8 Awesome People to Watch on YouTube …

YouTube is fun. Every time there is a special on (typically on VH1), I have to take a trip over there to check out some of my favorites. It’s kind of hypnotic, and I sometimes spend hours of time mesmerized by the funny or amazing things I see. Here are some of the most awesome people I’ve seen on the popular web site.

1. Chad Vader

Darth Vader’s loser brother is the brain child of Matt Sloan and Aaron Yonda, and I always look forward to what Chad will do next. These guys are actually comedic geniuses and have a ton of amazing videos, the majority of which are well worth checking out whenever you have time or need a laugh. And if you love Star Wars – or hate it – then Chad’s skits are a must-see.

2. Amy Walker

This girl is awesome because she is … let’s say, uniquely talented. Her "21 Accents" video is enormously popular, for good reason. She’s my go-to girl when I feel like walking around and talking in a British accent for no reason. I just head over and check out her videos for tips. Seriously, if nothing else, this girl deserves some serious voice-over work.

7 Great Holiday Hand Soaps …

I go all-out with my holiday décor. No room is immune from the efforts of my frenzied (but festive) decorating whims, and that includes the bathrooms. One of my favorite parts of decorating the baths for the holidays is choosing gorgeous scented candles and a coordinating hand soap. It's not always easy to find a good holiday hand soap, but I've found a load of them at drugstore.com… here's a list of 8 great holiday hand soaps you can find there. Stock up! Some of these are only available seasonally!

1. Softsoap Liquid Hand Soap, Black Raspberry & Vanilla

That's why this hand soap appears on my list — the sweet raspberry scent reminds me of Grandma's pie and of the upcoming holidays. It's a reliable, inexpensive soap, too, so if you're expecting a lot of guests this holiday season, it's a good option for the guest bath.

2. Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Liquid Hand Soap, Apple

7 Things You Should Not Say to Someone with Depression …

7 Things You Should Not Say to Someone with Depression …

Depression is a debilitating illness that affects both mind and body. It messes with emotions, decision making skills, and thought and body functions. People who suffer from depression need all the support, help, and understanding they can get. If you know someone who suffers from some form of depression, then you probably feel like you should at least say something to show that you care. Before you make a sound, you need to know that there will some things that you shouldn't say to people who suffer from depression.

1. "You need to be stronger." or "You are stronger than this."

Depression is not about strengths and weaknesses. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Saying this to people with depression can make them feel guilty about not being able to fight the depression.

2. "What's wrong?" or "What's your problem?"

People with depression don't essentially have anything wrong with them. The depression is not even caused by one specific problem. Sometimes depression is the result of a number of problems and life events. In other cases, people are not even able to identify exactly what caused the depression because, more than anything else, it is a chemical imbalance.

3. "Lighten up." or "You should try to enjoy life."

Don't jump to the conclusion that people with depression do not want to enjoy life. They do but their brain will not allow them. They really do want to enjoy life and be happy; that is why they suffer so much from the disease.

8 Tips on Being a Team Player …

Working together to achieve a common goal in a workplace is important. If one person lacks, then it is going to make the whole team have to work harder than they would before. When I think of a team player, I think of a quote that I read by Henry Ford: "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." This quote is definitely true. Right now, I am going to give you 8 tips on being a team player …

8. Recognize Others Have Own Strengths and Weaknesses

When you are on a team, you should recognize that other individuals have strengths and weaknesses – just as we all have different opinions. This is what makes us unique.

7. Be Adaptable

At first, you may not fit in. However, in order to be a good team player, you need to mold yourself to fit in with the rest of the team. You must be willing to help others.

6. Think outside the Box

Of course, thinking inside the box isn't going to get you very far. In order to be a great team player, it would be a good idea if you were to start thinking outside the box. How many of you agree with me on this one?

7 Great Holiday Cookie Recipes …

I love baking special treats for the holidays, but I've gotten tired of making the same cookies, like chocolate chip or walnut. Come on, there has to be something more exciting and unique out there, right? So I've done some digging, and have asked friends and family to share their favorite recipes, and now I'm thrilled — I'll have the prettiest, tastiest cookies this holiday! Here are 7 great holiday cookie recipes, and not one of them is average, dull, or even ho-hum.

