| 9 Ways to Deal with Annoying House Guests … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 10:02 AM PST Unfortunately, with annoying house guests, you are not able to call the exterminator. Therefore, you have to learn how to deal with them. I know, I know, you don't want to, but before you know it, it'll all be over. In the meantime, I am going to give you 9 ways to deal with annoying house guests … 9. Be HonestIf there is something that you do not like that your house guest is doing, then just be honest with them. We all know that in the end, honesty really does pay off. 8. Plan as Many Activities as Possible That Take Place Away from your HomeThis is always a good idea. When you know the guests will be around and you find them annoying, you could plan as many events away from the home as possible. Perhaps your guests would enjoy a night out on the town? 7. Avoid Arguments with Your GuestsIt is especially important that you avoid getting into arguments with your guests. Arguing back with them will only make the argument continue. When a potential argument arises, just walk away. |

| 7 Tasty Uses for Candy Canes … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 09:19 AM PST Candy canes are one of my all-time favorite holiday sweets, but they're good for so much more than just hanging on the tree. Why not get a little creative? You can use them to make almost everything a little more festive… here are 8 tasty uses for candy canes… 1. Cocoa stirrer
Make a mug of your favorite hot cocoa, then add a candy cane to the cup to give the cocoa a cool, minty flavor. You can also just hang the mini-candy canes on the edge of a cocoa mug as a pretty garnish when serving cocoa to your friends. Yum! 2. Cookie or brownie ingredientWhy not add crumbled peppermint candy canes to your favorite brownies or cookies? The canes will give the baked treats a hint of peppermint flavor, and a pretty red and white holiday decoration. 3. Grown-up drink swizzle stickIf you're planning to drink a little Bailey's and coffee, or just about any other hot adult beverage, use a candy cane as a garnish or a swizzle stick! Candy canes also come in more flavors than just mint, so you can add lemon or cherry flavor, too! |
| Posted: 28 Dec 2010 09:08 AM PST Nature can produce some pretty nasty weather conditions, hurricanes being one of the most destructive and lengthy types of storms afflicting some coastal states. I've seen the devastation caused by hurricane Katrina first hand and have friends and family living in areas where hurricanes are a common occurrence. I hope you will find these 8 hurricane survival tips useful should you ever need them. 8. Listen to the news
The news is meant to keep you informed about weather conditions and for supplying you with any alerts that may save your life. I'd invest in an all-weather radio that doesn't rely solely on batteries. There are crank radios that run on batteries, as well as a crank system that can be used when the batteries run out of juice. It might also be helpful to have a radio that not only tells the news, but that can also be used to contact emergency services when the phone lines quit working. 7. Have an evacuation procedure in place
It's much easier to have an evacuation plan and not use it then to need one and not know what to do. Practice the evacuation procedure with family members so that each of you knows exactly what to do. It might seem like a simple process at the time, but carrying out the procedure with a clear mind during a hurricane is completely different. It's often hard to think straight in the face of danger, especially when you are worried about your family's safety. 6. Know where the nearest storm shelter is located
Larger cities tend to have designated storm shelters that have been built specifically for use during severe storms. Familiarizing yourself on the proximity of a storm shelter near you will help ease your mind when hurricane season hits. You might be able to assist someone else as well by knowing where to find the storm shelter during a natural disaster emergency. |
| 7 Best Things About Facebook … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 08:57 AM PST I have very little extra time, but the time I do have I tend to find myself spending it on Facebook. When I first joined, I found myself sucked into this social networking site every free moment I could find. Since the newness has worn off, I'm able to better manage my time spent on Facebook and I greatly enjoy all it has to offer. Here are what I feel to be the 7 best things about Facebook. 7. It's easy to navigate
I've come across many websites that leave me sitting there with my hand on the mouse, wondering where to go. If I end up getting severely frustrated, I quickly exit the site. Facebook is extremely easy to get around on and I never once was confused about how to find something I was looking for. 6. I can keep in touch with all my friends
