| Posted: 15 Apr 2011 11:23 AM PDT Don't know about you but my house is full of gadgets in every room. I've actually become very energy conscious and cost is only one of the reasons. I used to have televisions on upstairs and downstairs at the same time, leave lights on and not give a thought to energy I might be losing due to insufficient roof insulation etc. Things are different now and I'm probably an energy conservation bore. Whenever I visit my sister and mother I make a point of nagging about anything I notice and here are 7 ways to greener gadgetry that I constantly harp on about. 1. Excess chargingDon't leave your cell phone or MP3 player on charge overnight or all day. They can't be charged beyond the battery limit so by leaving them plugged in after being fully charged is just a pure waste of energy. 2. StandbyWhere practical there's actually no need to keep things on standby. Microprocessors are so competent that they remember all the settings of your particular gadget so you can turn things off completely. For example, turn off the satellite receiver at the mains when you go to bed and then turn it on when you want TV after work the next day. 3. Battery powerBattery operated items are a prime way to greener gadgetry. Our remote controls, flashlights, kids toys, etc. all require batteries. Switch to rechargeable ones. There's the initial outlay to buy charger and rechargeable batteries but it works out a lot cheaper in the long run. Don't throw old batteries away – recycle them. Batteries can be harmful to the environment because they contain heavy metals which are contaminants that cause pollution in the air and in water sources when combusted or they leak in landfill sites. |

| 12 of the Dumbest Warning Labels Ever … Posted: 15 Apr 2011 10:48 AM PDT One of my favorite pastimes involves keeping an eye out for stupid warning labels. There is a surprising amount of them out there, because manufacturers seem to think that people cannot do or understand anything on their own. It’s kind of like that old joke about concentrated orange juice. Anyway, on my quest, I found a lot of them, so here are a dozen of the dumbest warning labels ever. 1. “May cause drowsiness.”This gem is often seen on boxes belonging to sleeping pills. I don’t know about you, but when I have to take a sleeping pill, my general hope is that it will make me drowsy. If it doesn’t, I’m going to be pretty ticked off. But then again, I guess some people out there need to be told that they should not take this kind of medication when they’re going to be doing anything that requires them to function. 2. “Do not hold the wrong end of a chainsaw.”Really? Really? Granted, I am from West Virginia, and I have seen chainsaw mishaps before. However, that was okay when I was five and the people involved had been tipping moonshine pretty much all day. Still, I suppose that there are some people who still need this kind of warning so they can keep all of their fingers intact. 3. “Never used a lit match or open flame to check fuel level.”Again, I myself would think this would be pretty self evident but I guess not. Then again, I’m pretty protective of my eyebrows, so maybe it’s just me. I don’t think so though … I mean, I’m pretty sure this is just that kind of thing that’s ingrained in us from birth. What do you think? |
| Posted: 15 Apr 2011 10:44 AM PDT It still amazes people when I tell them it rains more in Spain than it does in the UK. In fact, during the last week it has rained so heavily that on some days it has been impossible to go out (without getting soaked, anyway). And Spain is hardly alone when it comes to rainfall. So here are some pleasures to enjoy when you're stuck indoors on a rainy afternoon. 1. SexYes, if you're stuck indoors with your other half, then why not close the curtains and make the most of the opportunity. This does not of course apply if you have kids, unless you can distract them with TV. For the child-free, enjoy a, erm, siesta. 2. MoviesAs with when you are sick, rainy days are an ideal opportunity to spend some time watching movies and trashy TV. So instead of thinking that you ought to be going out and doing something more active and cultural, channel-hop until you find something undemandingly entertaining, or put on a DVD. 3. GossipingDo you have friends you haven't spoken to in a while? Take the chance to catch up with them (if they're not enjoying better weather) and have a good gossip. Chatting via webcam is especially good if you live a distance apart and don't have the opportunity to see each other much. |
| 8 Amazing Facts About Earthquakes … Posted: 15 Apr 2011 10:08 AM PDT There is no doubt that the recent earthquake in Japan followed by the devastating tsunami has put the global limelight on the phenomenon of earthquakes once again. If you were looking for some interesting earthquake facts, you have come to the right place. Here is a list of 8 amazing facts about earthquakes. 1. Largest recorded earthquakesThe largest recorded earthquake in the United States occurred on Good Friday, March 28, 1964 in Alaska. It was a magnitude 9.2 earthquake. The largest recorded earthquake in the world was a magnitude 9.5 that occurred on May 22, 1960 in Chile. 2. World's deadliest earthquakeThe world's deadliest earthquake occurred in 1556 in Central China. At that time, people lived in caved that were built from soft rock. All the caves in this region collapsed at over 830,000 people were killed. The second deadliest earthquake also occurred in China, this time in Tangshan region, where it killed 250,000 people in 1976. 3. Free oscillation of the earthHere's another amazing fact about earthquakes. During the worst earthquake the world has seen- the 1960 earthquake in Chile- seismic waves travelled all around the world and shook the world for several days. This phenomenon is known as the free oscillation of the earth and has been recorded only once so far. |
| Posted: 15 Apr 2011 10:06 AM PDT I absolutely adore maxi skirts, and they're definitely hot right now. Generally defined as a skirt that covers all or most of your legs, a maxi skirt is usually ankle length or calf length, and at least falls below the knees. They're the perfect thing to wear if you feel like wearing a skirt, but still want to keep it casual, although there are also some dynamite dressy maxis out there. There are, in fact, tons of versatile and gorgeous maxi skirts, and I've found some of them here! 1. Practice Your Lines Skirt
 2. Tie-Dye Jersey Maxi Skirt
 3. Chasing Clouds Skirt

