| 8 Gorgeous Coffee Mugs and Tea Cups … Posted: 20 Jan 2011 11:42 AM PST As any lover of coffee or tea can tell you, the best parts of the drink are your hands on the warm mug, the aroma of the brew… and of course the first sip of the heavenly concoction inside the mug. I love giving and receiving coffee and tea cups, and the best ones always seem to come from Anthropologie, one of my favorite house wares and gift stores. Here are 8 gorgeous coffee mugs and tea cups, all of them ideal for gift-giving. 1. Oresund Mug
 2. Monogrammed Mug, Missus
 3. Pinched Mosaic Mug

| 7 Ways MTV Is Killing the Video Star … Posted: 20 Jan 2011 10:58 AM PST You guys know that song, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles? Well, I think we need a catchy phrase like that for the new millennium, because guess what? There are no video stars any longer! At least, not really. See, here are 7 ways I think MTV – and VH1, too, but MTV is hipper – is killing the video star. Maybe you’ll agree with me! 1. Reality TVMTV’s many, many, many reality TV shows are definitely killing video stars. The same is probably doubly true for VH1, because it has even more reality TV endeavors. Even channels like CMT are starting to incorporate more unscripted TV shows than videos. They seem to think it’s enough that their shows star former or current musicians. Guess what? It’s not! 2. Scripted TVAnd then you have the scripted shows, like the Hills and things. I haven’t ever been able to get into that show, its originals, or any of the spinoffs. I don’t even understand it. Is it scripted? Is it true? Huh? The one thing I do know is that the Hills and Laguna Beach and the City and what have you, are all taking up space where videos could be played instead. I mean, I remember watching Beavis and Butthead, the Senate, Singled Out, and shows like that – but at least Beavis and Butthead played videos! 3. FranchisesFor that matter, MTV has too many franchises in the works to even pay attention to videos anymore. They have to keep the Hills going. And the Real World, which is in, what, its 500th season or something? Plus there’s that Gauntlet show or whatever, which evolved from those ridiculous Real World/Road Rules challenge shows. You also have the 16 and Pregnant/Teen Mom franchise. Yeah, I watch it, but I’d be happier with videos. |
| 7 Annoying People in Your College Classroom … Posted: 20 Jan 2011 10:46 AM PST When you get to college, it’s a new and exciting experience – but it can also be … well, let’s put it this way. When you’re surrounded by a bunch of young adults who are getting their first taste of independence and freedom, and may be trying to shed the skins of their high school personalities while they come into new ones on their own, things can get really interesting. Professors don’t have the same hold over their students as high school teachers, so everyone’s personality is really allowed to shine. That’s a great thing! But I bet you anything you can find 7 annoying people in your college classroom. Take a look! 1. The Overachieving CoedThis kid knows every answer, all the time, no matter what the class, question, or subject – and isn’t always required to be called on by the professor before shouting it out. You get used to seeing his or her hand waving in the air all the same, and sometimes find yourself blurting out answers yourself, just so you can get a word in edgewise! 2. The Easy A CoedThis kid is the opposite of an overachiever. You discover this when you get stuck in a group project with him. He doesn’t work with the group, he never shows up for your group dates, and yet, after you and the rest of the team have worked your butts off, he still gets the same A! Without doing anything! You often find yourself glaring at this kid from behind your text book and hope and pray that you won’t have to work with him ever again. 3. The Clueless Questioning CoedYou know this kid. She never pays attention. To anything. So, when the rest of the class is ready to move on, she starts lackadaisically asking all the same questions the professor just explained in his lecture – and she does it every time the class meets! While the rest of you were busy scribbling notes and getting answers, she must have been plotting about how to get out of doing any work for the period. |
| Posted: 20 Jan 2011 10:24 AM PST If you believe the media, children and teenagers these days only aspire to becoming famous, regardless of how it's achieved. More and more we see examples of people becoming well-known even if they have no discernable talent, and for some strange reason they are looked up to. Here are some of the careers I consider genuinely admirable – even if they don't make you famous. 1. Paramedic
They work unsociable hours, save lives, get abuse and don't even get paid that much. These days, paramedics spend much of their time dealing with the result of self-inflicted damage by drunks. Yet these guys are the first on the scene and without their rapid response, many lives would be lost. 2. Fireman
I once saw a fireman rescuing a cat. How great was that – my two favourite things! Seriously, though, these guys really do risk their lives to save others. I love them! 3. Teacher
There are good teachers and not-so-good teachers, and a few that are truly inspirational. A good teacher can really influence the course of your life. It's a very undervalued profession, but sadly many in the UK have become disillusioned, as they are given little respect and not allowed to enforce discipline. |
