They're such a simple way to add instant elegance to an outfit, to make a casual skirt and jacket into a more formal affair. There are lots of fascinators to choose from too, and I've found so many I love online at ModCloth! Here are 7 pretty fascinators. Some are one-of-a-kind vintage and may not be in stock by the time you read this, but they ought to at least give you some fashion inspiration. 1. The Formal Fascinator
 2. Hats in the Belfry Fascinator

| Posted: 18 Jan 2011 10:54 AM PST Sending flowers is a versatile gestures, because it can be done for so many reasons. There are different flowers for different occasions, different arrangements for different moods, and so on. Here, however, are 8 popular reasons to send flowers – and maybe they’ll inspire you to send some as well! 1. A HolidayNaturally, celebrating a holiday is a great reason to send flowers. The act doesn’t have to be relegated to Valentine’s Day by any means. You can send flowers for Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, or New Year’s, for Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day, even for Halloween. You can send flowers on Friendship Day, Nurse Appreciation Day, not to mention Mother’s Day and Father’s Day – well, you get the idea. 2. To Show Your LoveWhether you are sending flowers to a spouse, a partner, a parent, a sibling, or a friend, doing so is a great way to show your love. Flowers aren’t just for spouses and lovers either. Sometimes, in fact, they are the perfect gift for a friend or family member, especially if you just want to show someone that you love them. 3. To Show SympathyWhen something bad happens, such as an illness, an accident, or a death in the family, sometimes you don’t know what to say. At the same time, you want the people who are most affected to know that you are thinking of them. Sending them flowers at the hard times is a great way to do that. Including a card expressing your sympathy is also a good idea. |
| 8 Wacky Marriage Laws Still on the Books … Posted: 18 Jan 2011 10:42 AM PST It’s hard to believe how many strange marriage laws still exist in obscurity in the dawning of 2011. The majority of them aren’t necessarily enforced – but they sure are funny! The ability to marry someone by proxy, to get married as a joke – does your state have these laws hidden somewhere in their charters? Take a look at these 8 wacky marriage laws still on the books and see if your state is represented! 1. Marriage By ProxyIn Montana, you can get married without even being there! Someone can stand in for you to say "I do." Actually, several states allow this law, such as Texas, California, and Colorado. However, it is only in Montana that a double proxy wedding ceremony is allowed – meaning that, yep, neither the bride nor the groom necessarily has to be there! The kicker is, this law is meant for people who are in the military, so they can still marry their sweethearts even if they get sent overseas. 2. The "I Do" PrankYou would think that getting married as a joke only existed in Las Vegas, right? Nope! In the state of Delaware, prank marriages are so common that when you try to get your marriage annulled there, one of the options you can choose as a reason for the annulment is "prank." Well, the wording is more professional – you can dissolve your marriage due to reasons of a dare or a jest – but still! 3. Remarriage ReduxIf you live in Kentucky, you better be sure about the person you’re marrying. Why? Because it is officially illegal to remarry the same person more than three times. You know how some couples get divorced and remarry – and then get divorced and remarry, and then get divorced? Well, that fourth remarriage is simply not allowed. Frankly, it’s probably a good idea to step into a trainwreck relationship like that anyway. I mean, if you aren’t sure by the third time, it’s probably time to throw in the towel, don’t you think? |
| 8 Strange Animal Mating Rituals … Posted: 18 Jan 2011 10:18 AM PST Recently, one of my cats has gone on heat for the first time since I got her, and my, what a display I've been subjected to! She's been rolling around, trying to get friendly with anything that moves (and a few things that don't). It's really quite an exhibition. Here are some strange mating rituals from the animal world … 1. Brown Antechinus
Photo Credit: cs.huji.ac.il A little mouse-like creature from Australia, the Antechinus would make any human male green with envy at his staying power. He can keep going for an extraordinary 12 hours – with one female. And as if that's not enough, he'll put it about as much as possible. He dies happy. The females probably have 5 minutes of fun, and 11 hours 55 minutes of wishing he'd hurry up so they can go to sleep … 2. Bonobos
