between February 10th and 26th at the Target website got to download a free copy of the title track. |

| Posted: 10 Mar 2011 05:22 AM PST Today is the birthday of not one, or two, but THREE gorgeous female celebs! So we’d like to wish a very merry birthday to Emily Osment, Carrie Underwood, and Sharon Stone.
Isn’t it amazing that three such talented women share the same birthday? Osment, from Disney’s Hannah Montana, is 19 today. Country super-star and actress Carrie Underwood — whose new movie, Soul Surfer, opens April 8 — is 28. And blonde bombshell Sharon Stone is 53, and still as gorgeous and sassy as ever. … I’m just now realizing that all three of these women are blonde… hmm! Something else they have in common! Happy birthday, ladies! Here’s to another year of success and happiness! |
