| 9 Tips on Choosing the Right Pet … Posted: 17 Mar 2011 11:52 AM PDT When you decide you’re ready for a pet, picking the right fit for you and/or your family is profoundly important. Although you might like kittens, think puppies are cute, or feel it would be really neat to have a lizard, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the pet will fit in with your lifestyle. There are a number of things to consider when you’re ready for an animal, but you can start out by following these tips on choosing the right pet. 1. Picking What You WantFirst thing’s first, of course. You need to give serious thought to the kind of pet you think you want. It might be something more traditional, like a dog, a cat, or a bunny (I have all three!). You might want a fish, a hamster, or a guinea pig. Or you might be more into the idea of a turtle, a frog, a snake, or a bird. 2. Planning AheadOnce you’ve narrowed down your choices, you have to start planning ahead for things like pet care. No matter what kind of pet you get, it will likely need to make visits to the veterinarian through the course of its life. It will need vaccines, it may need to be spayed or neutered, and so on. You may even want to plan ahead in terms of getting veterinary insurance for your pet. 3. Managing TimePets take a lot of commitment. Having a pet really is like having a child to a degree, because you have to have plenty of time to spend with it, and plenty of patience to deal with it. Puppies need to be potty trained, after all, and cats and even rabbits need to be litter trained. All of this takes a lot of patience – and a lot of time. You have to make sure that you can work those things in your schedule. |
| 8 Tips For Practising Meditation … Posted: 17 Mar 2011 11:09 AM PDT It's so easy to get stressed these days, what with all the pressures of modern life. Working long hours, dealing with children and elderly parents, looking after the home, money worries … all of these can add up to a lot of mental and physical stress. Meditation is a great way of helping to alleviate the pressure, so here are some tips on how to get the most out of sessions. 1. SilenceIt's really hard to find a silent place these days, but when you want to meditate, you need as much quiet as possible. Switch the phone off, ignore any sounds you can hear, and concentrate on building a quiet place for yourself to relax in. 2. EnvironmentIf it's impossible for you to relax and meditate at home, then take yourself off to the park, or somewhere else where there are few people (and definitely no traffic noise). This can actually be quite helpful, in that it takes you out of your normal environment and its many distractions, and allows you to focus on yourself and your meditation. 3. RegularityWhen you first start practising meditation, it's not that easy. Most of us find it difficult to still our minds. Like many things, however, meditation becomes easier the more you practise it – so try to do a short session as often as possible. It really will pay off. |
| 7 Secrets of Successful Women … Posted: 17 Mar 2011 11:05 AM PDT What sets successful women apart from the rest of the pack? Were they simply born lucky or do they have a secret strategy that led them to the top? Most successful women agree that achieving success requires an ability to recognize opportunities when they present themselves and a risk-taking attitude that allows them to take advantage of these opportunities. Successful women are often happy to share their secrets; what follows is a list of helpful tips from various women who have found success. Here are 7 secrets of successful women. 1. Set a GoalDecide on a goal and then set about attaining it. It is crucial to know where you are heading. Keep your focus on the brass ring and pursue it relentlessly. Your every action should have a clear purpose and leave you another step close to your goal. 2. Put Aside Your FearsDon't let fear paralyze you into doing nothing; you are your only limitation. Believe in yourself or no one else will; Michael Dell (Dell Computers) was told time and again that his ideas would fail. He was convinced his ideas would succeed; the rest is history. Don't talk yourself into failure! 3. Rely on InstinctWhen faced with choices, let your instinct lead the way. Highly successful women frequently "go with the gut" to make the most important decisions; they rely on instinct first and analysis second. Hindsight shows that first instincts are generally right. |
| Posted: 17 Mar 2011 10:43 AM PDT I do enjoy a good museum. When I lived in London, I just loved being able to visit the V&A and the Natural History Museum on a regular basis. Where I live now we have the shoe museum, which to be fair is actually pretty cool and when I go on vacation I like to visit a local museum. I'm still not sure whether the weird and wonderful is my sort of thing and after looking up this lot I'm about to present to you I really have just one question: Why? 1. The Icelandic Phallological Museum
I'm sure if this museum was based somewhere on mainland Europe or in the States it would get more visitors. This museum is dedicated to the penis. It has 272 specimens from 92 different species including human. There are also 300+ oddments relating to the general penis theme –one can only imagine… What did John Bobbitt do with his? 2. The Sulabh International Museum of Toilets
Do you want to join the Sanitation Crusade? This is the published objective of this strange place. Oddly, there are some incredible works of art in these bathroom essentials and it covers the entire history from chamber pots to the ultra modern space age loo of today. There is a serious side to this though – sanitation in India needs a crusader like Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak. 3. Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum
Only well-seasoned museum hounds can enjoy something like this, others will just be all shook up. In Gatlinburg, Tennessee you can see 20,000 salt and pepper shakers that have been collected by Andrea Ludden for over 22 years. |