Photo Credit: courtneyBolton I don't think I can possibly print some of the things that bonobo monkeys get up to. Suffice it to say that their sexual shenanigans make Henry Miller look like Mills and Boon. You name it, they do it, whatever the reason. 3. Red-Sided Garter Snake
Photo Credit: Jeff Dyck Oh. My. God. When these snakes wake up from hibernation, the females don't even get the chance to nip off to the beauty salon and tart themselves up a bit. No, it's straight down to business, as they get jumped by up to 100 males. At the same time. |
| Posted: 18 Jan 2011 09:43 AM PST I'm notorious among my friends and family for being the world's (or at least metro Detroit's) best thrift store shopper. This is a distinction I cherish, and I'm proud to say that most of my and my daughter's clothing, shoes, and home accessories come from local thrift stores. But bargain thrifting isn't always as straightforward as you might think, and you need to be well-prepared for a day in the thrift store. Here are 7 tips for thrift shopping. 1. Make a listIf you don't make a list of the items you need, you'll end up buying things you don't need, and that's just a waste of money. For instance, in my day planner, I have a list of the items I want, a list of the items my daughter want, and a list of the items my boyfriend and his kids all want. If it's not on the list, I won't buy it unless it's something I know I can fit into my wardrobe. Otherwise, if I buy that gorgeous suede skirt, but I don't have anything to wear with it, I'll end up searching for months to find the right top, shoes, etc. And there's no fun, or savings, in that. 2. Dress for itPrepare for a day at the thrift store by dressing for it. Dress comfortably, and, if the stores you'll be shopping don't have dressing rooms, in layers. For instance, wear a long skirt with leggings underneath, and flats, so you can try on jeans. Wear a tank under a cardi, so you can try on tops. And be sure you're comfortably dressed, too, since you're going to be spending a lot of time on your feet! 3. What's the policy? Before you shop, know the thrift store's policies. Do they accept exchanges or returns? Do they accept cash only, or debit cards, too? What are their hours? Which charities do they benefit? Do they have fitting rooms? These are all things you may want to know ahead of time. |
| 8 Ways to Cut Back on Caffeine … Posted: 18 Jan 2011 08:43 AM PST Honestly, I am a big fan of caffeine. I mean, aren't many people? Despite that sudden boost of energy that many of us love to love, there are some reasons that you need to cut back on caffeine. If you have been told that you need to cut back on that caffeine, then this blog is for you. I am going to give you 8 ways to cut back on caffeine … 8. Cut Back GraduallyAs with any addiction, you will need to cut back gradually. Now, some people will tell you to just quit cold turkey, but this really is not a good idea. Reduce the amount of caffeine you drink each day and before you know it, you won't be missing a thing. Remember, there are other alternatives to caffeine – such as acai berry. 7. Drink WaterEveryone should be drinking water each day, but in this case, it will help reduce the effects of caffeine withdrawal. You should drink half your body weight. So, an individual that is one hundred and sixty pounds should drink eighty ounces of water every day. 6. Reduce the AmountAlong with cutting back gradually, when you do drink something, such as coffee, you can easily reduce the amount of caffeine you consume. Fill your glass halfway with coffee, then add hot water to the rest of it. |
| 8 Reasons Not to Lie to Your Spouse … Posted: 18 Jan 2011 06:57 AM PST First of all, before I go any further, I am going to tell you that I am no saint. While I do not believe lying is a bad thing, I have lied before and, while I am not proud of it, it will probably happen again. You know, not BIG lies, but probably little lies. Anyone who tells me that they have never lied in their life is telling a fib. However, I do not recall telling lies to my husband. I give him the same respect that I want in return. With that thought in mind, I am going to give you 8 reasons not to lie to your spouse … 8. They Will Eventually Find OutEventually, your spouse is going to find out that you lied. I mean, it may not be right now. It may not even be tomorrow and it might not be next month – it will be someday. It could be five years from now – trust me, your spouse will find out, so there is no need to lie. 7. You Should Be Able to Tell Them AnythingWhen you marry someone, I believe you should have trust in them. You should not feel the need to hide anything from them. I mean, come on, you should trust your spouse enough to be able to tell them anything. Take me as an example, I never feel a need to hide anything from my husband – nothing. 6. This Can Cause Your Relationship to FailWhen you lie and you continue lying, you will lose the trust of your spouse. Do you know the damage this is going to do to your relationship? Eventually, it could cause your relationship to crash down. Things just aren't the same when someone constantly lies. |

