Posted: 28 Jan 2011 11:49 AM PST Come on, we’re women! What woman wouldn’t love to eat out over having to slave in the kitchen for hours, right? But we’re women, which means that weight loss is ever present on our minds. So how does one combine those two important things – eating out and weight loss? Read on to find out! 1. Choose Salad Photo Credit: NateVenture Just because you’re eating out doesn’t mean that you can’t choose a healthy dish! And what could be more healthy (and more delicious!) than a beautiful salad? Colorful and so yummy, and totally healthy! Can’t beat that, can you? And you can find salads at just about any place you choose to eat – even McDonalds! 2. Research Photo Credit: manux0 So many restaurants have a web page with menu information. Why not spend 20 minutes looking over the menu, so you have your healthy food choice picked out before you go. This will eliminate the chance for you to cave in your weakest moment of smelling the food. Go in, ready to order, and don’t even glance at the menu there – you already know what you want, right? 3. Beware of the “Little Extras”Photo Credit: remino Words like “breaded”, “gravy”, “cream sauce” or “extra toppings” should be avoided! Extras like these mean extra fat and calories that you want to avoid! Stick to the plain and simple!
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 11:37 AM PST Dumb jokes are fun, don’t you think? So many of them tickle my funny bone, even though they’re real groaners. These are the top 6 lame jokes that make me laugh. I’m serious, most of them are really awful – so if they make you laugh too, be sure to say so! I don’t want to be alone! 1. The Canada Joke Photo Credit: Lone Primate Three men were hiking in the wilds north of America, in the country that is now known as Canada. They gradually realize that they are exploring undiscovered territory. Man 1 looks at his buddies, clearly excited. "I think we discovered a new land, eh!" He says enthusiastically. "We’re venturing where no men have ever gone before, eh," Man 2 agrees, also excited. "Let’s name it," Man 3 decides. "We’ll each pick a letter, so it’ll be fair, eh!" The three of them agree to this method, and Man 1 begins. "C, eh," Man 1 starts. "N, eh," Man 2 continues. "D, eh," Man 3 finishes. And that’s how Canada got its name! I know, that’s really horrible, right? I read that in a joke book when I was eight years old, and it’s still my favorite. It’s actually the thing that first sparked my love of Canada, and made me so determined to visit the country one day. For the record, even at eight, I was well aware that Canadians do not say "eh" after everything – but I did make my Canadian friend spit water when I shared it with him! 2. The Pseudo Poo Joke Photo Credit: steve white 1111 What’s brown and sticky? A stick. What? It is! 3. Blueberry Hill Photo Credit: educationav.com.auOne day, Johnny is late coming to class. His teacher immediately asks him to explain his tardiness. "I was on top of Blueberry Hill," Johnny explains, then goes to take his seat. Ben was even later than Johnny. When he got to class, his teacher demanded to know what had made him late. "I was on top of Blueberry Hill," he answered, then went to take his seat. Danny was late as well. When he finally came to class, the teacher also demanded to know where he’d been. His answer was the same as Johnny’s and Ben’s. Just as Danny took his seat, a little girl walked into the classroom; she was the latest of all. The teacher rolled her eyes and said, "Let me guess. You’re late because you were on top of Blueberry Hill." "No, ma’am," the little girl replied, "I AM Blueberry Hill!" Awful, right? To be fair, I first read that in One True Thing, by Anna Quindlen. And promptly, literally, LMAO’d.
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 11:25 AM PST In 2007-2010, many people have lost their jobs. Lay offs did not just happen in the United States of America; it also happened in other parts of the world. Many who thought they had security in their jobs were jarred from their current reality and thrust into another called unemployment. After that experience, it seems like getting laid off is no longer something that can only happen to slackers and incompetent people. And the truth of the matter is getting laid off can happen to anyone especially when the world has not fully recovered from the recession. I am not saying that you might get laid off any time soon. But with the events in the past years, it is important to know what you should do if you do get laid off. 1. Document everythingMake sure that you have a copy of your severance document. You also need to write down everything your employer says regarding your termination. You can use these documents as leverage for negotiating your severance package or even in a possible wrongful termination lawsuit.2. Get what is due to youYou don't want to seem like you are going after the company's money but you do want to get the money you deserve. If you have unused paid leaves, make sure that you are getting paid for them. If you have any work-related expenses, have them reimbursed as soon as you can. If you are allowed to, negotiate for a better severance package.3. Don't rant or be bitter in front of managementWhen you find out that you are getting laid off, don't go ranting and cursing in front of your employer. Keep your emotions and thoughts in check so that you don't end up doing or saying anything that you might regret. When you leave the company, you want to leave with your dignity intact. You don't want to leave a bad impression or create a bad reputation because chances are, you will meet your bosses and coworkers again.