| Posted: 15 Apr 2011 09:52 AM PDT Summer is slowly rolling around in the Northern Hemisphere ladies, and that means holidays and time on the beach. To make sure you're all absolutely prepared for a season in the sun, I've put together this list of 8 steps to beach beauty. Read and enjoy, ladies: Summer is almost with you! 1. Supple Up
Smooth, soft skin is an absolute necessity to looking glam on the beach. In a bikini, your body is utterly on display so before you get down to the shore, you need to invest in a good all-over exfoliant. Used regularly over a couple of weeks, this kind of product will ensure your skin is even and fresh, and ready for the beach. 2. Get Bronzed
It's a good idea to get a little colour on your skin before you undress at the beach. There are a million effective self-tanning options out there ladies. If you're worried about streaking and the patchy orange effect, fork out and get a professional to take care of your skin colour. 3. Moisturise
Remember that in the sun, your skin dries out very quickly, even if you're wearing a high factor sun block. Keep an intense body cream in your beach bag so you'll be able to sort out any ashy patches or sun irritation that might suddenly attack. |

| Posted: 15 Apr 2011 08:39 AM PDT I have a difficult time finding an animal that I don’t think is cute. I would bring home every stray critter I found, if I feasibly could! I’ve thought about all the animals I’ve seen in my lifetime, whether here in the woods or at a zoo and have come up with a short list below. Here are 8 cute wild animals that I have seen before. Surely you find at least a couple of these animals cute as well! 8. Raccoons
Even adult raccoons are such animated creatures. Their tiny articulate fingers grasp items with such ease. A baby raccoon used to come to my house when my son was very small. We would feed her marshmallows whenever she’d come to the back door. She was so sweet and gentle. It was great to watch her clutch a giant marshmallow with both hands and munch away. 7. Meerkats
These curious creatures seem like a combination of an overly large prairie dog and a wild cat. I was thrilled when a show was dedicated entirely to them. It was like watching a soap opera about meerkats. I think it was on the Discovery Channel, but it could have been Animal Planet instead. 6. Marmosets
I adore monkeys and these are some of the smallest ones around. I saw a couple in a zoo nursery once and they were each clutching a finger of one of the zoo workers. They weren’t merely clutching his finger tip, but each one had its entire body wrapped around a single finger. They were adorable! |