1. Kolacky

These are a traditional Polish cookie, and I use a recipe handed down from my grand-father's mother, who was born and raised in Poland. You'll need ½ cup of softened butter, 4 ounces of room-temperature cream cheese, 1 cup of flour, and your favorite flavor of preserves (raspberry and apricot are my favorites) plus powdered sugar for topping. Cream the butter and cream cheese together, then add the flour and beat until well-blended and "doughy." Divide the dough in half, put each half in a large Ziplock bag, smush them flat, and chill. One at a time, take the dough out of the bags, roll it flat and about an eighth of an inch thick, cut the dough into 3-inch squares, and put a dab of preserves in the middle. Pinch closed opposite corners of the dough together across the preserves, then bake at 375 for about 13 minutes until the cookies are VERY light brown. Cool on the cookie sheet for a few minutes, then carefully move them to a rack to cool completely. Once they're cooled, sprinkle them with powdered sugar. So pretty!

2. Trail Mix Cookies

These cookies have a little bit of everything in them, and are one of my favorites. Start with your favorite oatmeal cookie recipe, then add ¼ of a cup of each of the following before baking: coconut, chocolate chips, walnuts, and dried cherries. Don't like coconut or dried cherries? Leave them out or substitute raisins. Make them as big or as small as you like, and enjoy them with a tall glass of ice-cold milk.

3. Ladies' Kisses

These cookies are so much fun to make, and they look so pretty when they're done! You'll need 1¼ sticks of softened butter, 1 egg yolk, 1 cup of ground almonds, 1 cup of flour, 2 squares of semi-sweet chocolate, ½ cup of sugar, and cocoa powder and powdered sugar to sprinkle over the finished cookies. Beat the butter and sugar until they're fluffy, then add the egg yolk, then the almonds and flour. Make the dough into a big ball, then put it in a big baggie and chill it in the fridge for an hour and a half. Break off small pieces of the dough, roll them into balls, and bake them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper at 325 for 20 minutes. Cool them completely. Melt the chocolate in a saucepan or double-boiler, then dip the bottoms of each cooled cookie into the chocolate, sandwich two cookies together, then place the round cookie sandwiches on a cooling rack til they're all made into sandwiches. Dust them with powdered sugar and/or cocoa powder. Aren't they pretty?

7 Best Ideas for a Teen Date …

Have you ever been stumped on what you should do for your next date with your boyfriend? Sometimes it can be difficult coming up with creative ideas of fun things to do. Even if you have plenty of ideas for dates, it’s still nice to read other peoples ideas of perfect or super fun date ideas for inspiration! Here are my 7 best ideas for a teen date!

1. Bowling

How long has it been since you took a spin…er- roll at bowling? It’s been quite a while since I’ve been myself, but I do enjoy going when I get the chance! Even if you only end up with gutter balls, you’ll still have a good time! It’s a great way to burn a few extra calories while you’re at it! And did you know that most bowling alleys serve delish cheeseburgers and root beer floats? So much for burning a few extra calories!

2. Bike Riding

Pull out your bike and grease those spokes! It’s time to go for a lovely bike ride down a scenic country road. If you don’t own a bike you can rent or borrow one. Pack a picnic with some hot chocolate and stop to enjoy some time with just the two of you. Great opportunity to sneak in some extra snuggle time!

3. Bon Appetit

A typical date would consist of dinner, possibly at a nice restaurant or a fast food pace. Here’s an unusual twist- Cook it yourselves! That’s right, go all out and put together a fabulous meal, cook it and then eat it together! Some ideas for a cool dinner would be a huge breakfast, Italian subs, Soup and salad, or steaks and shakes. After you decide what you’re going to make, decide where you want to eat it. A candle-light meal is fun, but if you want to spice up the location, pitch a “tent” made out of blankets in your living room and have a camp-out meal. Or eat out on a back patio or a front porch! The possibilities are endless. Have fun and be creative!

8 Advantages Of Flat Shoes Over Heels …

There's no denying that shoes with high heels look fabulous. They're elegant, sexy, stylish, and finish a smart outfit off beautifully. However, looks aren't everything! I've long been a devotee of flats for several reasons. Here are some of the advantages that flat shoes have.

1. Practical

Flats may not be sexy (although there are some pretty gorgeous pairs), but by God they're practical! You can do anything while wearing them. Heels aren't really much use for playing with the kids, doing sports or doing a job when you're on your feet all day.

2. Comfortable

I've always preferred being comfortable, and can't stand shoes that don't fit well or are difficult to walk in. My shoe wardrobe consists largely of trainers, flat boots, and shoes with little or no heel, and heels are kept for special occasions.

