| 8 Tips for Flattering Your Face … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 11:31 AM PST There are lots of things you can do to make your face look its best. I’m obsessed with this topic because I have a round little face, and certain things make it look even rounder, and I am just not down with that. I don’t like that in my Kool-Aid. So, I searched out 8 tips for flattering your face that really helped me – and I hope they’ll help you too! 1. Know the Shape of Your Face
Photo Credit: sara kiesling This is the most important. You have to know the shape of your face. Is it heart shaped or oval? Is it round or square? Faces can even be rectangular. Knowing the shape of your face will have an impact on all the following tips, so you need to be sure from the get go. 2. Haircut
Photo Credit: Sadie Shooter Once you know the shape of your face, you’ll have a better idea of what haircuts will work for you. For instance, this round face right here? It cannot carry off super short hairstyles. I know. I tried. I attempted to work a femme faux hawk once, as I think I have shamefacedly mentioned before, and it did not work. Like, by any stretch of the imagination. I can’t do really long hair either, it just weighs the whole face down. 3. Hair Color
Photo Credit: ► Nicole ! Hair color can be very flattering – or very not. If you’re very, very pale and not a natural blond, for example, then blond hair is probably going to wash out your skin, your eyes, et cetera. Certain shades of red will look gorgeous, however, and dark brown can make pale skin and pale eyes really pop. There are certain shades of darker skin that can rock literally any color, from black all the way to platinum, and gold tones have their choice of the color spectrum as well. |
| 10 Ways to Defuse an Argument … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 11:20 AM PST Arguments happen, they happen to everyone. They can easily get out of hand if you aren’t careful or don’t know what to do to keep yourself and the other person calm. It’s when an argument disintegrates that things get really ugly – but no argument has to be that way. The following 10 ways to defuse an argument may be able to help you the next time one arises. 1. Never criticize the personIt’s sometimes all too easy to criticize the person you’re arguing with, rather than criticizing the subject of the argument. If you have to criticize, remember first of all to make it constructive. Secondly, always remember to criticize things, not people. You don’t want to be criticized; neither do they. 2. Different opinions are okayThis one is difficult, and we all probably have this problem at some point. It’s tempting to think that just because someone’s opinion is different from yours, then they are wrong by default. This is not true. No opinion is right or wrong; it’s right for the person who holds it, period. Otherwise, opinions are just opinions. Everyone has them and they are going to be different. Accept that. Don’t assume you are right just because you think something is a bad idea, or disagree. 3. Every person deserves respectYou deserve respect. The person you are arguing with deserves respect as well. Do not be disrespectful, and don’t allow yourself to be disrespected either. During an argument, it really is a good idea to treat others the way you want to be treated. |

| 7 Reasons Not to Get a Divorce … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 10:05 AM PST I will admit it, there are some good and bad reasons for divorce. I am going to make this a positive post by giving you 7 reasons not to get a divorce. Personally, I do not believe in getting a divorce. I know, it's easy for me to say, but I think things will always be worth working out on my end. I mean, sure, if you have a cheating partner, it may be difficult to get through, but we're not the cheating type – we keep to ourselves. 7. FinancesSome will tell you that finances get worse when you get divorced. I'm not really sure about this one, but it does make since. It's a lot easier to handle things together, instead of handling things by yourself. However, money is not the only reason you should stay together. 6. It CostsOh goodness does it cost! Have you looked at just how much a divorce will cost you? Then, you have to look at the cost of an attorney and all of that good stuff that comes along with it. Do you think it's worth it? Perhaps working things out would be the best option. 5. You'll be Dating AgainI would not like this one. When you've been married for so long, it will be hard to get out there in the dating game again. If you get a divorce, then you will more than likely end up dating again. Then, you will have to learn about an individual all over again, when you already went through it once. |