| 7 Ways To Mak A City Your New Home … Posted: 17 Mar 2011 09:41 AM PDT Fitting into a new area with new faces can be intimidating as least. It’s not fun being the “new kid on the block” as we say. So, what do you do? How do you fit in? 1. Get To Know Your SurroundingsFamiliarize yourself with the places around you. Take a drive, and learn where the supermarket is, where the library is, and where the best restaurants are. Just knowing where you’re at, and where things are can make a difference in how you feel about a place. 2. Bring a Piece of the Old Home placeIn the old pioneer days, it was very common for the family to take a handful of the ground from home with them as they braved the great unknown. It was their way of taking a bit of home with them. Whether you choose to actually take some of your dirt or not, there are ways to take a bit of home with you. Take something that is characteristic of your hometown – whatever it may be, and you’ll always have something to remember it by. 3. Keep PicturesSet out familiar pictures of your family and friends everywhere. Keeping familiar faces and friends will give you a sense of security and feeling of home. You’ll feel right at home! |

| Posted: 17 Mar 2011 09:30 AM PDT Penguins are very beautiful creatures and most of us do not have the pleasure of having them live around us where we are able to observe them. Recently, they added a "Tuxedo Coast" to the local zoo. I was surprised to find that it consisted of a habitat of penguins. I have always been fascinated with penguins and yes, my daughter and I enjoyed watched "Happy Feet" together – we thought that was a cute movie. Let me give you 8 facts on penguins … 8. There are Eighteen Different TypesThese are eighteen different types of penguins. You can find them on the coasts of New Zealand, Australia, Chile, South Africa, Peru and even on the Galapagos Islands around the equator. 7. They Look Cute and CuddlyOh yes, these cute little things look cute and cuddly, but you should not judge a book by its cover. Penguins are born hunters. Their beaks are razor sharp and their wings are able to give a big blow if an intruder were to get close. Make sure you observe them from a safe distance. 6. KidnappingWhen a mother loses a baby, do you know what they do? They go and kidnap another mother's baby. Wow, now, don't go doing that – because it's illegal for us to take someone else's baby – we have to fill out a bunch of paperwork and go through interviews to adopt a baby. |
| 7 Things That Suggest He Is Going Through a Midlife Crisis … Posted: 17 Mar 2011 09:12 AM PDT Oh, the midlife crisis – I've hated every single moment of my dad going through it just as much as I've hated my mom's menopause. You think you're having a bad time? Well, ask your kids how they feel! But, let's skip the kids for now and deal with your hubby-gone-wild only. Okay? So, you think he's going through a much feared midlife crisis? Well, here's how to check if that's really the case: 1. He's bored, depressed and unhappy with his lifeHe could be the most successful one you know and still demonstrate this obvious sign of midlife crisis. Why? Because no matter how many of good choices he has made, there will always be some roads he chose not to take. Those "unfulfilled dreams" come back to haunt them at some point, usually when it's too late to make them happen. A man suddenly realizes he's "too old" and get's all depressed because "his life wasn't supposed to turn out that way". Boo Hoo! 2. He spends a lot of time "grooming himself"If you suddenly have to wait in line to use the mirror, you can be 100% sure he's going through a midlife crisis. Some men start dying their hair while others feel the need to make a serious change of style. This doesn't mean he's having an affair, at least not yet. He had an unexpected reality check and realized that he is getting old. Oh dear, oh my! 3. He starts noticing other womenI don't mean to scare you but a lot of men suffering from a midlife crisis start checking out other women. What they want is confirmation and attention, somebody to tell them that they still look great and somebody that could actually remind them how successful they are. Men suffering from this sudden lack of confidence often choose women that can't even be compared to their respectful wives. When it comes to reassuring our men how good they are, nothing works better than a divorced gold-digger on a mission to find a new daddy for her kids. They are silly creatures indeed! |
| Posted: 17 Mar 2011 09:10 AM PDT I'm definitely feeling the onset of spring where I live and the list I've provided below includes the top signs I've noticed lately. Of course the sudden lack of snow and assurance from the weatherman that spring is here are signs that everyone seems to notice! Here are 7 signs of spring for you to be on the lookout, in case you are wondering if it will ever show up in your neck of the woods! 7. Stir-crazy kidsThe kids start running in and out the front door more often when spring is near. There seems to be a larger quantity of kids present here as well. It's as if springtime causes kids to congregate in groups more, at least at our house anyways. 6. No more frosty morningsI don't miss scraping the windshield each morning. The frost on the grass was nice. The sunshine made the yard sparkle like it was coated with glitter, but I'd prefer no frost. I have to wait until the last frost is over and done with before I can begin planting my garden, so a lack of frost is a great thing in my opinion! 5. Warmer weatherWho doesn't get excited over warm weather? I'm not talking about scorching hot weather; I'm by no means ready for that! But, warm weather is always a plus in my book. I consider the weather to be warm when I don't have to don a thick coat to go outside. As long as I can comfortably wear long sleeves when I go outdoors, then I consider the weather to be warm. |