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 11:07 AM PST Do you support a cause like animal welfare or gay rights? Or maybe you want to campaign on an issue of local importance, such as opposing the building of a supermarket? The most important factor is bringing attention to the cause – if people don't know about it, nothing will change. Even if they do know about it, change doesn't happen without support. So here are some ways to promote a cause. 1. PublicityPeople need to know about your cause. These days, it is easy to set up a website, which is an excellent means of promotion, as people like to look on the internet. So publicise the website address wherever possible. Also, don't forget the local media, who are always interested in stories about local topics.2. Non-Violent MeansYes, you want attention, but the right kind of attention. As seen in the recent 'student' riots in the UK (where many of the protestors weren't even students), causing damage created negative publicity. Violence is never justified, and is counter-productive.3. Social MediaThese are a great new tool. Just be certain that the information you publish is accurate, as many Facebook groups spring up campaigning on a particular issue, but are based on accusations later discovered to be false. However, social media can be used to disseminate urgent appeals.
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 09:57 AM PST Cell phones have officially infiltrated every walk of life – and now it’s all about smartphones. They’re like super cell phones, of course, because they do everything and give you many more opportunities to kind of ostracize the people around you. It’s easy to do even if you don’t necessarily mean to. The good news is that these 8 rules of etiquette for smartphone users can help you work your phone and still be cool. 1. Be Considerate to OthersYou’d think this one goes without saying, but … yeah, not so much. This means being considerate to the people you call as well as the people around you. Yeah, you have IM capabilities and all that, but that doesn’t mean you should try to contact a boss, client, or colleague after work hours. And don’t expect an answer right away, either. Always make sure, instead, to ask someone if they have time to talk.2. The Rule of Business HoursTypically, business hours are 9am to 5pm. However, not everyone works such standard hours anymore. Etiquette dictates that, in general, it’s cool to get in contact with someone between 7am and 9pm. You don’t want to be texting or IMing or emailing someone from your smartphone late at night.3. Don’t Text EveryoneYou can text your friends and family members, of course. As long as you follow the aforementioned rules, it’s also completely cool to shoot your work friends and coworkers a text message or two. However, you may not want to try that with your boss or with any of your employers. Why is that? Well…
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 09:46 AM PST One of the best way to keep your New Year’s resolutions is to make them public. That way, you can’t put them off or forget about them. So, I am going one better than sharing them with my friends and family. I’m sharing them here, so there will be hundreds of thousands of people aware of what I want to do in 2011. Don’t let me forget about any of this, y’all, ’cause here are 7 New Year’s Resolutions I now have to keep. 1. Lose WeightThis is a biggie. Like, I have to do this, because it’s always on my list of resolutions and I never come through on it. There are a variety of reasons I want to lose weight, starting with getting healthy, which is the most important, and ending with wanting to look good. Most of all I want to feel good about myself, and there are just way too many days now where I am just not happy.2. Drink More WaterThis is a bad one. I hate water, I don’t know why. I’ve gotten good about drinking naturally flavored waters, so that’s good, but I still need to drink more. Water is so good for you, I know that, and I still can’t make myself drink a lot of it.3. Eat Healthier FoodsI don’t eat a lot of junk food, and since moving to MA, I have pretty much cut fast food out of my diet, mainly because the nearest Taco Bell is ridiculously far away. Still, more poultry and fish, more raw vegetables, more fruits, and things like that, they all need to be seriously incorporated into my diet this year.
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 08:52 AM PST Roller derby is so much more than fishnets, catfights and alter egos. Taking up the sport, I gained incredible athletic ability, lifelong friendships and a certain mental and physical toughness unimagined – at least in my lifetime! I look fear in the face with each practice. And hip check away any residual anxiety. Here are six more awesome things you probably didn't know about roller derby (and would not have learned by watching "Whip it!"). 1. It's RealStop me if you've heard this before, "…but roller derby is staged!" While certain influences seem to lend to the world of entertainment wrestling, trust me when I say that the skating, hitting and strategy is real. We train extensively as a team – and as individuals – to be part of roller derby.2. WFTDAWFTDA is the guiding organization, founded in 2004, to connect and regulate all the teams across the country (and a few internationally). The non-profit set the rules and safety standards used in the game and promote both the growth of the sport and athleticism with women worldwide. Currently, there are 105 leagues members recognized under the Women's Flat Track Derby Association – and 46 leagues currently working their way through an apprentice program — which are pre-set into specific divisions and compete towards an end-of-the-season championship bout.3. Pay to PlayBy the skater and for the skater. There are no paid athletes in this sport and there are no individual sponsorships. While some sponsorships do exist – and varies between leagues – most participating women have another full-time career to pay for the sport. Each league is a start-up organization in every sense, and every woman volunteers her time and spends her own money to be a part of a team.