| 8 Things That Inspire Me to Write … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 10:04 AM PST I've always enjoyed writing, whether it was stories, poems, letters, or blogs. I like the way words let me express my feelings. It's fun to describe a situation or scene to others and have them see almost exactly what you are seeing as they read the description. Here are 8 things that inspire me to write. If you enjoy writing too, then I bet some of the things on this list are also inspirations to you. 8. The need to express my opinionI'm not a very talkative person, but I do still like to express my opinion about something. However, instead of getting into heated debates like the ones my husband is so good at, I find it much easier to do my expressing in the written form. It's much easier to backspace and rewrite something in a clearer manner than to try and erase something I've just said out loud. 7. To entertainI entertain my grandmother with weekly letters about the goings on around here. Between the kids and the animals, there always seems to be plenty to talk about. She lives all alone and she once told me that she looks forward to my letters each week. It gives her something exciting and funny to read about. I love making my sweet little grandmother happy! 6. The chance to make new friendsI've made so many new friends because of writing. Not only am I able to meet knew people when I write something that they associate with and respond to, but I can also keep in better contact with my current friends. |
| 8 Reasons Why a Woman Needs her Girlfriends … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 09:56 AM PST Every woman needs her girlfriends, whether she is single or in a relationship. Finding and sharing our thoughts, views, problems and concerns with like-minded woman fortifies us to face the world every day. No matter what comfort men provide, sometimes girls just want to be girls and that can only be possible with your girlfriends. Here are some of the essential reasons why a woman needs her girlfriends. 1. To have someone to go shoppingShopping with a man is one of the most excruciating experiences one can ever have, second only to childbirth. Men don't have the patience to stand around and tell us how we look as we try on 10 to 12 outfits. A woman needs her girlfriends, because just like her, they love to shop. They will give you honest opinions on how you look allowing you to walk away with a flattering and fabulous choice. 2. To have someone for all your ventingWomen put up with so much. First there are our husbands who refuse to do anything in the house. Then there are kids who are always looking for new ways to rebel. Then there's our chauvinistic boss at work who can never appreciate what we do. Who can we turn to vent – our girlfriends because let's face it; no one else has the patience or interest. 3. To watch chick flicksChick flicks were created for women to bond and men to let us bond. Try getting a man to sit through 'Stepmom' or 'Bridget Jones' Diary'; he will be out the door before the starting credits. Going with your girlfriends on the other hand gives you a chance to enjoy the movie with likeminded souls who will have oodles to talk about when it's done. |
| 8 Beauty Lies Told By the Media … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 09:49 AM PST Beauty is something that media and businesses have capitalized on for the longest time. Their self-serving interests have led them to spread lies and to create twisted perceptions on what "beauty" is supposed to be. These people tell women around the world that there is a cookie cutter beauty and if they don't fit in the mold, they are not beautiful. That is the first lie that they have told you and there are many more that they have camouflaged in advertisements, billboards, magazines, and shows. In this list are the most common lies that media feeds women about beauty. 1. Thin is BeautifulThis is probably one of the most prevalent and most damaging lie that the media has ever told. To be beautiful is to be thin, and to be thin is to be beautiful. There are many men and women who diet and exercise themselves to exhaustion… all in the name of becoming thin. Our culture is a culture of thinness. And even though we are becoming more accepting of curvy women, I think it will be a long time before we completely eradicate the mentality that thin is beautiful. 2. Be Tall and ProudOur society believes that if you are tall, you are beautiful. Why must designers always make clothes that require tall women to model? Why do we hear or read comments like this – "At 5'2, this latina spitfire is still melting hearts." (About Selma Hayek from an entertainment site) Do you have to be tall to impress and to be loved by people? 3. Shapely and PerkyMajority of the women we see on magazines, movies, and television possess shapely and perky breasts. It's as if they are exempt from gravity, aging, and natural sagging. Because we see these women all the time, we are led to believe that this is how our breasts should look: shapely and perky. If they don't look that way, they are ugly and undesirable. |