I have friends in other states and don't always get a chance to call them to catch up on past events. Thanks to Facebook, I don't have to spend money on a phone call. I can go online at anytime of the day and peruse through friends' photo albums and see what their wall posts say. I can easily send them a message, even just to say a quick 'hello'. 5. Sharing photos between friends and family is a painless process
Making albums and sharing them with everyone takes just a few minutes of my time. Browsing for pictures that I've downloaded on my computer and then putting these photos in an album involves a few clicks of the mouse. I can delete these albums at any time or add more pictures into an existing album with little difficulty. |
| 8 Interesting Wedding Traditions … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 08:56 AM PST Wedding traditions differ from country to country and although some may be present in the whole area or even continent, some can indeed seem quite unusual. However, there are always some traditions that have a deeper, symbolical meaning that transcends religions, borders and even continents. These traditions are fun, romantic and easy to incorporate in almost any wedding theme. So, here they are and, if you like them, feel free to use them for your wedding. 1. Something old, something new……something borrowed something blue and a gold sixpence in her shoe. Actually, there's more to it than just a good rhyme – this interesting tradition that is still being followed in many countries dates back to Victorian times. But why borrowed and why blue, why that gold sixpence should be in your shoe? Well, a new thing should symbolize a new beginning, an object you borrow must come from a happily married woman so you would be happy too, blue is the symbol of love while old represents your old life and your family. Sixpence, of course, stands for wealth of both financial and emotional nature. But, let me tell you an interesting variation of "sixpence in a shoe" tradition that's very popular in villages in my country – a bride is supposed to pretend her shoe is too big and the best man is supposed to put money into the shoe until she says the shoe finally fits. 2. Money danceSome say money dance is rude, tacky and designed for lower classes, some love it and think of it as a perfect way to spend more time with their guests and collect some extra cash for the honeymoon. But, what exactly a money dance presumes? Well, the modern version of it is the one that lets the male guests dance with the bride and the female guests dance with the groom– each guest is supposed to pin some money onto the bride's or groom's clothes or put it in the basket/scarf/bag brought out for this purpose. Many cultures support the tradition of giving money to the newlyweds, so I honestly see no reason why not to go with it. |
| 9 Things to Do At Least Once Before You Die … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 08:55 AM PST Everybody has a Bucket List, even if it’s only in the back of your mind. Nobody wants to think about death, of course, but when I think about a Bucket List, I think of the items on it as things that help you celebrate your life and really live it. That being said, here are some things I think everyone should try to do at least once in their lives! 1. Continent Hopping
The world really is big, beautiful, and vast, and I think a lot of people – myself included – limit themselves about the areas they intend to visit. Like, I want to visit Europe, no question, but I rarely stop to think about all the other continents. An item on every Bucket List should be to visit all seven continents. 2. Learn a Language
Now, here, I don’t mean those four years of French or Spanish you took in high school and don’t remember now. Furthermore, you definitely shouldn’t limit yourself to learning just one foreign language, but that’s a great start. After all, you’ll need some help when you’re visiting so many different countries! 3. The Wonders of the World
There are so many Wonders of the World – how many are there now, eight, nine? I think everyone should try to visit at least one Wonder that isn’t in their home country. It gives you the opportunity to see something awe inspiring and to learn about a different culture. |
| Posted: 28 Dec 2010 08:37 AM PST I'm one of those OCD-organized people who's not content unless everything in my life is perfectly planned and written on a calendar. I keep my "big" one in my handbag, my school planner in my backpack, the family calendar on the fridge, and a reference calendar on the wall in my office. Every December, I look forward to choosing new calendars to help me keep organized (and happy) and this year there are so many to choose from! It seems that there's a calendar for every hobby, interest, and celebrity… here are 8 great wall calendars. 1. Erte Studio 2011 Calendar
 2. National Geographic Lighthouses 2011 Calendar
 3. Ansel Adams 2011 Calendar

