| 8 Things That You Can’t Help Laughing At … Posted: 24 Mar 2011 11:16 AM PDT It seems to be deeply ingrained in human nature that we can't help laughing at inappropriate times. Sometimes it's nerves that make us giggle during an interview, or when meeting the future in-laws for the first time. There are so many things that make us laugh, even when it's generally not appropriate … 1. Someone StumblingWhy oh why do we find this funny? We wouldn't want everyone laughing at us if we took a tumble, so why is it so hilarious when it happens to someone else? It's even amusing when it happens to an unfortunate senior, until our 'good citizen' reflex kicks in and we realise that the correct response is to rush to their assistance. 2. FartingNow, I defy even the most solemn person to resist a snigger when somebody farts. It's just one of those things that makes our sense of humour regress to the level of a five-year-old's. And everyone loves a fart joke, even if they deny it. 3. PainLike falling over, pain is funny – when it happens to someone else. We put on a sympathetic face and enquire if they're okay, while desperately trying to suppress the urge to giggle. It might be a bit mean, but we just can't help it! |

| 7 Tips for Updating Your Look & Style … Posted: 24 Mar 2011 10:54 AM PDT With spring (hopefully!) on the way, it’s a great time to think about updating your look and style. You don’t have to totally revamp yourself like you may have done at the start of the new year, but a little updating is always a great idea. You’d be surprised at all the little things that will do the trick. In fact, some of these tips for updating your look and style are quite small, but they make a big impact. 1. Get a New ‘Do
If you’ve been wanting to do something new with your hair, now is the perfect time. You don’t have to get a drastic cut, unless that’s the kind of update you’re after, but can instead focus on something simpler – but still amazing. You can cut in layers or get a fringe of bangs. You can change the color of your hair, frost it, or get some highlights. If you’re really brave, you can also tell your stylist to do whatever he or she wants, as long as it looks good. 2. Buy One Trendy Item
If you’re like me, you’re sometimes wary of buying any clothing item that seems too trendy, just because I’m never sure if I’ll wear it enough to merit the price. The same goes for shoes, and I love shoes. So, to update your look, buy just one trendy thing – as long as it’s from a trend you like, of course. Be bold, whether it’s a pair of skinny jeans or shooties, and wear it like you own it. 3. Get a New Bra
What? I know, right? But this really can update your look. In fact, try treating yourself royally, and get a bra that is perfectly fitted. Get yourself measured and everything so you can buy something with all the proper support. You can get a bit daring as well, in terms of the style you choose. |
| Top 10 Reasons to Adopt a Dog … Posted: 24 Mar 2011 10:48 AM PDT There will always be plenty of breeders selling purebred puppies, but how many times will you get the chance to change the life of a dog who is nearing the end of his time. I’m talking about adopting a dog. I can’t think of a better way to make a difference in a dog’s life than to bring him into your family and share your life with him. Here are the top 10 reasons to adopt a dog that I can think of. 10. They make fantastic walking companionsIf you’ve recently taken up walking, but can’t seem to find anyone who wants to go with you, then you might want to think about adopting a dog. Of course there are many other aspects of owning a dog that need to be taken into consideration before you go through with the adoption. However, dogs make great walking partners and are always very enthusiastic about any type of exercise. Getting a dog might be just the motivation you need to keep up with your exercise routine. 9. You just might be saving the life of a very sweet dogNot all animals shelters are No-Kill shelters. Some dogs are kept up for adoption for a limited amount of time before they are eventually put down. Knowing that there are hundreds upon hundreds of dogs out there who will never find a good home always makes me so sad. If I had the land and funds to care for all the strays I found, I’d be thrilled! 8. You won’t be supporting puppy millsPuppy mills are some of the worst places I’ve ever seen. Poor little dogs stuck in small areas that smell horrible. These canines rarely have enough room to get any exercise at all and they often become neurotic. |