| Posted: 05 Feb 2011 09:32 AM PST I've been dealing with OCD for most of my adult life, and though it doesn't interfere with my everyday life, one peek into my closet and it's obvious: I have a thing for organization. I'm not alone, either: there are hundreds of thousands of my fellow Americans who also have some form of OCD, and that includes a long list of celebs. Some of them might surprise you, too! Here are 7 celebrities with OCD. 1. Howie Mandell
Photo Credit: ctv.ca Howie Mandell was the first celeb I ever heard of who has OCD, and his compulsion is all about germs. Can you blame him? In his role as a game show host, he meets so many people, from so many places… that's a LOT of germs! Now I want to wash my hands all the time, too… 2. Billy Bob ThorntonPhoto Credit: humormeblog.beloblog.com As talented as he is, Billy Bob Thornton deals with a pretty extraordinary form of OCD, his having to do with numbers. He compulsively figures numbers he encounters, and has certain superstitions about them, especially the ages of his children. I loathe math — this would be an awful compulsion to have! 3. Megan Fox
Photo Credit: fanpop.com Megan Fox revealed in May that she hates dirt… but her obsession goes further than that. She refuses to use cutlery in restaurants (does she bring her own?) or use public restrooms (can you blame her?). Her compulsion doesn't seem to impact her life in general though… as long as she can carry her own silverware in her handbag, and doesn't ever have to use the restroom while she's out and about, she ought to be fine, right? |
| 7 Reasons we Love Cheryl Cole … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 08:59 AM PST If you don't know the name of Cheryl Cole you soon will as she is due to be one of the judging panel on USA X Factor, Simon Cowell's alternative to American Idol. Cheryl is a former talent show winner herself having been one of the singers chosen to form Girl's Aloud on a UK series of Pop Idol. She's a darling of the press and all of us in the UK and let's hope you take care of her because she is only on loan. 1. She's pretty normal… as celebrities go. She lives in the limelight but she is no sleaze magnet. All throughout her much publicized break up from top English soccer star Ashley Cole she remained a picture of dignity. And she's a friend of the second British Royal family – the Beckhams. 2. She's a proud GeordieGeordie is the name of people hailing from Tyneside (Newcastle) in NE England. They speak with a funny accent and Geordie girls have a reputation of being the most scantily clad party animals in the UK. Even in freezing temperatures, skimpy tops are the order of the day. 3. She's got a signature moveIt might have started as a bit of a gag when she wore a militariesque outfit in her first solo video but the salute she used then has now become her trademark. |

| Posted: 05 Feb 2011 08:55 AM PST Where there's a President, there's a First Lady. Some of them tend towards staying discreetly in the background, and just smiling prettily at official functions, while others gather more press inches than their husbands. Here are some First Ladies who have achieved a great deal for various reasons … 1. Hillary Clinton
Photo Credit: treehugger.com Personally, in Hillary's position I'd have had Bill's bits on a plate, but Mrs Clinton is pretty steely in her own way. You wonder how he even dared! Hillary is definitely not the kind of woman you'd want to pick a fight with – watch out world if she ever does become President … 2. Carla Bruni
Photo Credit: telegraph.co.uk It does seem as though Carla set all out to become the French First Lady. There's something not terribly likeable about her, and she doesn't seem the kind of person you'd want to argue with (not if you wanted to keep in Sarko's good graces). 3. Chantal Biya
Photo Credit: chantalbiyahair.tumblr.com I only know one thing about the First Lady of Cameroon – that amazing hair! Chantal qualifies to be on this list for that one reason alone. Anyone who can support such a heavy hairpiece must be made of strong stuff. You probably wouldn't want to pick a fight with her either (although she seems much more genial than Carla). |
| 8 of My Favorite Style Tips and Tricks … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 07:05 AM PST Nobody is perfect, not even famous Hollywood divas – if you don't believe me, take a close look at their photos and you'll see for yourself. Now, the reason why these ladies look so great is because they have a stylist to tell them what to wear. Well, I say we, the normal, non celeb gals, can look just as good and in some cases even better! We just have to know what to wear and how to wear it. So here's some tips I'd like to share with you today… 1. Crooked legs? Where?