| 10 Ways to Change Your Life in 30 Days … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 08:13 AM PST It might sound silly to think that even the smallest transitions can have a positive and life-long effect. But you need to start somewhere – and oftentimes the large, looming aspects of change can be terrifying. So, start simple! Keep your life, its needs and demands and your budget under consideration when considering these 10 suggestions to begin positive alterations to your life. 1. Grab a water bottleThe standard is eight-ten glasses of water a day – more, if you're an athletic female. Purchase one of those giant water bottles, set it on your desk and fill it up two-three times per day. Also, NO MORE BOTTLED WATER! The little you help yourself, you can help the planet as well. If your local tap water is horrible, then invest in refillable spring water jugs or a water cooler. 2. Slow down! Most of us always seem to be in a rush. And unfortunately, family schedules, meetings and traditional work hours dictate this. You'd be surprised how seemingly simple stressors can shave years off your life. But you can make strides in relaxation by starting small. Put meditation recordings on your iPod if you need to distance yourself from road rage. Start saying "no." Whether it be multi-tasking or driving, take a deep breath and slow down. 3. Put down the smart phoneIn this hyper-connected world, it is easy to get caught up for hours online with needless entertainment or continuation of work beyond office hours. Start absorbing the life around you – its sights, sounds and most importantly, the people you love. If only for a few hours, turn the ringer off. Stop playing games. And quit incessantly checking your email. The status updates will still be there the next time you log in. |
| 15 Ways to Declutter Your Mind … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:27 AM PST Clutter is not just something that can be found in your home or office. Clutter can also be found in your mind. You shouldn't be surprised, though. With all the thoughts and information that are fed to you, it is certainly no wonder that your mind can also be cluttered. If you feel like your mind is about to explode from information and thought overload, then you should take time to declutter it. 1. Breathe
Something as simple as deep breathing can help clear your mind. Take time throughout your day to relax and just feel your breath going in and out of your body. 2. Write Tasks and Ideas
All your tasks and errands get jumbled up in your head causing confusion. Writing down a to-do list for the day is a great way to combat this mind clutter. You can also do the same for ideas and thoughts that pop into your head. You no longer have to worry about forgetting things because you have already written them down. 3. Journal
Many people find journaling effective in controlling mind clutter. Journaling can be your outlet for thoughts and emotions that you feel you can't share with other people. |
| 10 Unique Themed Hotels from Around the World … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 01:46 AM PST I've read about some unusual hotels in my lifetime. The ones listed below are very unique indeed. I'd never come across any of these 10 unique themed hotels from around the world. I hope you enjoy reading about them and maybe even get the chance to stay in at least one of them someday. I thought they each were amazing in their own special way. 10. Taprobane Island
Photo Credit: See Sri Lanka, Feel Sri Lanka This is an extremely small hotel that only consists of 5 en-suite bedrooms. There are also 5 staff members to assist you with whatever you need. The little hotel situated on Taprobane Island was built during the 1920s. The land surrounding the hotel consists of little more than 2 acres of tropical wonder. This island hotel is located in Sri Lanka and surrounded by the Indian Ocean. Most visitors to the hotel never leave the island until they are ready to check out of their hotel room. 9. Daspark Hotel
Photo Credit: andreas strauss Have you ever gotten the urge to sleep in a drainpipe? Me neither. However, these rooms do look rather interesting. Each room consists of a bed, a lamp, and a shelf alongside the bed. There are small round windows in the top of the drain pipe to allow a bit of natural light in and a door on one end of the pipe to exit and enter through. That's about it for these hotel rooms in Austria. The nice thing about these rooms is that you are allowed to pay what you can afford. There's no set price to stay in one of these drainpipe rooms. 8. The Angsana Velavaru in Ocean Villas
Photo Credit: Ibrahim Fayaz Each of the two-story villas off the island of Velavaru are suspended in the air above the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. The villas are built up out of the water so that tropical fish can be seen swimming underneath the deck. The Maldives consist of a cluster of islands in which these ocean villas are placed. They are a little more than a mile away from the island of Velavaru and look more like a small community rather than rentable villas. |