| 8 Pros of Being Self-Employed … Posted: 20 Jan 2011 10:19 AM PST Many people consider at some point becoming self-employed. It may be because they fancy starting their own business, they're unhappy in their job, they don't like their boss or they're finding it hard to get a job. In times of recession, when there are lots of people chasing fewer jobs, self-employment becomes even more attractive. It's not without its drawbacks, but here I'm going to concentrate on the positives. 1. Doing Something You LoveThere are lots of ways of becoming self-employed, and one is to turn a hobby into a business. Imagine how great it would be to make a living doing something you love! Of course, there will be boring things like paperwork as well, but on the whole you have more control over what you do when you're self-employed. 2. Set Your Own TimetableThis depends on your type of work – for example, if you offer a 24 hour emergency plumbing service, then you can't complain if you get calls in the middle of the night! But I like being able to get up when I want, work whatever hours I choose, take an afternoon off to go to the cinema and not have to work when someone else tells me to. 3. No Boss/ColleaguesI really can't be dealing with office politics and cranky bosses. It just isn't for me. I don't work well around other people and the distractions of office life. Instead, I can work peacefully in my own home and don't have the hassle of a commute. I don't even have to go downstairs to my 'office', since I live in a flat! |
| Posted: 20 Jan 2011 09:05 AM PST 8 things inside his head – that sounds interesting, doesn't it? For example, what does "I will call you later" or "That guy seems like a good friend of yours" mean in guy language? Well, let me decode those thoughts/sayings for you. 8. When He Seems DownWhile you are wondering what is wrong with him, because he seems so down, he is thinking that he is not going to admit he has an emotional issue. You see, men are stubborn when it comes to talking about their emotional issues. 7. We Should Hang Out SometimeIf he tells you that "we should hang out sometime," he is basically asking you if you would like to hang out with him. However, he is too afraid to ask you, because he is afraid of being turned down by you. 6. I Will Call You Later"I will call you later" may mean he will never call you. This means he may or may not call you. In fact, late could be three months from now. |
| Posted: 20 Jan 2011 07:00 AM PST There are various tips that you can use that will help you conserve fuel. You could always go out and get a fuel flex vehicle, but not everyone is able to afford those. So, for now, we will have to stick to using method to save fuel. Below, I am going to give you 8 tips on saving fuel … 8. Keep Windows ClosedI always stick to this tip. When you drive with your windows open, no matter the speed you are going, it will cause air drag. It can reduce your mileage by ten percent. Therefore, make sure you keep those windows up. You know, if you want to save fuel. 7. Think Ahead Before Reaching a HillWhat do I mean about this? Well, instead of accelerating when you reach the hill and you are already on it, try accelerating before you read it. 6. Gas Up at the Coolest Part of DayGenerally, the coolest part of the day would be early morning or late evening. Those are the two times during the day you should gas up. During this time, the gas is densest. You are being charged according to volume of measurement and the gas pumps measure the volumes of gasoline. |
| 7 Things you Must Know about Puppy Care … Posted: 20 Jan 2011 06:28 AM PST Bringing a new puppy home to meet the family is a joyous experience. I can still remember my first puppy and how thrilled I was to get her as a present. She was the best dog I ever had and lived to be my loyal companion up to the ripe old age of 17. If you've recently added a new canine companion to your list of family members, then here are 7 things you must know about puppy care. 7. Vaccines will keep puppies safeThe first vaccination should be given to your puppy once he's reached the age of 6 weeks. Most puppies are taken from their mothers around 8 weeks of age, so check to see if an initial vaccination was given or if you need to make an appointment with your vet. Vaccinations are typically given to dogs at 6, 9, 12, and 15 weeks and then once a year after that. 6. Housebreaking a puppy is no easy taskIf you want to maintain your sanity, then I suggest using the crating method for housebreaking a new puppy. This is a great technique for new puppy owners who work and who aren't able to be with their puppy all day long. There is a lot of information on the net about housebreaking puppies with the crate method. However you decide to go about training your new pup to use the bathroom facilities outside, instead of your lovely carpet, remember to be patient. 5. Learning right from wrong is a time-consuming processA puppy doesn't know that he isn't supposed to chew on your new leather shoes or that the trash can isn't there especially for him to knock over and rifle through. Teaching puppies what they can and can't do will take up a lot of your time, but you'll have a very well-behaved pup before you know it. Be sure to have plenty of toys on hand. These keep your puppy entertained and you'll spend a lot less time telling him 'no'. |
| Posted: 20 Jan 2011 02:33 AM PST Destination weddings are exciting for the entire wedding party, not just the bride and groom. Planning one of these fantastic events is a lot of work, unless you can find a planner to take care of all the details for a low price. If you are thinking about going somewhere exotic for your wedding, then here are 8 cool destination weddings for you to consider. 8. Costa Rica