| 7 Ways to Get Rid of the Afternoon Slump … Posted: 18 Jan 2011 02:28 AM PST I'm sure everyone has days where the afternoon becomes hazy and it's hard to think clearly. I've listed 7 ways to get rid of the afternoon slump. This slump is something that affects many people and there are plenty of ways to get rid of it. The tips I've mentioned below might come in handy for you. Maybe you'll be able to pass some of them on to friends and family members as well. 7. Drink a cup of coffeeA little caffeine boost can be very helpful in the afternoon. I find that even a half of a cup of coffee gives me the kick I need to finish out the rest of the day. I always seem to get run down around 2pm, which is the perfect time to warm up a cup of coffee left over from breakfast. I save the last cup of coffee from the morning pot and store it in the fridge just for this afternoon pick-me-up. 6. Watch a funny YouTube clipThere's nothing like a good laugh to help me get over that afternoon slump. I have quite a few short videos bookmarked so I can switch over to them whenever I need a quick mood booster. I'm always amazed at how many humorous videos there are online. Most of the ones I like involve animals. I love home videos where people catch their pets doing things out of the ordinary and it's even better when they add voice-overs to these videos. 5. Make a snackSometimes I'm running low on energy because I didn't eat enough for lunch or I completely skipped eating all together. When I get busy in the afternoon it's hard for me to remember that I need to take a break and eat lunch. If I'm able to take some snacks along with me and eat them whenever I get hungry, then I don't feel tired in the afternoon for very long. Getting low on energy makes people tired, but it's very easy to bring up your blood sugar level with a light snack. |

Photo Credit: Bob B. Brown Xtreme Indoor Karting is perfect for getting the adrenalin pumping. Go-karts that reach speeds of 45 mph can be driven on the half-mile indoor track. This means that rain or shine, you can enjoy go-karting at its finest. There are also 120 interactive arcade games to choose from. These go-karts are speedy enough that you have to wear a helmet when driving them. 6. Kennedy Space Center
Photo Credit: MadGrin Guests can enjoy the sights, sounds, and physical sensation of an actual launch in a space shuttle. The best part is that guests don't have to go through all the painstaking training that an actual astronaut is required to complete. Scheduled guest appearances by different astronauts are set throughout the year. This is a great way to meet and talk to a real live astronaut and ask anything you've ever wondered about. 5. Take a tour of the Naval Aviation Museum
Photo Credit: ChristopherTaylor Pensacola is where this museum is located. There are plenty of exhibits and collections to view, a motion based simulator, air combat simulators, cockpit trainers, and people can even watch the Blue Angels practice. The IMAX Theater at the museum has a variety of movies available for viewing. |

| Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:51 AM PST There are several things that you can do at home for nausea without having to rely on pharmaceutical drugs. God gave us many natural herbs that are great for it – here are a few for you to try next time it hits! First and foremost, though, you do need to evaluate your situation and find out what is your source of nausea. Is it a migraine? Something you ate? Flu or other viral bug? Pregnancy? Determining this will help to better pick which remedy you should try. 1. GingerGinger has been used for at least 2000 years, and is one of the top three investigated herbs ever. It is safe to take when pregnant, and is the top recommended herb for nausea of any kind. You can relieve nausea with ginger either by taking capsules, drinking ginger ale, or eating things with ginger in it. Ginger has a vast number of other uses such as relieving fever in children, helping with colds and flu's, menstrual cramps and motion sickness! 2. PeppermintPeppermint is most beneficial in a peppermint tea, or taken stronger with plain peppermint extract. Peppermint also helps with colds. This remedy may be a little strong or over powering, but it does work. You can also eat peppermint candy. Though not as potent, it works for minor cases of nausea. 3. Ground Cumin SeedsConsuming a half-teaspoon of ground cumin seeds is said to relive nausea. This is also a little strong, but it is worth a try when nothing else seems to work. |
| 7 Body Parts I Like to See Pierced … Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:16 AM PST I'll risk sounding weird by saying that I really like piercings. They can look sexy, cute and even girly, providing that the person knows where to draw a line and how to choose a nice ring. But here, let me tell you which piercings I like and why… 1. Belly button
