| 7 Ways to Prevent the Loss of Your Eyelashes … Posted: 31 Mar 2011 10:47 AM PDT This blog is dedicated to the Better Half, who has ridiculously long and gorgeous eyelashes – but also has a habit of picking at them in times of stress, which is but one way to lose your eyelashes. There are many reasons your eyelashes can begin to disappear or fall out, however, some of them natural, a lot of them heartbreaking, and a number of them preventable. Here are some ways to prevent the loss of your eyelashes if you have this problem. 1. Figure Out the CauseAs I mentioned, there are many causes behind the loss of eyelashes, so you have to first figure out what’s doing it. It can sometimes be related to different medical conditions, such as alopecia. Certain hormonal imbalances and even hypothyroidism can cause the problem as well, so if it’s something serious, you need to figure it out, see your doctor, and find out what you can do. Many times, however, this problem is related to personal habits and can be prevented. 2. Assess Your AllergiesIf you’re allergic to the makeup you use, it can actually cause your eyelashes to thin or even fall out completely. If you’re using something you haven’t tried before and this is just starting to happen, your makeup could be the problem. Sometimes, using hypoallergenic makeup can significantly improve the problem. 3. Stay Away from WaterproofingWaterproof mascaras are great because you can’t cry your way out of them. However, it is actually because of their durability that they can sometimes lead to the loss of your eyelashes. It takes forever to clean off this kind of mascara, and you can end up pulling out your eyelashes. Either try a different mascara, or find a makeup remover specifically designed to take off waterproof mascara. |
| Posted: 31 Mar 2011 10:40 AM PDT Magicians have mesmerized us for generations. These stupendous illusionists have created some of the most fantastic tricks that have made us actually consider that magic is real. No matter how much we think and rethink it, we just cannot imagine how it was performed. Yet it happened right in front of our eyes. Here are 8 popular magic tricks. 1. The linked ringsThis popular trick consists of the magician holding two separate metal rings in each hand. The rings are identical and completely unattached in any way. As the magician performs his trick, he links the rings. The audience is left spellbound as the rings were hard metal – how did he do it? 2. The sawing in halfThere are so many variations of this trick. The assistant is placed on a table and sawed in half. The assistant is placed in a box and the box is sawed in half. Sometimes the magician saws his own body in half. There are so many variations and we love them all. The danger and risk associated with the trick is what keeps us hooked. 3. LevitatingThis is another popular illusion that magicians are constantly performing. It usually consists of the magician or assistant lying on a table with a blanket covering his or her body. As the trick is performed the subject appears to levitate in the air. Modern illusionists are now displaying this trick with the subject in a vertical standing position and without any blanket, levitating. |
| Posted: 31 Mar 2011 10:31 AM PDT When you are dating a guy and love is in the air, there are some things you can do in order to draw him closer to you. Love is something you have to feed. If you let it just sit there and expect it to grow on its own, it won't happen. Below, I am going to give you 7 ways to draw him closer … 7. Don't be Money HungrySome girls out there are just so money hungry. Some track guys down and use them just because they have extra money to spend. Ladies, more and more guys are starting to catch on to this little trick. While some will fall for the trick, there are others who knows the game. So, if you would like to draw him closer to you, make sure you do not use him just for his money. In fact, feel free to pay for some date nights here and there. 6. Let Him Know He's the Only OneGuys enjoy hearing that they are the only one. They enjoy hearing that you do not plan on going out and finding any other guy. So, if you want to draw him closer to you, remind him how he is the only one on Earth for you. 5. Tell Them How Hard They WorkWhen a guy works hard, they enjoy hearing that they work hard. So, I believe it would be a good idea to tell the guy how hard they work. |
| 8 Animals That You Don’t Want To Cross Paths With in the Wild … Posted: 31 Mar 2011 10:23 AM PDT Avid adventurists and outdoors enthusiasts are known for taking risks. For the loving the unpredictability of the wild, and letting the cards fall where they may. Here are some animals that you definitely don't want the cards to drop on. 8. Skunk
Skunks ARE terrifiying in the worst kind of way. They may not threaten your life, but they can definitely ruin it. Think about how bad it is driving over a dead one. Now think about smelling like that yourself, and don't forget that the stench is impossible to remove. Ugh… 7. Bees, Hornets, etc. in mass amounts
If any of you have seen My Girl, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. Even if you're not allergic a swarm of these guys can ruin you. No one wants to be that guy in Candy Man with bees flying out of him. 6. Scorpions
Small, but terrifying. Just seeing one isn't bad, but the thought of zipping into your sleeping bad, ready to cozy up for the night only to get stung on the ankle by one of these poisonous mini-monstrosities is just one more reason to ALWAYS check that bag before getting in. |