3. Going The Distance

I like walking about the city, so flat shoes are much more suitable and mean that I don't get sore feet. Anyone whose job involves covering a lot of ground will prefer flats for the same reason. You don't see your mailman in heels, do you? (although that might be a rather strange sight if he is a mailMAN and not a mailWOMAN)

10 Gorgeous Items to Wish for This Christmas …

Have you been good this year? I'm positively sure you have and that you'll both give and receive many presents this Christmas. But, why not put together a wish list to help you determine what you like and what you need? Okay, it doesn't have to start with "Dear Santa", I know we're not kids anymore but still, a short list of your desired items can't hurt… especially when you're grown enough to be your own Santa. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

1. Michael Kors iPhone Case

Michael Kors iPhone case
Price: $79.95 at gifts.com
Wish it if: You are a fashion&tech freak
Most people won't even think about buying you a new iPhone case, believe me on that one! If you have an iPhone, you certainly have a case, so why would anybody take the risk of buying you something you already have. However, iPhone cases are like bags, you can never have just one. So, here's a stylish wallet-size iPhone clutch you can treat yourself with after the Christmas or if you have some money left over from your Christmas shopping.

2. Oscar de la Renta Robe

Oscar de la Renta Robe
Price: $74.00 at shop.nordstrom.com
Wish it if: You think anytime is a good time to look like a lady
Is this a dress or a robe? It certainly looks like both! I always need a piece like this one and I always remember that when I've already spent my shopping money! So, if you already have tons of clothes, shoes, gadgets and jewelry pieces, do give it some thought. Now excuse me while I close my eyes and focus on this item – maybe my subliminal message will find its way to my fiancé's mind.

3. The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe

The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe
Price: $17.98 at gifts.com
Wish it if: You love Poe's work
Poe, Dickens and Orwell, you have these three authors to blame for having me here. Lol! The desire to read their works in the original, non-translated form is what kept me motivated to learn English and start writing. So, if you are a dedicated Poe fan like me, you'd certainly love to have all his works at hand…And you'll have no problem deciding on what to read… Nevermore!

8 Oddest Phobias …

I've always been fascinated by the study of phobias. I've often wondered; What came first? The actual phobia or the name of the phobia? I would imagine that the phobia would have to surface before it could be named. Here are the 8 oddest phobias I came across. There are tons more and they make for some very interesting reading. I think naming phobias would make a terrific trivia game!

8. Alektorophobia – fear of chickens

I could see how this fear could arise in someone who was attacked by a chicken when they were a small child. I have a rooster who occasionally jumps at me with his spurs out, but only when he thinks I'm endangering his two little hens. I'm not really scared off by my rooster, since he's a short stocky guy and can barely jump up past my ankle. That's why I wear tall rubber boots! Alektorophobia also refers to a fear of anything to do with chicken in general, such as getting food poisoning from eating it.

7. Barophobia – fear of gravity

I found this phobia on a list, but couldn't find anything suggesting how it would come to be. I can't imagine having a fear of gravity. How would a person with this phobia function on a daily basis, seeing as gravity is unavoidable here on Earth? I'd be interested to know just how many people are actually affected by this phobia as well.

6. Chronomentrophobia – fear of clocks

This phobia not only refers to clocks in general, but also to time itself. I can think of a few people who might unconsciously have this fear. One of them refuses to wear a watch or look at a clock. Another one dislikes being told to be somewhere at a specific time. The third person never seems to know what time it is and doesn't care to know either. I vaguely remember reading a book about a person being afraid of clocks that were in the walls of a house. Maybe this person had chronomentrophobia!

7 Ways to Make Cheap Gifts look Chic …

I've found many great deals when trying to find something nice for a friend's birthday or other special occasions. Cheap gifts can be dressed up with a little extra time and effort. It's amazing at how much can be done by using these 7 ways to make cheap gifts look chic. Try out at least a couple of the techniques mentioned in my list and see what you think. You might be pleasantly surprised at the outcome!

7. Add some jewels

Bedazzling items don't always make them look chic, but a few rhinestones or crystals can create a more elegant look for most things. Old buttons can be taken off of a cheap sweater and replaced with some shiny crystals. Jewels can be glued on to a plain candle holder for some additional flair. As inexpensive as rhinestones are, they can really spice up a number of different gifts with very little effort.

6. A new layer of paint can be applied

Cheap furniture is often made to look like an amazing piece of furniture with a special paint job or additional coating. Sometimes this process can be extremely time-consuming, but the final outcome is well worth it. Vintage items are sought after a great deal and usually cost quite a good chunk of money. Applying a fresh coat of paint in a popular vintage color can create an item that looks like you spent a fortune on it, as well as tons of time to hunt down this chic vintage piece of furniture.

5. Place gift items in a basket

You'd be surprised at how much sophistication can be added with a little basket. Combining a variety of items in a basket allows you to create a gift that has lots of character. For instance, arranging a variety of soaps, shampoo, conditioners, and other bath items among a couple of wash clothes, bath scrubbies, or hand towels in a large basket makes for a very chic gift that doesn't cost tons of money.