I loved it when I was a teen and I still love it today. In fact, I'm not planning on removing my belly ring until pregnancy, and who knows… If I start to miss it I'll probably go and get my tummy pierced again. The fact that is almost private is definitely my favorite – you don't have to show it, if you don't want. Just wear a longer top and that's it. Plus, you'll never have to take it off only because your company has strict policies on how the employees are supposed to look like. 2. Earlobe
A friend of mine used to have a gorgeous tiny spider earring high on her earlobe, I remember liking it so much that I wanted to do get one too. I've chickened out when I realized how painful it actually is, so I guess I'll just keep liking it from a safe distance. According to her, that hard part of the ear never heels completely and, although it looks great, it's kind of painful to live with. 3. Nose
I think I wrote about this before, but never mind, I don't mind telling it again, you know me. Well, these things can look so girly and cute and I don't see a reason why parents have a problem with it. I never understood my mom and dad – they were really against it so my poor sis never got the permission to go get her nose pierced. Nose actually heels rather quickly, even faster than the belly button. So, if you're thinking about it, I'd definitely say go with it, you can always take it off later. But, hey, that's just my opinion. |
| 8 Gorgeous Ladies in Jewel Tones at the Golden Globes … Posted: 17 Jan 2011 10:11 PM PST Ah, awards season. That time of the year when we live for red carpet photos and wait for cringe-worthy acceptance speech moments. That time of the year when we shamelessly copy the way a favorite star poses on the red carpet. Of course, she’s wearing a designer gown while you just draped a curtain around your body. It’s okay, you are not alone. Let’s start with the lovely ladies in jewel tones at the recent Golden Globes, shall we? 1. Angelina Jolie
She was the inspiration behind this post so it’s only natural that she be number 1. How gorgeous was her Atelier Versace gown? I am not liking this style of hair for her (it bothered me while watching The Tourist) but the color is lovely. Of course, the presence of Brad Pitt beside her does not hurt. In fact, he is the perfect accesory. 2. Catherine Zeta-JonesIs it just me or does this remind you of a dress that Scarlett O’Hara wore? I am talking about the re-fashioned curtain. Forgive my apparent obsession with curtains. Back to the dress…it’s undoubtedly beautiful but the winner here is her hair and lovely makeup. How old is she again? 3. Amy AdamsHmm I remember that the last time she posed for the red carpet, she was VERY pregnant. And now she got her healthy and sexy body back. She wore a one-shoulder Marchesa gown. The laser cut details are beautiful! 4. Sofia VergaraThe luscious mama from Modern Family wore a Vera Wang dress and bling by David Webb. While the fabric of this dress is kinda too stiff, you have to admit that Sofia looks drop dead gorgeous. Look at those curves! I guess I should not be surprised since she’s always sexy on Modern Family. |
| 7 Holiday Fights You May Have Had … Posted: 17 Jan 2011 12:23 PM PST I am so glad that the holidays are finally over and things are getting back to normal. No matter how much you love your family and friends, the holidays are stressful, especially when everybody converges all at once. There were a lot of little spats going on behind the scenes in my house. So, here are 7 holiday fights you may have had – does anything sound familiar? 1. In-Law ArgumentsWhose year is it? Do you go to your parents’ house, or your partner’s parents’ house? Do they come to yours? Which set? But that’s not fair! You were with them last year! Yeah, but the year before that, we were with yours! What? One of the most typical fights of the holiday season, deciding who does what, where, and when can be seriously stressful – and it has all the keg powder necessary to cause a fight. 2. Money SpatsMoney really is the root of all evil. It can cause a fight at any point of the year. There might not be a holiday in sight, and money is still an issue. During the holidays, however, it’s a hundred times worse. How much is there? What do you have to spend it on? Where does it all go? Give it back! You spent too much! 3. Travel StressTraveling, too, causes stress no matter when you do it. What I discovered this holiday season is that it can also cause trouble even if you’re not the one traveling. You have fights by proxy, about who’s traveling when, why they’re doing it, why they have to do it, why they won’t stop doing it … it gets confusing as well as frustrating! |