| 7 Unexpected Ways to Make Cash … Posted: 31 Mar 2011 10:22 AM PDT Everyone can do with a little extra cash, especially in these days of economic difficulties. When regular means of making cash become difficult to come by, it becomes important to think of some new ways of making some cash. Here is a list of some rather unexpected ways to make cash. 1. Have a gold partyYou can have a gold party where you can invite your friends to get their unused pieces of jewelry to be appraised by and sold to an appraiser and merchant. Everyone has a forgotten, unused or unfashionable jewelry that they can do without and this is one of the most unexpected ways to make cash. 2. Have a garage saleIf you look around your house, you are sure to find a lot of stuff that is in good condition, but you hardly ever use. It is better to give this away at a highly discounted price and make some money rather than keep it around. Most people can hardly resist a bargain and as long as you ask for the right price, you will be able to sell most of the stuff you put up for sale. 3. Have a virtual saleIf you do not live in an area where a physical sale is feasible, have a virtual sale. Put up stuff on websites like EBay and Craigslist for sale. You may even get lucky and earn more than you imagined when people start bidding for your stuff. This is one of the best unexpected ways to make cash. |
| Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:57 AM PDT In summer it's important to eat good, healthy foods. You don't want to pile on the pounds any time of year, but weight gain and extreme heat are difficult to deal with together. In order to make sure you ladies stay looking slim and trim, I've put together a refreshing list of 9 healthy summer snacks. 1. Watermelon
Watermelon is the original summer food. It's packed with vitamins, it's cool and it's super hydrating. Dig in for a tasty, refreshing treat: yum! 2. Banana-sicle
Pop a few bananas in the freezer in preparation for a scorching day. When you take them out, they'll be cold and crunchy and totally delicious. This is a super alternative to ice-cream ladies, and it's chock full of potassium and a whole bunch of other nutrients. 3. Sweet Baby Carrots and Humus
This is a great refreshing between-meals snack. Try to get those super-small rounded carrots – they taste so good! Humus is full of proteins and carrots are a great source of B vitamins so while you're filling up, your body will be thanking you! |
| 7 Ways To Secure Your Facebook Page … Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:49 AM PDT Facebook can be a helpful way to keep up with friends and share information. However, in some situations, sharing too much information can have horrible repercussions. From hackers to potential employers, unless you have secured your Facebook page, you don't really know who has access to your details. If you haven't already assessed your Facebook privacy settings, below are a few ways to help secure your Facebook Page. 1. Choose a Strong PasswordThis is probably the simplest and most effective tip. To make it harder for others to hack into your account, choose a password that features letters in both lower and uppercase as well as a few numerals. With any password, it is recommended that you change passwords every month, and use different passwords for different accounts. 2. Set Your Privacy SettingsPrivacy settings are broken up into 4 categories on Facebook, so it's important that you spend time going through each one. The majority of options come under the 'Sharing on Facebook' banner. Unless you want everyone on the internet to have access to your page, then it's probably best to set most of your sharing settings to 'friends only'. You can also decide whether you want your page to come up through search engines. 3. Keep Personal Details To A MinimumIt's important to think twice about what you 'really' need to post on your page. I'd advise against putting your address on your page. If you make your birthday visible, avoid writing your year of birth. It's this kind of information that makes identity theft a possibility. If the privacy of your page is compromised, who knows who might be able to access this information? |
| Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:43 AM PDT When it comes to computer programs, I always find it much easier to know what I'm getting myself into when I can find someone who knows a bit about the programs I'm thinking about getting. Here are 7 useful computer programs that my husband and I or friends of ours have used and have found to be very beneficial. Maybe you'll find something that can replace a current program you've had difficulty with. You'll have to make sure that the downloadable program is compatible with your current operating system. 7. PC DecrapifierNot only is the name hilarious, but it actually does what it says. It gets rid of all the crap that has built up on your PC. This is perfect for people who are new to Windows or who just recently became a computer owner that has Windows installed on it. You can get rid of junky software and leave space for the new stuff. All you have to do is download the program and run it. There's no need to install it at all, so it's super easy to use. Follow the prompts and you're on your way to decrapifying your PC in no time at all! 6. FirefoxI think Firefox beats Internet Explorer any day. Firefox is faster and safer than IE. You can even customize this web browser and quickly manage bookmarks with a click of your mouse. It is one of the most user-friendly web browsers available, in my opinion. 5. Macrium ReflectIf you don't currently have a Windows backup system installed or available, then Macrium Reflect might be a good idea. Features available with the free edition of Macrium Reflect include; CD/DVD writing support, network support, BartPE Rescue CD plug-in, XML backup definitions, a scheduler, the ability to access images with Windows Explorer, and disk imaging. However, this software only works with Vista or XP. |
| 10 Things Guys Have Fun Doing … Posted: 31 Mar 2011 08:19 AM PDT It seems like guys can always find some form of entertainment and the older they get, the more involved their idea of fun becomes. For instance, my teenage boys enjoy playing video games, while my husband would much rather be outside working in his wood shop. I've thought about all the things my house full of guys enjoy doing and have listed them below. See what you think about my list of 10 things guys have fun doing. 10. Racing carsGuys seem to love anything to do with speed and ways to get a huge adrenaline rush. Racing cars definitely falls into both of these categories. The next best thing to racing cars is attending an actual car race. 9. Playing sportsMost guys tend to be very sports oriented. They enjoy the rough and tumble aspect of sports. The more gruesome a sporting event is the more draw there is. American football and rugby can both be very brutal, but that's what guys seem to crave. 8. Building thingsConstructing even the smallest objects allow guys show just how handy they can be. From building a model airplane to putting an addition on the house, creating something out of nothing makes guys feel very useful. |