Photo Credit: chiarashine All the women in my family were "blessed" with a pair of X-shaped legs and a pair of big boobs. All except me, of course, I just got a pair of crooked legs… guess boobs were out of stock at that time. So, here's what I do to fix my little flaw (yes… little – it's not a big deal and I refuse to let it bother me too much, nobody is perfect)- I pick skinny jeans styles that are not too tight from the knees down and I wear strictly flesh color pantyhose -prints and dark colors accent the leg shape, revealing the things you don't want seen. Oh, yeah, and the strangest thing ever – I try to avoid pointy shoes when wearing shorter skirts and dresses. Now, I have no idea why is that so, but I noticed that round toe shoes make legs appear more straight! 2. Belt it!
Photo Credit: pearled Want a more feminine waist? Make one! Yup, it's as simple as that! Not all of us were born with a perfect hourglass figure, which, of course, doesn't mean we have no means of getting it. So, if you feel like your waistline could use some upgrading, simply pick a flattering dress, tunic or sweater and don't forget to belt it. The catch is to strategically place the belt by picking the place where your waist is the slimmest. It may be your waistline, and if that's the case, pick a wider belt and opt for darker colors. If the measuring tape says that the slimmest place is right under your bust, pick a narrow belt but make sure it stands out. This last one will visually shorten your torso but, don't worry, those inches are not lost – your legs will appear longer! |
| 7 Ways to Encourage Your Partner … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 06:37 AM PST It can be hard to offer encouragement, no matter how much you love someone. Your partner may want to quit a job or start a new one, buy a new car, go back to school – anything. You may not agree with them or maybe you just aren’t sure how to properly offer encouragement. There are, fortunately, dozens of ways you can do it, but here are 7 ways to encourage your partner to start out with. 1. Listen PatientlyListening is always important – and so is staying patient. No matter what your partner wants to do, you should listen to the whole story. That is, after all, the only way you can actually find out the full story. It is important to listen to everything your partner wants to share with you before you do anything else. 2. Offer Unconditional LoveThis is pretty much a given. However, when you don’t agree with someone’s choices, it is easy to get frustrated. Sometimes that frustration can come off badly. It can even seem like you are saying that you will not feel the same about your partner if he or she does something with which you don’t agree. That’s most likely not the case, of course, so just remember: love your partner unconditionally and make sure it shows. 3. Allow VentingSometimes, you just need to vent – and so does your partner. He or she may not even be making a decision, but rather could be just trying to work through feelings. Invite that, be a sounding board, even if it just means listening and not offering an opinion right away. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just want the Better Half to listen to me; I don’t wan a solution, I just want to get my feelings off my chest. |
| 7 Remedies to Relieve a Sore Throat … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 06:24 AM PST Having a sore throat tends to make me rather grouchy. I've listed 7 remedies to relieve a sore throat for you to use the next time your throat is scratchy or achy. I've tried them all and of course some work better than others, depending on the severity of the soreness. While most of these remedies are common ones people tend to use, there might be a couple you haven't tried yet. 7. Spray the sore areas with medicated throat sprayI have a bottle of this stuff stationed next to my bed all winter long. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with a scratchy throat, due to the dryness in the house. It's much easier to reach over for the throat spray and squirt it a couple of times at the back of my throat. There's nothing that I've found to relieve a scratchy throat quicker than the numbing throat spray sold in the grocery store. 6. Suck on a cough dropA handful of cough drops accompany me wherever I go during the colder months of the year. I find that even the cheap brand of cough drops help quite a bit when my throat is mildly sore. If I have a severely sore throat, then I go for the more expensive medicated brands. The hard part about this kind of cough drop is that I have to remember how many hours it has been between each one. 5. Drink a cup of licorice teaLicorice tea with a couple of squirts of honey or agave nectar does wonders for a sore throat. There are other benefits to consuming licorice root, besides helping soothe your throat. The root of the licorice plant is also good for colds, the flu, coughs, chronic fatigue, and viral infections, which sometimes come along with a sore throat. |