| 10 Things I Enjoy Doing During the Summer … Posted: 24 Mar 2011 10:48 AM PDT It feels like I've been waiting for summer to arrive for such a long time. As soon as the sun comes out and the weather turns warmer, I start thinking about at least 10 things I enjoy doing during the summer. I'm usually snapped back to reality once the weather decides to turn cold again for a week or so. I know summer will be here eventually and I'll be ready for it! 10. Going to yard salesI find the coolest things at yard sales. I try not to buy things that I can't use, so I tend to have something in mind that I'm searching for before stopping at a sale. It's fun just to browse around and look at everything too. I'm always amazed at what some people try to sell. 9. Exploring somewhere newThere are many parts of my state that I still haven't seen, as well as a number of surrounding states that I've merely passed through on my way to one of the coasts. Grabbing a map and heading out to explore some place new is a blast for the entire family. The kids seem to enjoy it more when they get to have a say in where the exploring is going to take place. 8. Traveling to see old friendsIt's always much easier to travel in the summer time to see friends. Most of my friends live many states away from me and I don't feel like braving the winter weather to visit them during the colder months. Summer time makes me feel more at ease when I'm driving across the country. If I have car trouble, I don't have to worry about freezing to death or being buried alive by a passing snowplow. |
| Posted: 24 Mar 2011 10:35 AM PDT Who are we kidding? Most of us ladies lead such hectic lives that we find little time for extras like exercise. We all know we should strive to be as healthy as possible. But let’s face it there are only twenty four hours in a day. Here are some ideas on how to sneak in time for exercise… because it’s really important! 1. Play with Your KidsPlaying with your children sounds like a feasible plan, however with the myriad of things always waiting to be done, playtime with the kids usually gets neglected. Set aside 20 minutes a day to play with the kids. They will love it and you will get some welcome exercise. Run around outside, play hop-scotch, or have a snowball fight — just keep moving! 2. Wake-Up Sleepy Head!Change your alarm clock to wake-up 30 minutes earlier. Devote that 30 minutes to exercise to a video, take a walk or work the treadmill. Do something active to get you moving and jump start your day… you won’t miss the half-hour of sleep, and you’ll feel invigorated and ready for the day! 3. After the Work DayWhen supper is finished and the kids are in bed, spend a few minutes exercising before you shower and go to bed. Not only will you benefit from the exercise but you will sleep better as well. Yoga is great in the evenings, as one idea. |
| 7 Great Books to Read over the Holidays … Posted: 24 Mar 2011 09:47 AM PDT I'm going to skip the long introduction today, girls, because we're going to talk about books today and, as you know, these conversations tend to get quite long. Now, I've decided to suggest some of my all time favorite books just in case you're wondering what to read over the holidays. This list will consist of some of the most popular and even classic books you can certainly find in your local library so, don't worry, there will be no need to buy anything and spend more than you would want. Well, here we go – this is my list of good holiday literature: 1. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
You will laugh reading this book, I'll tell you that! Douglas Adams has actually created a whole new imaginary world and found a very modern way to present it too! Witty remarks will make your eyes water and all those funny comparisons and strange terms are definitely something you'll get to use in a conversation later on. You want to know what happens when the entire space world starts colliding with the rational thought of a common Earthling who, up until a moment ago, had a planet to live on and some more common problems to worry about? Want to know what happens when the Earth goes "POUF!" in the first chapter? Well, I hope you have a lot of free time on your hands because this book isn't really the shortest one out there. 2. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
One of the most amazing books I've ever read! In case you've somehow managed to "miss it", definitely plan a trip to the library and rent it over the holidays. If you are a fast reader like me, this book probably won't take more than a couple of hours of your precious time, so you can decide to read it even if you know your holidays are going to be really busy. Now, I'm not sure how most people saw this book but reading it made me appreciate all the wonderful people I get to call my loved ones a bit more. It made me happy and made me realize that already have all the alchemy I need. |
| Posted: 24 Mar 2011 09:15 AM PDT For those of you that are alone, this does not mean that you cannot have fun. You do not need to have someone next to you in order to have a good time. In the posting below, I am going to give you 7 things to do solo … 7. Dance Around in Your RoomOh yes, put together a nice playlist for yourself and feel free to dance around in your room. This is something that is fun to do, plus it is a great exercise. You don't need anyone beside you to dance – this is something you can do by yourself. As a reminder, there is no need for you to be shy right now! 6. Dye Your HairI do this one solo all the time. I don't need any help with dying my hair and I get many comments on it. People ask me where I get my hair done and when I tell them I do it myself in the comfort of my own home, they look so surprised. 5. Cook a Fancy MealSome people will only cook a fancy meal if they have someone to share it with. Do you know what I say? I say that it is okay to fix yourself a fancy meal. In fact, it might even be better this way, because then you can focus on the things you enjoy. |
| Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:38 AM PDT Google is one of those amazing applications that keeps evolving and innovating to keep us all hooked. What started out as a simple search engine has now become a global phenomenon that most of us turn to whenever we need anything. Here are 8 reasons why I love Google. 1. Awesome web searchOf course, the number one reason for Google's greatness is its super fast and extraordinarily thorough web search. There is something so reassuringly familiar about using Google's search engine facility. The first page of results is usually all you'll need and the little summary following the main hit is ideal to decide if a site is click worthy. 2. Google mail storageWhen Gmail first came out, what made it so unique was its massive mail storage. Cleaning out one's mailbox became a thing of the past. There was literally so much space that all mails could be retained without any fears of blocked mailboxes and returned mails. 3. Easy to find picturesThe Google 'image' search utility provides all users the opportunity to find the pictures we need without having to get into any specific clip art or image website. It's so easy to do and generates so many results that we end up with an array of options to choose from, ideal for any work or home project. |

| 7 Things to Say and Do When the Feeling’s Not Mutual … Posted: 24 Mar 2011 06:15 AM PDT He’s Just Not that into You is more than just a star-studded movie and comedic book. It happens in real life all the time. Maybe a guy you really don’t like asks you out, or maybe you go out with someone only to discover, after the first day, that it’s just not going to work out. Either way, you typically want to deal with the situation as delicately as possible. You may want to try one or more of these 7 things to say and do when the feeling’s just not mutual. 1. Don’t AnswerIn some cases, this is admittedly harsh – but then again, in some situations, harshness is necessary to get your point across. If you’ve ever been hit on by an honest to goodness jerk who simply can’t take a hint, you understand why this might be the right approach. If someone is texting you or sending you Facebook messages, trying to hook up or arrange a date, and he or she just won’t stop, you do have the option of simply not answering – especially if you’ve tried to say "no" before and it’s just not sinking in. 2. Tell the TruthThis is typically the best option at your disposable. Yeah, with some people, it just won’t work, but with most, a little honesty goes a long way. You don’t have to be mean or rude about it, but you can still be truthful about your feelings. Just tell the guy or girl, that you really don’t feel that way about him, that you don’t want to go out on a date. It might hurt, but it’s better than a lie. 3. Let’s Just Be FriendsIn line with telling the truth – kind of – you can always tell the person who likes you that you just want to be friends. This is maybe the worst ever thing to hear, but the thing is, if you actually do want to be friends with the person who likes you, that could actually lead to a relationship later. You never know. Anyway, if you do really like the person, just not like that, then this may be the best option. Just try not to sound patronizing. |
| 7 Tasty Snacks that Won’t Pile on the Pounds … Posted: 24 Mar 2011 06:06 AM PDT If you're dieting, ladies, then you'll know that snacking can be a real problem. While everyone else around you simply reaches for a bar chocolate or a bag of crisps, you're left picking your way through a lettuce salad, and, unsurprisingly, this doesn't leave you feeling great. In order to avoid those sensations of jealous rage whenever your friends are tucking into delicious treats, I've put together a list of healthy snacks that are satisfying and don't taste terrible. 1. Olives
A craving for salt is very common among dieters but, unfortunately, almost all foods with added salt are pretty fattening. Instead of breaking your healthy eating rules and grabbing a packet of crisps, pack a few olives into your lunch. They make a tasty mid-afternoon snack and are naturally salty so they'll satisfy that craving. 2. Sushi
On a diet, you can get away with about 6 pieces of maki with no mayo and taken with light soy sauce. Sushi is a delicious, light and wheat-free lunchtime meal, and made with tuna or salmon, it's packed full of omega fatty acids and necessary proteins. If you're keen on sashimi, you can pile your plate with a whole lot more since without the rice, sushi makes an even more effective slimming snack. 3. Popcorn
Contrary to popular belief, popcorn actually has a low glycemic index (or GI) which means it takes a long time for your body to break it down. It won't give you the same intense energy kick-and-crash effect that you get after you've eaten crisps, and it tastes just a good as its potato-ey snack-relatives. Don't overload your popcorn with salt, however, as this will counteract the health benefits. |
| Gwen Stefani Donates $1 Million to Japan Relief Effort… Posted: 24 Mar 2011 03:47 AM PDT Musician Gwen Stefani has donated $1 million to Save the Children’s relief effort in Japan, proving that she’s not just another pretty face — she’s also a humanitarian.
