| 10 Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day … Posted: 03 Apr 2011 11:04 AM PDT Memorial Day is a national holiday devoted to recognizing the brave men and women who have died in defense of our country. It is a day marked by exhibitions of national pride; for example, parades honor the armed forces and graveyards are decorated with American flags flying over the graves of veterans. Sadly some people have lost the true meaning of Memorial Day and simply consider it the official kick off to summer. If you are looking for some ideas for Memorial Day celebrations, the list below may give you inspiration. Here are 10 ways to celebrate Memorial Day. 1. EducatePut real meaning into your holiday celebration; show your patriotism by flying Old Glory and educate your kids about the sacrifices that have been made to give us our freedoms. 2. Plan a Family ReunionGet your family together as a tribute to all the family members who have been lost defending our nation. Celebrate the living by honoring the ones who have been lost. 3. Make a House Call!If you know someone who has lost a loved one to war or who is serving in our armed forces, prepare a meal for them or cut their grass. Kind acts are a thoughtful way to show you appreciate their loved one's sacrifice. |
| 8 Times To Defer Buying A Home … Posted: 03 Apr 2011 10:56 AM PDT Many of us dream of buying our own home. I'd love to have my own place one day instead of renting. However, there are times when renting makes sense, or when buying simply isn't a wise idea. Here are some circumstances when you should put off buying a home … 1. Long-Term PlansBuying a house should be something that is done with the long-term in mind. There's really no point going to the expense of purchasing a home (think of all the extra costs involved) if you don't plan to stay in the area and in the home for at least several years. If you don't know what your long-term plans are, then renting is a better option. 2. FlexibilityIt's often said that rent money is dead money, but being a tenant allows you a good deal more flexibility. What if the opportunity comes up to travel, or you get offered a job in another city – or country? 3. CommitmentBuying a home is the single greatest financial commitment you are ever going to make. So it is vital to be sure that you are in a position to make that commitment, and that you have found a home that you can live in happily and that suits your needs. You can't just change your mind after you've bought it! |
| 8 Things to Buy Instead of Flowers … Posted: 03 Apr 2011 10:52 AM PDT Flowers are great gifts but they do have their downsides, prompting many people to wonder what they can give to loved ones instead of flowers. After all, flowers tend to be expensive – a dozen roses can go for fifty dollars! That wouldn’t be so bad, except that they also begin dying after a few days, which not only makes a mess, but also seems like a waste – and it’s sad! So, here are a few things to buy instead of flowers that you can give to the people you care about the most. 1. Chocolates
Photo Credit: samsfadil I can only speak for myself here, but I’m always down for chocolates over flowers. On those occasions when you’re looking for a romantic gift, whether it’s for a boy or a girl, chocolates are a great option to buy instead of flowers. Everybody loves chocolate, but if the person you’re buying them for doesn’t, then a different kind of candy would still be perfect. 2. Cards
Sometimes words say it best, and with a card, your options are limitless. You can choose a card that says everything you want – Hallmark is a great option for this – or you can pick out a card that is largely blank. That way, you can write your own message and tell the recipient exactly how you feel. 3. Photos
A picture really is worth a thousand words. Often a simply framed photograph of you, or yourself and the recipient, can say everything. You can also think about putting together a photograph. These options make great gifts – and they’ll last forever. |

| 7 Creative Ways to Communicate with a Pen Friend … Posted: 03 Apr 2011 10:23 AM PDT Historically pen friends communicated with each other via post and you could expect a note perhaps once a month because that's how long it took for letters to reach particularly if the pen friend was overseas. Today with the advances in technology there are different ways to communicate with a pen friend, which are more real time and definitely more frequent than once a month. Here are 7 ways to communicate with a pen friend. 1. Writing LettersThe term 'pen friend' was devised as the mode of correspondence was via the pen. Writing letters continues to be an option while communicating with a pen friend however you can consider different delivery options for your letters. You can send it by high-speed mail or courier so that it reaches the recipient sooner than the regular post. You can also fax it across to your pen friend. 2. Sending video-gramsToday any new laptop comes with a webcam so literally anyone can create video-grams at the drop of a hat. Just sit in front of your computer and say your piece. It is easy to send too, via the Internet. Your message will reach your pen friend in seconds, a far cry from the usual time delay of one month. 3. Chatting on social networksThanks to Facebook, Twitter and all the other social networks, there is one more alternative for communicating with your pen friend. You can either send messages to each other using the social media or use the inbuilt chat facility to talk with each other real time. |
| 8 Signs You’re Ready to Get a Puppy … Posted: 03 Apr 2011 10:11 AM PDT Getting a puppy is a huge commitment, ladies. It's totally not something that should be taken lightly. A happy dog needs a ton of attention, both from you and from your vet, and this can be taxing, both on your wallet and in terms of time. I've put together a list of 8 signs you're ready to get a puppy to help you to determine when you'll be able to take on the responsibility. 1. You Have TimeA puppy needs a whole lot of attention, girls, and if you're working nine to five, chances are, you aren't going to have time to give it what it needs. Healthy, happy dogs grow up with lots of human contact and care so if you're potential puppy will have to spend whole working days locked in the kitchen, you're schedule's just not ready for a dog. 2. You Have PatienceThose of you with dogs will know that training one is no easy task. It involves lots of mopping up puddles and disposing of mess, and it also requires that you are infinitely patient. If you're the kind of person who snaps and gets angry all the time –because of stress at work or whatever the reason – you're going to find a puppy very trying. Young dogs respond best to a firm but ultimately forgiving attitude; there's just no place for real anger in training a dog. 3. You Have SpaceEven a little dog needs a substantial amount of room to roam around in. If you're living in an apartment with a concrete yard, your dog will need to be walked a couple of times a day and in a place where it can really stretch its legs and run around. Unless you have a garden, or a vast, dog-friendly park around the corner, you're probably better sticking with a cat for the time being. |