The scenery of Costa Rica is lush and vibrant, making it a warm and inviting tropical location for a destination wedding. An additional bonus is the abundance of monkeys seen in the trees. Everywhere I looked there were monkeys. I adore these little primates and greatly enjoyed seeing them traveling through the trees in the jungle. I think Costa Rica would make an excellent choice for a destination wedding. 7. Norway
The waterfalls all across Norway provide an opportunity to choose from an assortment of locations where one of these magnificent wonders of nature could be seen in the background. How fun would it be to get married with the roar of the waterfall in the backdrop and being surrounded by mist filled with rainbows? The difficult part would be staying dry if the wedding was positioned too close to the waterfall itself. 6. Scotland
Castles are plentiful in Scotland and many of them are available for rent if you are looking to swap vows in one of these ancient habitats. Many of them are located along a body of water and a few are perched atop high cliffs where the waves can be heard crashing into the rocks below the castle. The sound of bagpipes and a group of traditional Morris dancers would make the entire scene complete. |
| 7 Reasons to Travel to Germany … Posted: 20 Jan 2011 02:21 AM PST I've traveled to many countries, but I haven't gotten the chance to take a trip to Germany yet. I do have a friend that lives there and she's always trying to get me to bring the family over for a visit. Even if you don't personally know someone who lives in Germany there are still plenty of reasons why you should visit this amazing country. Here is my list of 7 reasons to travel to Germany. 7. Oktoberfest
Photo Credit: xniev The US has a few cities that take on the challenge of producing an Oktoberfest that is supposedly similar to the one held in Germany. I would love to see the real thing! This festival lasts between 16 to 18 days and takes place at the end of September and the beginning of October. It is filled with traditional Bavarian food, music, and other festivities designed to celebrate Bavarian culture. 6. Neuschwanstein Castle
Photo Credit: stavrospap2004 The castle in Disneyland was designed after this particular castle in Germany. King Ludwig II commissioned this castle to be built overlooking the Hohenschwangau valley. It took 16 years to complete the portion of the castle that stands today. Even though Neuschwanstein castle is still incomplete, it is a gorgeous site that shouldn't be missed. 5. Cologne Cathedral
Photo Credit: Texas Ian The construction of this magnificent cathedral took 600 years to complete. The numerous towers and spires rocket into the sky. They remind me of an Edward Gorey drawing. If you are looking for some truly amazing architectural design, then this cathedral is the one to see. There are two towers that reach 515 feet into the air. |
| Posted: 20 Jan 2011 01:46 AM PST Tools are important. I didn’t really realize it even when I first moved out of my parents’ house. Now, put two girls in a house without any tools, and arguments are bound to ensue. "Where’s the hammer?" "What hammer? We have never had a hammer." My dad comes to do repairs quite often, and quite often I make sure he conveniently forgets his tools – but I think it’s time we got our own. So, here are 7 tools every woman needs. Do you have these hanging around the house? 1. Hammer
Photo Credit: flight of the troglodyte Must have. Great for pounding in nails, of course, it is also helpful when you leave the dogs out and they decide to dig up the runner under the door. A hammer is the one thing you can always use, because it’s so multifunctional. After all, you can also use it to claw nails out of the wall when you pound them in crooked. Awesome! 2. Level
Photo Credit: McEntegart Library Any time you think you’re going to be hanging your own shelves and things like that, you need a level. You don’t want to end up with lopsided décor. All your pictures and knick knacks will slide off into the floor! You can get a laser level or a regular one, just make sure you have one. They come tiny, too, so that’s cool. 3. Tape Measure
Photo Credit: redjar Tape measures are just as important as hammers, if not more so. You need them to measure dimensions, doorways, windows. You need them if you’re going to buy curtains, blinds, or area rugs. They are easier to use than yardsticks and way more accurate than if you just try to use your own foot as a measuring tool. |
| 7 Ways to Deal with a Grumpy Person … Posted: 20 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST Everyone has that one person that they have to deal with on a regular basis that is just plain grumpy – the grouch of all grouches! Whether this grump is your boss, your spouse, your grandma or your teenage son, here are some tips to gently melt their grumps away! 1. Be Alert To Their TriggersPay attention to the things that trigger their grouchy spells. Do they hate crowds? Dislike noise? Do your best to “nip it in the bud” so to speak. Steer clear of situations that make them grouchy. Answer the phone before your hubby has a chance to rant over telemarketers. If you have to, break your teenager’s speakers to keep the noise down. And do all this with the right attitude – that’s the key – but more on that later. 2. Don’t Let Their Grouchiness Affect YouIf you respond to their grouches with grumps of your own, you only worsen the situation. To every grouchy statement that is said, respond with something positive. It never helps to give back what they are dishing out. 3. Have A Sense Of HumorSometimes, you can diffuse a grouchy situation by responding with humor. Just don’t do this if it can ignite something against you. You don’t want to come across as sassy or a smart alleck. |