7 Cities You Must Visit in the U.S. …

It's easy to get lost in a tourist trap. And oftentimes, I find myself feeling underwhelmed by certain vacations. Much of what I see is over-rated and comes with a "seen and be seen" attitude, which is wholly unappealing. Or breaks my budget.

Here is my list of seven cities you MUST visit in the U.S.:

1. Portland, Oregon

Don't believe what people may tell you about the rain in Oregon. The state might have some harsh climatic and seasonal changes, but sunny days do exist. Most of the locals have adjusted, and as a visitor to Portland you shouldn't let a little mist dissuade you from a flurry of outdoor activities. There is an omnipresent wine and microbrew scene here to take in, as well as plentiful options to hike, camp and kayak. And when it does rain, wear a raincoat rather than using an umbrella… and continue on.

2. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

This growing Rust Belt metropolitan has been on a number of "best of" lists in recent years. With the sights of old architecture mixed with new in the skyline, an abundance of beautiful bridges and a city center that is surrounded by mountains and rivers, Pittsburgh is seemingly a "total package" for big city and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The cost of living here is cheap, so you will get a lot of bang for your buck when visiting. Also, this SW Pennsylvanian city contains one of the largest cultural districts between Chicago and New York City.

3. Cleveland, Ohio

Keeping with the Midwest hidden secrets, Cleveland has become something of a food-lover's paradise. With celebrity Michael Symon at the helm of three (soon-to-be four) restaurants and encouraging city chefs to embrace the locavore movement, eating out has never tasted so good. Or been so inexpensive! While Symon only put Northeast Ohio on the map, there are many chefs here creating quite a stir in the food scene. Stick around for a few days to explore the West Side Market. Then, walk it all off in one of the city's fantastic MetroParks or go explore the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Top 7 Things to Never Say to Women …

Being a woman myself, there are certain things that I never want to hear. This is merely my own list. I'm sure other women have different things that make them cringe. Here are my top 7 things to never say to women that I have come up with. Feel free to add some of your own in the comment section!

7. 'What are you wearing?!'

If I didn't feel comfortable putting something on, then I wouldn't wear it. However, if I get ready to walk out of the house and someone says this to me, they get the Death Glare. I think my wardrobe is fairly decent. I don't have anything this is extremely outlandish or horridly gauche. At least in my opinion! I can think of more tactful things to say if someone doesn't want to be seen with me in a particular outfit.

6. 'Ew. I'm not eating that.'

Have you ever been so tired at the end of the day that all you want to do is curl up and take a nice long nap? I have. There are days when this just isn't possible and it's time for dinner. I make something that I think looks and smells pretty good, only to be greeted by 'Ew'. Grrr. My response is usually, 'Then you make your own dinner'. I try to be pleasant when I say it. If I think I can't pull off a nice tone of voice, then I tend to simply turn away and begin serving myself.

5. Negative things about close friends

Unless the thought is mutual, I don't like hearing negative comments about my friends. There is also a difference between stating the obvious and downright bashing of a friend. Guys tend to openly say mean comments to one another and do it in a joking manner. It seems to me that women are usually closer to their friends and feel slightly offended when someone starts speaking ill of one of them.

9 Things Hotel Clerks Never Tell Guests …

9 Things Hotel Clerks Never Tell Guests …

The Better Half has worked in hotels for the last ten years and knows a lot of things that you and I will never know about hotels. But I have my ways of getting secrets, so I thought I would share these with – well, anyone and everyone, really. Here are 9 things hotel clerks never tell guests – and they might help you get better deals.

1. Direct Dialing

Most times, if you dial the reservations number of a hotel, it’s going to send you right to the main office. There, room rates and the like are typically set in stone and it’s impossible to get a better rate. However, if you look up the direct number for the hotel you want to stay at, you have a better chance of getting a good deal. To book business, individual employees are usually much more willing to negotiate.

2. Get Some Independence

Chain hotels really don’t like to give out discounts. Especially during holidays or high travel seasons, they prefer to make as much money as possible and do not want to offer a deal on their rates at all. Independent hotels, however, have a tendency to negotiate and offer much better deals. Depending on when you need your hotel, you might want to go the independently owned route instead.

3. Upgrade Etiquette

Probably everyone who’s stayed in a hotel has asked for an upgrade at least once. And many of us probably haven’t gotten it. The folks at the desk hate being asked about upgrades when there are other guests standing around within earshot. If they hear the clerk say yes, they’re probably going to clamor for an upgrade themselves. Other talk to the reservations clerk privately or request a corner room instead. Those rooms are larger and generally cost the same as a standard room.