| 10 Most Beautiful Birds from Around the World … Posted: 03 Apr 2011 09:49 AM PDT I've always enjoyed seeing birds in the yard. Most of the birds I see in my area are generally small and monochromatic. I grew up learning about birds from my grandmother and she gave me a bird book when I was still a small child. The birds in this book astounded me. I'd never seen such colors and plumage on anything like them before. Thanks to the Internet, I've been able to explore the bird world even further. Here are what I believe to be the 10 most beautiful birds from around the world. 10. Bohemian Waxwing
I think this bird is greatly overlooked, except by avid bird watchers. The beauty of this bird isn't immediately visible, due to its mostly gray plumage. The Bohemian Waxwing has rose-colored feathers on its face that seem to gradually blend into the rest of its gray body. The tip of the mostly black tail appears to be dipped in vibrant yellow. The tuft at the top the Bohemian Waxwing's head makes it even slightly comical, as well as beautiful. 9. Painted Bunting
The male of this species is colored so randomly that it looks as if someone used the last little bits of paint in the pallet to color him. Female Painted Buntings are sort of an olive green with lighter and darker hues of the same color spread over her plumage. The male, on the other hand, has a bright blue head, brilliant red chest and underside, vibrant yellow shoulders, and small patches of green on the upper wing portions. He is truly a mish-mosh of color. 8. Blue Jay
This happens to be one bird that can be seen in the woods near my home, but not very often. These birds can be bullies to smaller birds. My family and I often refer to them as The Beasties. They can be heard taunting one another and then are usually seen chasing a smaller bird through the trees. The bright blue feathers that are intermingled with black bars and tipped with white always reminded me of a stained glass window. Blue is also my favorite color! |
| 7 Reasons I Hated “Toy Story 3″ … Posted: 03 Apr 2011 09:19 AM PDT Sure, it may have won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, but I didn't like "Toy Story 3," and think "How to Train Your Dragon" ought to have won. While I'm a big fan of Disney – Pixar, and I loved the first two "Toy Story" films, I loathed "Toy Story 3." Why, you ask? I'd be happy to tell you! Here are 7 reasons I hated "Toy Story 3." 1. It was so sad!I know, I know, "Toy Story 3" was supposed to be a little sad, with Andy all grown up and leaving for college. And what Disney movie doesn't make you tear up at least once? So I was expecting it to be a little sad, but I was overwhelmed with how heart-breaking it was… I didn't just have to deal with the "Andy leaving" storyline, but the one with the "abandoned toys," especially the Big Baby, just killed me! I cried through at least a quarter of the movie, which is the biggest reason I hated "Toy Story 3." 2. It was meanThe other two "Toy Story" movies featured bad guys and situations that were somewhat scary, often silly, but rarely mean. "Toy Story 3," however, was very mean-spirited, and that bothered me. There was no wonder, no awe, just a lot of meanness… which I didn't expect, and which made me very disappointed. 3. It was creepyBig Baby? CREEPY! And Ken? Also somewhat creepy. Even Strawberry… creepy! I'm not alone in thinking this, either… my 7-year-old daughter thought they were creepy too… even Sid and his trove of battered toys weren't this scary… |
| 11 Similarities of Men and Women … Posted: 03 Apr 2011 08:33 AM PDT There are so many books and articles that talk about the differences between men and women. The literatures on this topic make it appear like these differences are so profound. They propagate the idea that we cannot live in sync with each other unless we come to understand these differences. The authors focus so much on the differences that they forget about the things that bring us together. In fact, aside from the differences in sexuality, aggression, and motor performance, men and women are alike in so many ways. Here are some similarities of men and women that I have noticed. 1. We are not perfectWe expect one another to be the perfect friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, lover, mother, father, brother, and sister. However, that simply is not possible. As a rather popular quote says, "To err is human, to forgive is divine." And although we are far from being divine, we have the capacity to forgive (or forget). So maybe we should a) stop expecting too much from people, and b) understand and forgive more. 2. Stereotyping hurts usI don't think that I need to list down the different stereotypes of men and women. We are all too familiar with them. When we stereotype ourselves, we put ourselves in boxes. We unconsciously stunt our personal growth and development. Stereotyping hurts men and women alike so it is best that we stop boxing ourselves in. We need to be free to choose who and what we want to be. 3. We need to be loved, appreciated, and acceptedWe are all human beings and we all desire to be loved, appreciated, and accepted by our kin and the other people in our lives. Just because women are given the stereotype of being tender and nurturing doesn't mean that we need to be loved and appreciated more than men. And likewise, men don't need to make excuses for wanting to be loved and appreciated just because they are stereotyped as tough and unemotional. |
| Happy Birthday, Amanda and Leona! Posted: 03 Apr 2011 05:12 AM PDT Today is the birthday of both actress Amanda Bynes and singer Leona Lewis… happy birthday, ladies!
Lewis, whose talents were first discovered on Britain’s “The X Factor,” is 26 today. Her rich, soulful voice and stunning supermodel looks won her the third season, as well as plenty of success after the show, including PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian in 2008 and Top New Artist by Billboard Magazine the same year. Amanda Bynes, who I absolutely adore, is 25 today. We know she can do comedy (remember “She’s the Man”?)… I wonder if she’s interested in doing drama? She’s the ultimate California girl, and I can’t wait to see what she does next… Happy birthday, Amanda and Leona! Here’s to another year marked with success, joy, and (hopefully) lots of juicy singing and acting gigs! |