| 5 Fictional Characters I’d Love to Have Coffee With … Posted: 31 Mar 2011 07:00 AM PDT Have you ever read a book and think that this character or that would be a hoot to meet in real life? Now I have not read all the books I want to read but I have a long list of fictional characters I’d love to meet. This includes Gandalf, Darcy, Heathcliff, Odd Thomas, Scout Finch, Dream, Severus Snape, Ron Weasley, and so many more. (I’ll pass up a chance to meet a certain sparkly vampire, thank you very much). But to narrow it down, I have here 5 fictional characters I’d love to have coffee with. A couple of them are not human and will most likely not be allowed in any Starbucks branch but I’ll still invite them for a good conversation over a cup of steaming java. 1. Death (The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett)
Photo Credit: Caro’s Lines Death in the Discworld Series is perhaps one of the most interesting characters I’ve had the pleasure of “meeting.” He may be described as your typical Grim Reaper but he is actually a very nice fellow. For a soul collector, I mean. I reckon he’d be a wonderful companion for discussing the many strange and indubitably human things that humans do. Death would be a fun coffee date if I am having some questions that are philosophical in nature but only in the mood for gnomic and witty answers. 2. Anathema Device (Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett)I like Pratchett, sue me. Actually, I’d rather you don’t. I’ll need to have coffee with Anathema Device first so that I can ask her if this imaginary litigation would result in my favor. Aside from the fact that she has front seat view to the future, Anathema is one of the fictional characters I’d love to have coffee with because spending some time with a wise and no-nonsense woman is essential. In my opinion, anyway. 3. Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee)
Photo Credit: Dunechaser Atticus is one character I truly admire. There are times when I go to a cafe simply to sit and read a book. Atticus loves to read so I think having a quiet time with him in a cafe would be a treat. 4. Bartimaeus (Bartimaeus series by Jonathan Stroud)Because he is hilarious and he will be a fun “creature” to watch people with. Let’s forget the fact that I can’t possibly summon him and he will most likely be in foul mood if he appears in this world only to have coffee with me. Not that he’d be able to drink the dark liquid. But let’s say he’s in an agreeable disposition… A coffee date with him would involve me asking him all sorts of questions about the magical creatures the he can see but humans can’t. 5. Georgia Nicolson (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison)Photo Credit: Alex Dram Georgia is a hoot. She will be a great girl to hang out with if I am in need of a fun girl time. With her colorful (puppy)love life, an afternoon in a cafe will not be enough. In fact, it would be nice to be invited to her home to meet her family, too. I love cats so I’m pretty sure Angus will be kind to me. I hope. This is a rather short list for someone who loves to read, I know. I had temporary amnesia when I was writing this post. Now it’s your turn. Tell me, any fictional characters you’d love to have coffee with? Top Photo Credit: myam |
| Glee’s Lea Michele Okay after Accident… Posted: 31 Mar 2011 06:09 AM PDT Early this morning, Lea Michele, star of the popular TV show “Glee,” was involved in a car accident… but no worries! Her rep tells UsMagazine.com that’s she’s okay.
Michele, 24, was walking down Melrose Avenue on her way home from work when, at 2:00 a.m., she was hit by a carload of drunken girls. They recognized her, told her they were drunk, then sped away. Michele, shaken but uninjured, had the presence of mind to write down the car’s license plate number and called police. I’m so glad she’s not hurt! It could have ended a lot worse… what were those girls thinking?! |
| 7 Female Nobel Prize Winners … Posted: 31 Mar 2011 03:13 AM PDT Every year, Nobel Prizes are awarded for Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Economics, Literature and Peace. They are decided upon by a Scandinavian Committee instigated by Swedish dynamite inventor Gustav Nobel and they recognise cultural and scientific advances. Immensely prestigious, the female Nobel Prize Winners are amongst the most exalted names in world history including Albert Einstein, Theodore Roosevelt, Rudyard Kipling, John Steinbeck and Martin Luther King. Here are 7 thoroughly deserving female Nobel Prize recipients. 1. Marie Curie
 2. Mother TheresaProbably the most famous of all female recipients, Mother Theresa was presented with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. If you want to feel inspired, here's an extract from her acceptance speech. “I choose the poverty of our poor people. But I am grateful to receive (the Nobel) in the name of the hungry, the naked, the homeless, of the crippled, of the blind, of the lepers, of all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared-for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone.” 3. Irène CurieObviously the super genes run in the Curie family because Irène, daughter of Pierre and Marie continued their work with radioactive elements and received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935. |

Marie Curie is also the only female to have ever won two awards. In 1903 she was co-winner with husband Pierre of the prize for physics in recognition of the extraordinary service by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel. She then won the prize for Chemistry in 1911, this time without hubby, in recognition of her discovery of the elements radium and polonium.