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 08:49 AM PST These cute gadgets are affordable, weight only a kilo, can do anything a normal laptop can and are available in all colors possible. I'm using a tiny, red one to type this blog and I must tell you this – laying in bed, having my coffee and writing has never been more fun! Here's why I would recommend it to anybody: 1. LightweightLaptop is heavy and dragging it around with you can cause back problems. Netbook, in the other hand, weights only a kilo ( about 4 normal sized oranges), so you can put it in your tote and forget you even have it with you. You don't have to worry about forgetting it somewhere and you don't have to take it with you only when you have something to do. It’s sort of like an ace up your sleeve. Lol!2. Ideal for travelingYou travel a lot? No problem! Your tiny netbook will be there in case you need something. You can watch movies or browse the internet anywhere, you won't need any extra space to store it and you can open and manage your little gadget even in a jam-packed plane or a bus.3. Instant internet accessSome netbooks feature Android of Linux systems that load fast and provide all basic tools you'll need to browse the internet, download the things you need or update your status on all social networks you use. These additions are ideal for those that need to spend a lot of time online but refuse to let this affect their busy social life.
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 08:38 AM PST Speed dating began in a little café in 1998 and has come a long way since then. Many large cities have locations where speed dating takes place on a regular basis. Men and women both participate in speed dating. If you are looking into this type of dating service, then you might want to take a look at the 8 tips on speed dating that I've offered below. They just might come in handy with your new venture. 8. Be confident when meeting a new personThere's no reason to be shy. You just met this person and might never see him/her again, so why not at least pretend to have some confidence? If you are seriously looking for a date, then portraying yourself as the confident type might increase your chances of getting a date from this speed dating session.7. Dress niceI don't know about you, but I tend to be more interested in people who look like they care about their appearance. You don't have to drag out your fanciest outfit to go to a speed dating meeting. If you wear something that is clean, not riddled with holes, and doesn't look like it was picked up off of the bedroom floor, then you are probably not going to receive any odd stares regarding your outfit.6. Smile and be pleasantWho wants to get to know someone who has an attitude like Eeyore? I'd prefer to get to know someone who looked like he/she wasn't participating in speed dating against his/her will. A smile truly can ease the tension between two people, especially when meeting for the first time.
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 08:27 AM PST All people who date, at least once in their life, will go through a break up. Break ups are never fun to go through and they are not expected to be. Of course, there are some things one can do that will make things even worse when they are going through a breakup. I am going to give you 8 worst things to do after a breakup … 8. Keep Remnants of the Relationship Sitting AroundNow, I am not telling you to go burn every last thing that you have left from the relationship. I am not telling you to rip it up. You never know if you still have a future together and you don't want to regret this if the two of you were to get together. What you need to do is box everything up and put it in the basement or some place where you will not find it. Perhaps, the trunk of the car?7. Stop Taking Care of YourselfCome on, you do not need to stop taking care of yourself. You need to keep on looking forward.6. Continue Sleeping with the ExWhen you break up with someone, you do not want to continue sleeping with them. This will definitely be sending the wrong message to them. If you broke up, then you need to be apart – not together.
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 06:46 AM PST Have you ever stopped and wondered what the guy thinks during sex? I have. Some of the things that go through their minds are out of this world and a woman would never wonder why they are thinking what they are thinking. Of course, guys from the same way about us women, they always wonder what women are thinking and why they’re thinking what they are thinking. Between the two, we may never be able to understand each other. However, I bet I have 7 things he’s thinking during sex. 7. Man, I'm SweatingWow, it’s really hot in here. Sweat is pouring off of my face. It’s also on my back and some other places that I am not going to mention. Oh well, I hope she doesn’t mind. At least, it doesn’t seem like she minds too much right now.6. What’s That on the WallOkay, this may sound bit strange, but I’m sure at one point in time sometime during his life, he, if you’re laying there staring straight wouldn’t you notice something you have never noticed before on the wall?5. I Hope She Doesn't Think She is Spending the NightOkay, after this one, I have plans! I really hope she does not think she’s going to stay the night. I mean, I’m not a mean type of guy but I don’t know there is just something about having a woman stayed the night.