| 8 Inspiring Celebrity Cancer Survivors … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 06:10 AM PST The first time someone hears they have cancer, their mind goes blank. They start to feel as if they are already dead. The next question is "how long do I have left?" This is harsh. There are many out there that survive cancer and maybe, just maybe you can be one of those – but you have to have the strength and courage to move forward so you can be amongst the survivors. I have lost relatives to cancer – it's sad, I know. Below, I am going to give you 8 inspiring celebrity cancer survivors and I really do hope this post reaches the right people, so if you know anyone who is currently struggling with cancer, please point them towards this blog. 8. Colin Powell
Photo Credit: nydailynews.com This is a retired United States Army General. From 2001-2003 he held the position of sixty fifty Secretary of State under President George W. Bush. During the year 2003, when he was 66 years old, he had the cancerous prostate gland taken out. Now, he is known as a cancer survivor and a mighty strong one, if I might add. 7. Rod Stewart
Photo Credit: mirror.co.uk Everyone knows Rod Stewart, right? No? Well, let me give you an introduction – he is a British singer and song-writer. During a check up in 2001, a malignant growth was found on his thyroid gland in his throat. The cancer has been surgically removed. 6. Sharon Osbourne
Photo Credit: nydailynews.com Sharon Osbourne is the wife of Ozzie Osbourne – we all know those two, right? During the year 2002, when she was fifty years old, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Chemotherapy and surgery helped treat it. Since then, there has been no recurrence. |
| 8 Awesome Potato Recipes to Try … Posted: 05 Feb 2011 12:17 AM PST There is always a 5 or sometimes even a 10 pound bag of potatoes in the pantry, which means I have plenty of material to try new recipes with. Potatoes are cheap, nutritious, and easy to cook with. Here are 8 awesome potato recipes to try the next time you are looking for something new to make with potatoes. 8. Baked new potatoes with chives
Photo Credit: steamboatwillie33 I usually make this dish when there are a lot of people to feed, such as during the holidays. Take a 9 x 13 baking dish and lightly coat the bottom with olive oil. Use a pastry brush to make the coat of oil as thin as possible. Wash the new potatoes and slice them almost all the way through in very thin slices. When you finish, the potato should look like you could use it as a recipe card holder for about 6 or 7 cards. Spread a bit of butter or margarine on top of each potato and sprinkle with chives. Bake these at 450 degrees for about 30 minutes. 7. Hashbrown casserole
Photo Credit: JudyinBoston There are many so many different ingredients that can be combined to make this casserole. I like to use either cream of mushroom soup and chunks of cooked chicken or cream of celery soup and chunks of cooked ham. Either use frozen hashbrowns or shred your own potatoes. If you shred your own, then you might want to brown them in a skillet before using them in this recipe. Toss the can of soup and a can of milk with the hashbrowns and meat of your choice. Half and half can be used instead of milk for a creamier consistency. Add spices and layer the hashbrown mix in the dish. Top with shredded cheese of any kind. Bake at 400 for about 25 minutes. 6. German potato salad
Photo Credit: kitchen mama I actually like this type of potato salad much more than the variety that uses mayonnaise or mustard as the base. Boil about 4 cups of peeled and cubed potatoes, drain, and set aside. Mix 2 eggs, a fourth cup of vinegar, a fourth cup of sugar, and a quarter teaspoon of black pepper. Beat these ingredients together and then set them aside for later. Cook 4 to 6 slices of bacon until almost crisp and add a half cup of chopped green pepper and a half cup of diced onion. Cook these ingredients for a few minutes more and then slowly add in the egg mixture that you beat together earlier. Remove from heat and add this egg mix to the potatoes. Toss the concoction lightly together and top with sliced hard-boiled eggs. |