| 10 Reasons Why Being A Woman is Great … Posted: 20 Jan 2011 12:19 AM PST I'm going to skip my usual, mile long introductions today and just say that the point of this post today is to remind ourselves why it's so great to be a female. The world would be a much more hairy and, I dare say, less populated place, if there was no women, right? So here's some reasons why it's feels so great to be us: 1. You are allowed to cryYou can cry when you're happy, you can cry when you're sad and even cry when there is absolutely no reason to do so. And nobody will call you a sissy because of it! There is no social or traditional norm that says we can't cry our hearts out but there's not a single one that says we must cry either. So, I guess we have a freedom of choice, don't we? 2. We can't get lostActually, we can, but even if that happens there's a 99% chance we won't spend a lot of time being lost. Why? Because we won't drive around in circles asking ourselves how could that happen and trying to persuade people in the car that "we know the road" and that "this house only looks like the one we passed by 30 minutes ago". We will stop and ASK for directions. 3. You create lifeYes, there is a lot of pain involved in it and you do feel sick enough to think, "Oh, God, maybe this was not such a good idea after all" but the moment it's all over and you get to see your baby, everything makes sense. YOU did it! You couldn't do it on your own (yes, men, we DO appreciate your contribution, don't worry), but you can still rightfully take the credits for 98% of the job done. If the kid is doing good at school you can always say, "Well, of course, that's my child!" and, if things aren't going so great you can always send him to the PTA meeting with the words, "That's your child, too!" |
| 8 Beautiful Honeysuckle Items for the Home … Posted: 19 Jan 2011 10:39 PM PST By now, you have probably heard that Honeysuckle is the color of the year. This is according to Pantone, of course. They are the color authority, apparently. And while it may be a tad over the top to repaint your whole house honeysuckle or any shade near it this year, I think it’s fun to add items in this color. These are small things, saving you from a fight that might ensue if you happen to have a boyfriend/husband who hates pink. 1. Heart Measuring Cup
Price: $12 at urbanoutfitters Unless the boyfriend or husband is the bigger kitchen master in your home, this heart measuring cup will surely be a big hit. This is made of sturdy melamine and features 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup, and 1 cup hearts. Valentine’s Day is coming up so you might want to buy this set soon and use it to bake something lovely for your significant other. 2. Buddha Peace BankPrice: $10 at urbanoutfitters How cute is this guy? I like keeping a coin bank. In fact, I am currently in search of a good coin bank to replace the one I just broke (it wasn’t the type with a bottom stopper). This Buddha bank may be my next coin depository. The color sure is lovely. His expression is super cute, too! 3. Ornate Rose FramePrice: $18 at urbanoutfitters This gorgeous piece also comes in white, black, and turquoise. If you want something subdued and will complement the ornate design, getting this frame in white or black will be perfect. But if you are aiming for that fun and cheerful look, this shade of honeysuckle is what we recommend. 4. Polka Dot CollarPrice: $14.95 at crate&barrel Of course your pet should be trendy, too! This fabulous collar is made of heavy-duty plastic snap buckle and webbing. This is machine washable, too. For sure, your favorite furry friend will be catching some canine-lovers’ eyes when you take her out for a walk wearing this collar. Other dogs would not care, of course, because they don’t see colors they way we do. |
| Posted: 19 Jan 2011 12:25 PM PST Sometimes TV love gets iconic. Sometimes, it’s even inspirational. Now, these are my 7 favorite beloved TV couples. Most of them are pretty old school, because I am still waiting to see if House and Cuddy stay together, or if Bones and Booth get a clue. Maybe these will bring back some pleasant memories though! 1. Cliff and Clair HuxtableThese two are my all time favorites. I still watch reruns of The Cosby Show to see their dynamic. They are the bomb and the bee’s knees all in one. I loved the chemistry between these two, so much so that I think they should have starred together in everything for all time. So much love! I was always rather surprised the actors didn’t get together in real life. 2. Dan and Roseanne ConnerI love John Goodman, and I adored him as Dan Conner. I won’t lie, Roseanne probably would have gotten on my nerves if it wasn’t for Dan, but the two of them together worked, even when it seemed like the characters were doomed. That’s what I loved so much, I think: the gritty realism, which could be so heartbreaking even while it made me laugh. 3. Ricky and Lucy RicardoThe relationship between Lucy and Desi was tempestuous off screen, but onscreen, Lucy and Ricky were adorable. I always found it odd that they slept in separate beds but still managed to have little Ricky (ditto the next couple), but I was young and naïve at the time. These two onscreen were magic. There’s a reason TV Land still shows 405945 reruns a day, you know. |