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 06:39 AM PST I'm no donut connoisseur, but I would love to travel around the country on a donut taste-testing spree. I wonder if I'd be sick of donuts by the time I made it back home again. I wonder how old I'd be by the time I actually made it back home! Here are the 8 best donut places in America that I'd recommend trying out. 8. Voodoo DoughnutI just liked the sound of this donut shop. Not only is the name of the business catchy, but the names of some of the donuts are as well. For instance, who wouldn't be excited about ordering a Dirty Snowball? This is a chocolate donut that is covered in marshmallow glaze that is dyed pink. There is even a cake donut that is topped with Fruit Loops. I would consider this place to be one of the more artsy donut shops, not just in Portland, Oregon, but just about anywhere.7. Round Rock DonutsIf you are looking for a donut at 4am, then look no further. This donut shop is open at 4am and is located in Round Rock, Texas. The owners of this shop have been in business since 1926. The charge for a basic glazed donut is 59 cents and donut holes are 1.49 a dozen. These are prices I'd be up for paying for a 4 am donut for sure!6. Your Spudnuts ShopLocated in Mentor, Ohio, this is one of many locations around the US that sells donuts made with potato flour. The technique of mixing potato flour into the donut mix started in the late 1930s in Salt Lake City, Utah. The result was a lighter donut. These donuts were sought out by many. This particular Spudnuts bakery has been ran by the same family for nearly 40 years. They are well known for their cinnamon rolls that are the size of a dinner plate. Now that's a lot of goodness!
Posted: 28 Jan 2011 05:44 AM PST Don't you hate wondering why he hasn't popped the big question? I can think of lots of reasons why a guy would be hesitant about asking for a woman's hand in marriage. Here are some suggestions as to why he might be dragging his feet. The following list contains 8 reasons he has not proposed to you. Of course, the easiest way to find out is to simply ask him what the hold up is! 8. He can't make up his mindI know plenty of guys that want to get married, but they also want to stay single. It's like they are having in inner war with themselves. One day they are gung-ho about marriage and the next day they are perfectly happy with the way things already are. You just might have a fickle man on your hands.7. He's scared out of his witsGuys always act all tough and macho, but there are plenty of things that they are scared of. Marriage happens to be one of these things. I'm not saying all guys are terrified of marriage. There are a select few who relish the idea of getting married to the woman of their dreams. Others tend to break into cold sweats at the thought of getting married.6. He's changed his mind, but doesn't know how to tell youIn my opinion, this is one of the most heartbreaking reasons of all. I've been fortunate enough to not have to experience this reason first-hand, but I've felt empathy for the ladies in movies who are on the receiving end of this type of news.
Posted: 27 Jan 2011 11:27 PM PST A few weeks ago, I noticed how horribly destroyed and filthy my boyfriend's wallet it. He's probably had it longer than his sons have been alive, and it's a wreck, a pitiful excuse for a billfold. This began my search for a replacement for him, and my new love of all things Toddland, especially their wallets. They're stylish, vegan-friendly, and most of them feature one the marks of a true man: a moustache. Here are 8 great Toddland wallets for him… 1. Toddland Moustache Wallet Price: $24.00 at urbanoutfitters.com Clearly inspired by the awesome 'staches of the 1970s and 80s, this grey faux leather wallet features plaid detailing on the inside, lots of slots for debit cards and such, and (coolest of all) a vinyl moustache for adding macho to your own ID. 2. Toddland Curls for Girls Wallet Price: $24.00 at urbanoutfitters.com You don't wear that moustache because the ladies love it, although they do. You wear it for YOU. Celebrate your facial hair with this wallet, which is made of faux leather and includes a handy tip card, so you can focus more on your 'stache and the ladies who love it, and less on math. 3. Toddland Yo Gabba Gabba Cast Wallet Price: $36.00 at urbanoutfitters.com Some things are better together, like peanut butter and jelly, cookies and milk, and Yo Gabba Gabba and Toddland, perhaps the most awesome combination of all. This vinyl wallet features the cast of the show and a collectible (and sweet) card with the crew, too.