| 7 Most Annoying Things about Facebook … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 01:36 AM PST Melanie’s recent post on annoying Facebook users inspired me to vent about the particular aspects of the networking site that drive me crazy. I resisted using Facebook for the longest time and now I’m as hooked as the millions of other users. Still, a lot of things about the site wear on my nerves; these are the top 7 things I find most annoying. 1. Inappropriate Suggestions
I’m not even talking about suggestions to befriend complete strangers. I’m talking about the uncanny ability Facebook has to suggest the most inappropriate people from your past. For instance, Facebook recently suggested this guy I knew when I was very young and very stupid. I was very, very infatuated with him for something like six years before realizing he was an awful, awful person to crush on – and now, suddenly, bam! He’s friends with my entire family and Facebook thinks we need to be friends too. That’s about as fun as seeing my exes faces pop up over there. 2. Bait and Switch Improvements
Facebook is like AOL back in the day now. There are constant updates. They have a new layout every five minutes – and then, as soon as you get used to it, they inevitably revert back to the layout and interface they were using before. And the thing is, the improvements rarely improve anything! It’s like they’re just trying to keep things edgy without addressing the improvements people really like. 3. Tag, You’re It
I would love it if people had to ask my permission before tagging me in a picture. Invariably, family members I haven’t seen in a while will post childhood pictures during my unfortunate mullet phase, and suddenly every friend I have is leaving messages asking if I’m the illegitimate daughter of Jeff Foxworthy or Billy Ray Cyrus. |
| 7 Creative Ways To Deck The Halls … Posted: 28 Dec 2010 01:00 AM PST Part of my favorite things about the holidays is the decorations. Sometimes, you can barely move around in my house during Christmas time. I try and decorate in themes but that doesn't always come out the way I plan! Here are some really creative ideas for the holidays. 1. Make Your Tree ShineOf course, your tree is the center of attention when it comes to Christmas decorations. How can you make it creative? You can choose two ways. One, decorate it with special ornaments. Use your ornaments from childhood. You baby's first Christmas ornament or your first ornament after you were married are always memory keepers. Or, you may want to decorate in themes. Try all red and white ornaments, or angels, or Santa's. 2. Decorate Your EntranceWelcome your visitors with swags of evergreen, Christmas lights, and seasonal flowers. While decorations are expected this time of year, your foyer may be overlooked in favor of the family room. My foyer is always decorated with lights, snowmen, and trees! 3. Decorate in Unexpected PlacesDo not forget to spruce up corners and crannies. Place a little tree on the bedside table. String some lights in the bathroom, around the mirror. Replace your table center piece with a funny snowman or Santa. Place a Nativity set on the coffee table. Be creative and think of something unexpected! |
| 10 Reese Witherspoon Street Style Inspirations … Posted: 27 Dec 2010 08:14 PM PST Whether you find her annoying or as cute as a button, you cannot deny the fact that Reese Witherspoon is quite stylish. While her style may not be that avant-garde, I still find some of her outfits wonderfully put together. I gathered here 10 looks that she rocked in 2010. Which one is your favorite? 1. Concrete Cowgirl
This one is utterly cute. I like the combination of the slightly oversized cardigan and layered skirt but my favorite bit would have to be the boots. Aren’t they delightful? 2. Woven WomanShe looks quite the summer girl here, doesn’t she? Again, I am into her layered skirt. But I think the scene stealer here is the large bag. That looks like a classy version of a huge beach bag, which makes it 10 times better in my opinion. 3. Fire GoddessShe looks eerily like Jennifer Aniston here, circa her Rachel Green days. It’s probably because she looks like she’s not wearing proper chest support. That little detail aside, I like the summery feel of this outfit. Nothing like a great combination of warm colors and neutrals to make you look fire goddess gorgeous. 4. Fedora FemmeThis is a look that I will most definitely copy. Minus the fedora, of course, because hats give me headaches. I am liking Reese’s penchant for choosing neutral colors. 5. Booties BeautifulReese does not usually go for that irresistible seductress look when she’s out and about so this particular outfit was a surprise. She wore this to the salon, by the way. |