| 7 Ways to Soothe Skin Irritations … Posted: 17 Mar 2011 08:40 AM PDT Skin irritations can affect us in a variety of ways. They can come in the form of rashes, redness, itchiness and in some cases even pain. They can be caused due to allergic reactions, lack of hygiene or medication. Whenever you are faced with a skin irritation, you may be inclined to fixing the problem without any medicated creams ointments. Here are 7 ways to soothe skin irritations. 1. Ice cubesRubbing ice cubes over the affected area can be a tremendous soothing agent for your rash or redness. It numbs the irritated cells in that region and offers some relief from pain and itching. The best part about it is that it is easily available. Just head to your refrigerator and get your soothing agent. 2. Wash the area with a mild cleanserOne of the chief causes of skin irritation is bacteria and germs. So when you are faced with a rash or group of pimples, the first thing you should do is watch the area thoroughly. It is a good idea to use a mild cleanser as anything stronger than that can cause a further reaction and discomfort. 3. Drink waterIt is a well-known fact that when your skin is not getting enough water, it can break out. The skin irritation can be related to the lack of fluids in your system so drink plenty of water. Secondly, if the irritation persists, dehydrated skin is extremely difficult to treat. |
| Posted: 17 Mar 2011 08:12 AM PDT I adore Liam Neeson. Not only is he an amazing actor, he's also completely hot, one of only a few actors of his generation that has his kind of range and cache. He's played everyone from a Word War II profiteer turned hero to Obi Wan Kenobi's Jedi Master to — literally — a God. I can't wait to see his new movie, "Unknown," another action role for him. If you're a fan, too, it's time to study up and choose a favorite role or character. Here are 8 great Liam Neeson roles. 1. Qui-Gon Jin from the "Star Wars" movies
 2. Aslan in the "Narnia" movies
 3. Colonel Hannibal Smith from "The A-Team"

| Emma Watson is the New Face of Lancôme… Posted: 17 Mar 2011 06:43 AM PDT For nearly a week now, “Harry Potter” actress and overall cutie-pie Emma Watson has been teasing her Twitter followers about her new gig, and this week she finally told all: she’s the new face of Lancôme!
In a tweet on Monday she said:
I’m sure she’ll be perfectly lovely, with her fresh-faced, dewy-eyed look… and at 20, she’s the youngest person to model for the brand. As you can see in the photo, for the Lancôme shoot she wore a pink blazer, black tie, and sweet black bowler hat, but what you can’t see is her darling lace shorts. I love her new look, and I’m sure she’ll make a fantastic ambassador for the Lancôme brand! What do you think? Photo Credit: xposurephotos.com |
| 7 Reasons Not to Avoid the Mirror … Posted: 17 Mar 2011 06:10 AM PDT Ladies, I'm sure you've been there: you're not feeling great about yourself so you avoid the mirror. Not forever, but just until you've started to feel better. Not wanting to see your reflection is actually pretty common among women, and as long as it's just an 'every now and again' kind of thing, it's not that bad. But, girls, never wanting to look in the mirror is a serious problem, and one that signals not just dissatisfaction with body shape and size, but also the beginnings of dangerous denial. Looking ourselves in the eye isn't just about evaluating our appearance; it's about accepting who we are. On that note, I've put together a list of 8 reasons why you should stand in front of your reflection every morning. 1. PracticalityLike it or not ladies, turn out and appearance do make a difference. In your job or at school you're expected to present yourself well, and this just isn't possible without at least glancing in the mirror. Looking at your reflection is an important part of deciding whether an outfit is wearable or not, and, if for no other reason, this is, first and foremost, why you should do it. 2. Accept YourselfIn addition to helping you to decide which areas need work, being able to look calmly and directly at yourself in a full length mirror is also about taking ownership of your body, along with all of the problems you see with it. Accepting your reflection entails accepting responsibility for your own well being, and it is this which eventually will allow you move forward and become a healthier, happier person. 3. So You Know What Needs WorkIf you never look at yourself in the mirror, you can't have any real understanding of what state your body is in. If you feel yourself getting heavier, but you refuse to check it out by appraising your reflection, you're basically choosing the ostrich strategy and sticking your head in the sand. In this sense, looking in the mirror is actually the first step towards making positive changes in your life. Don't refuse to be introduced to your reflection ladies: get in front of that glass today and start work on the new you! |
| Comment of the day: 10 Words to Remember for a Healthy Romance… Posted: 17 Mar 2011 01:15 AM PDT How important is the word “Sorry” in a relationship? Here’s what one of our readers, Amy had to say on the 10 Words to Remember for a Healthy Romance, Amy: "Sorry" is an important one… Granted, being in love means never having to say your sorry, but it's a word that can be very difficult to say and difficult to admit fault… I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. Personally, I don’t think Amy is wrong at all. Can you imagine the resentment between a couple, not to mention how much longer each fight would go on for if not for this simple word? My motto is simple, if I’m wrong, I will apologize..maybe not in that moment but eventually, yes. It doesn’t take much and it does make a HUGE difference (as long as you mean it!) What is your take on the use of “sorry”. What other words are important to remember for a successful relationship? |