Stefani joins a growing number of celebrities across the globe doing what they can to help those in need after an earthquake and resulting tsunami wiped out entire towns and villages in northern Japan earlier this month. Those celebs include Sandra Bullock (who donated $1 million to the Red Cross), Lady Gaga, and even Charlie Sheen. Aside from her generous donation, Stefani has also designed a tee shirt that her band, No Doubt, will sell on its website — and proceeds from the sale will also go to relief efforts in Japan. In a press release on the No Doubt website Stefani encourages others to donate what they can to the relief effort, and says:

| 7 Special Surprises For Your Grandparents … Posted: 23 Mar 2011 12:18 PM PDT Grandparents are special. Thy shower us with love and affection and ask for little in return. It feels really good to bring a smile on their faces and to make them happy and it takes such little effort. Here are some special surprises for your grandparents. 1. Surprise them with a visitVery often, in the busy schedules of our lives, we find very little time for our families, especially our grandparents. One of the special surprises for your grandparents that you can plan is to visit them when they least expect it. They are likely to be overjoyed to see you and will pamper you to no end. 2. Send them to their favorite restaurantIf your grandparents live too far away and visiting them unexpectedly is not an option, send them a thoughtful card with coupons to their favorite restaurant. They will not only get an unexpected outing, but will think of you fondly for your thoughtfulness. 3. Send them a family calendarGet a blank calendar and post pictures of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren on each of the pages. Mark out all the important family dates like birthdays and anniversaries. Have the younger members of the family write out a message to them on every page. Old people often forget dates, but your calendar will ensure that your grandparents are a part of every important occasion in the family, even if they can't be present. |
| 7 Causes of Emotional Eating … Posted: 23 Mar 2011 12:04 PM PDT Have you ever had a day where you wanted to drown your sorrows in chocolate ice cream? Most of us have had those days when we just cannot seem to stop eating, but very few of us actually understand what triggers emotional eating. If you can identify the reason you are suddenly eating everything in your house, you can take the steps needed to fix the problem. Here are 7 causes of emotional eating that might be triggering your binges. 1. StressOne of the most common reasons we tend to start eating is stress. The physical effects of emotional stress often mirror the effects of physical labor in our brains, so our body tells us that we need to eat in order to replace the calories we are burning. Instead of reaching for a bag of chips when you start to feel stress, try to force yourself to relax. You should take yoga, go for a long walk, or soak in the bath tub. 2. LonelinessBy nature, humans are social creatures. We do not like to be alone. When we are lonely we tend to feel like something is missing. We use food to help fill the void. The best way to cancel out the loneliness is to go out and do something. The chances are pretty good that your local community center will offer some type of class where you will be able to learn a new skill and meet new people. 3. BoredomFor some reason when we are bored, we tend to reach for something to eat. This is probably one of the easiest forms of emotional eating to fix. Instead of grabbing a sandwich, get outside and do something. The world is full of things that you can do that will engage your mind and make you forget your appetite. |
